To think this is still a issue in 2012 Confused my mil was very opssed to me and my oh who is white we had many issue to do with this i just think its very sad.

And i do feel that many people would like their son or daugter to marry /date somone of the same race

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2184351/Parents-jailed-beating-daughter-17-having-black-boyfriend.html

But the good thing is the daughetr did not hold these vile views dispite her parents best efforts

My youngest stepbrothers girlfriends dad cut her off (kind of retracted on it) because my stepbrother is mixed race. We were all utterly stunned by it.

But then someone was once making racist comments around my mum and she said she found it offensive. They rolled their eyes until she pointed out her partner was Indian. They then looked utterly surprised and said she didn't seem the type Hmm

I really didn't believe the stuff I now witness prior to having a mixed race family Sad

TroublesomeEx · 06/08/2012 16:32

It wouldn't bother me.

The possibility for cultural conflict in child rearing would be a concern for me. But that's all.

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 18:54

WaitingForMe this sadly happens alot i not saying many white people think black people are making it up but i think many white people dont fully understand until they are in a mixed family themsleves

My bestie os white and bacuse she is so open i think she thought i was being a bit ott until she came to my wedding and meet my mil

FolkGirl you can have that even if you marry somone from a diffrent class

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 18:58

SoupDragon i would not assume that living in london with 1 in 4 chikdren living in a mixed family or being mixed themslevs here i would be more shocked if he came hime with someone of the same race than assume that he would

Mohammed Ali did an interview with Michael Parkinson, which said each should stick to their own and he didnt want his children inter-racially marrying.

Not just a "White" thing.

Having worked all over the world with many races, religions and cultures, there
is IMHO one set of people who are truly "ist", I cant call it racist but marrying out of your caste? Back to work, the amount of conversations I've had to facilitate - in London - with Indian women and gentlemen who refuse to talk to each other because of caste. Oh, no, the West Africans refused to talk to West Indians. Even in the height of the IRA, the Irish got along fine, as did the Greeks and Turks in he midst of civil war, as did Basques and Catalonians. All bloody purile IMHO

SoupDragon · 06/08/2012 19:19

"SoupDragon i would not assume that living in london with 1 in 4 chikdren living in a mixed family or being mixed themselves "

It's not to do with statistics, it's to do with making initial assumptions. Obviously it would depend on the names to why my initial assumption would be. Anyway, as I said, it would make no difference to me.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 19:25

It wouldn't bother me, even if they were purple!

Their religion would be more of a concern.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 19:26

I don't think there's anything wrong with a group of one coloured people wanting to stick to that colour though.

fgs it's not straight it's hetrosexual.

Well if you're going to be so nit-picky about what words people should use, shouldn't you spell heterosexual correctly?

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 19:57

And not really gost ship i no plenty of people who say things like i think that black men are very sexy but i would never take one home [shocked]

I my self when i was on the dating circut would have white men wanting to sleep with me simply to "see what it was like" to be with a black women i called them tourists or just so they could tell their mates they been with a blck women but would never ever have me as anything more

That is rasict if you white and onlt fancy white men then what can you do, but if you find black men attarctive and your white but wouldnt date a blck guy because you think their all ganstas and theives that is rasict

I didn't mean it like that as in 'coloured people' I meant 'one coloured' as in one white group. Or one pink group. Or one purple group.

I was not calling black people coloured. Read what I have put before insinuating.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 20:13

And what do you mean 'not really'.'not really' what? Confused

Tinsie · 06/08/2012 20:19

Because I think life's easier if you marry "one of your own" i.e. same race, similar background etc.

I don't have any other objections apart from that, I don't think it's a disgrace and I certainly wouldn't feel ashamed.

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 20:21

It depends why you want to "stick to your owan" so to speak if someone say finds blond hair and blue eyes attractive then fair dues you only find that in white people and now and again in some mixed people but if yu didnt want to go out with somone from a diffrent race because of some pre concived nontionthat its not really fair enough

For instance if you meet somone who totally got you and that you found attractive but the only reason you wouldnt date them is becaue of their colour then thats not really ok

I tend to go for a certain type body wise (stockey) and i like a rugged look kind of builder tpyes the only race i have found this dosent lend its self so far is orentail guys but if i found one i would have no issues with dating them

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 20:22

I remember a mini programme (one of those that fills between programmes) on channel 4 about white parents adopting a black child and how the child found it hard because they were confused about their culture.

I always thought that I'd be happy to be adopted by any skin colour as long as they loved me.

Same goes for dating and such.

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 20:25

Tinsie but dot you agree its more about background than race

It would be much easier for a white middle class women from london to marry a middle class black man from london than it would be for a white middle class women from london to marry a working class white man from russia the two white people in this sernro are likey to have two compltey diffrent background the only thing thay most likey would have in common is their colour surley

Just a pet hate of mine.

Krumbum · 06/08/2012 20:26

2 of my friends say directly they wouldn't date anyone who isnt white. They say 'I just personally don't find them attractive' and can't see how that is racist. It assumes that all people from a certain race all look the same!

Mrbojangles1 · 06/08/2012 20:26

GhostShip thats a whole di ffrent issue adoped children come with a whole lot of baggage from their past

OP posts:
Tinsie · 06/08/2012 20:26

Yes, Mrbojangles1, I agree.

Tinsie · 06/08/2012 20:28

Krumbum, it's an assumption, not necessarily racist. The proof of the pudding would be if they met one that they were attracted to, would they date them or not?

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 20:28

mrbojangles I just used it to express how I don't think skin colour is an issue to me. I know it's different, well aware of that. I also wanted to express how there can be other issues aside from the racist factor ie people wanting to have cultural matches.

GhostShip · 06/08/2012 20:31

In thought, the only black man I've ever fancied is Will Smith. And I've yet to find an Asian I've been attracted to.

Krumbum maybe it's something deeply ingrained in us to be attracted to our own skin colour? Like genetically? Or maybe not. Just wanted to add something to the discussion that doesn't judge those who don't fancy people of different skin colours.
