Would be so much better as a musical ambassador for the UK than Cliff bloody Richards or (even worse) Paul sodding McCartney?

Bloody love him & can't imagine anyone not feeling the same! He is brilliant, prolific, still cool, fabulous voice which doesn't seem to be aging in the unfortunate Paul sodding McCartney's has he was always shite anyway

Just my thoughts! Grin

Think George Michael is meant to be playing at closing

Lovecat · 06/08/2012 16:32

YABVU. He is AWFUL. AWFUL. AWFUL

He wrote Walk of Life fer chrissake [vom emoticon], why are we even having this convo?

(I am not a Macca fan, but jeffin' heck, there has to be a better alternative than Knopfler!)

Lovecat · 06/08/2012 16:32

Nancy66, I think I love you :o

squoosh · 06/08/2012 16:34

What is the obsession with all these boring groups and musicians at the Olympics?

Duran Duran. They were there weren't they? It wasn't a horrific hallucination.

Must be a peek into Seb Coe's record collection. When will Black Lace be playing?

Nancy66 · 06/08/2012 16:36

I love you too Lovecat.

I mean... Mark Knofler. Jesus.

I'd sooner have Black Lace

ThePigOnTheWall · 06/08/2012 16:38

I have to agree with you that McCartney is embarrassing now but to say he's "always been shite" might be taking it a bit far.

Like it or not, he was a principle member of the most famous and successful band of all time. He is known world wide although I do not wish to see him every time I turn on the TV

Lovecat · 06/08/2012 16:38

I would much rather have Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine doing The Only Living Boy In New Cross. Now there's a singalong... :o

And I like Duran Duran (but will be the first to admit that live they can be a little... patchy Blush)

ThePigOnTheWall · 06/08/2012 16:39

I'm voting for Bryan Ferry

squoosh · 06/08/2012 16:40

Lovecat haven't even thought of that song in years but am now singing along.

Wonder what JimBob and FruitBat(?) are up to now.

squoosh · 06/08/2012 16:40

I vote for Cradle of Filth.

Love their sea shanties.

ViviPru · 06/08/2012 16:45

I am 33. In all my 33 years until this very day I thought he was American. You have taught me something, OP.

drjohnsonscat · 06/08/2012 17:04

Actually I'm going to horrify you all and say it should have been Rod. Amazing voice, amazing songs.

Check out the Killing of Georgie for the voice Grin

Great performer too - which is why Macca is ok. Still can perform and work a crowd. The trouble with lots of younger performers is that they don't know how to work a crowd in the same way or are too full of themselves to give it what it needs.

Van is the best British singer ever but a miserable old git so no good for any of these purposes.

Dawndonna · 06/08/2012 17:05

Rod has only ever done three good songs.
Maggie,
Killing of Sister Georgie and Mandolin Wind.
Sorry.

travailtotravel · 06/08/2012 19:08

Another vote for local hero to end the games. SOOO appropriate!

lisianthus · 06/08/2012 20:24

Hell yes and YANBU etc etc. he's one of the greatest guitarists EVER. Technically brilliant.

What on earth is wrong with "Romeo and Juliet"? The music is great and the lyrics are really clever.

Was rather disappointed with Macca at the opening ceremony. It was a bit of a come-down after the rest of it. Surely they can't be considering getting Cliff in.

mummydig · 06/08/2012 20:43

Bring on Knopfler! Cant stand McCartney....

drjohnsonscat · 06/08/2012 23:07

Think Romeo and Juliet is a great song and v underrated.

AngryFeet · 06/08/2012 23:19

How very dare you! Romeo and Juliet was our first dance at our wedding and i bloody love it. Even if it is about a prossie allegedly.

out2lunch · 06/08/2012 23:23

ugh no i agree with nancy

and someone please tell my dm the k in his name is silent

BettyTurnip · 06/08/2012 23:36

Van is N. Irish.

I take exception to whoever said Rod has only had three good songs. I would have paid thousands to see him close the opening ceremony in his leopard print leggings singing Do You Think I'm Sexy with an inflating arse a la Kenny Everett.

drjohnsonscat · 07/08/2012 00:14

I guess that makes him the best UK singer then??

And Rod only had three songs????. He is genius. First Cut is the Deepest, Stay With Me, You Wear It Well. Love em!

Noqontrol · 07/08/2012 00:38

Yes. Totally agree with you op. Mark Knopfler is my hero.

Yama · 07/08/2012 23:00

Can I just say that my earlier suggestion of 'Brothers in Arms' seems even more apt now with the Triathlon result today?

SuperElf · 07/08/2012 23:10

Another vote for Local Hero to end the games. In fact if they don't play this I might mute the sound anyway and play it over the top.
