Does anyone DC's do a morning paper round?

My 14 year old son has been doing a morning paper round for the past week. He came home this morning with his wages - £20. He has to be at the shop for 6am Monday to Saturday and 7am on a Sunday.

He marks up his own papers and on a weekday gets home about 7.15am. He is quite happy to do it but says the pay is crap. It does seem crap - not even £3 per day. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the 'going' rate is because if he needs to ask for more money I would like some idea of the average pay. Thanks

One of mine does a weekend round, doesn't mark up the papers. It's £3 for one day and £3.50 for the other day. I forget which is which, but one day is a slightly heavier load.

My ds1 recently asked about a paper round and that sounds about right actually. Think it was 3 pounf for a weekday and 5 for each day at the wkend. So all 7 days wd get u twenty to twentyfuve. Grr typos, posting from new phone! Cant finf my pound symbol either!!

my son does 7 days morning round, needs to be at the shop 7.00 am in the week 7.30 at weekends, does not mark up papers that is done for him. he gets £25 pw,which seems ok. I may be wrong but i'm sure that at their age they should not legally be working before 7.00am.

I used to get £15 a week for my paper rounds (I did 2!) and that was oh erm 12ish years ago.

All three DC have done one. DS2's shop has just merged a few rounds and made some paperboys/girls redundant. He used to get £16.00 for a 7-day week and now gets £19.00 for more work.

Is it your DS's choice to get to the shop so early int he week? That's illegal. U-16s can only start work at 7 am. My DS gets there earlier (unlike the other two DC!) as he's very conscientious about being punctual and likes to take his time to get ready for school.

Happyscouse - £25! Wow! How many papers, if you don't mind my asking? DS does 30-35 per day now.

My DD did the free papers. Just once a week. They were delivered to us at lunchtime on a Wednesday and they had to be delivered any time between then and Thursday at 7 pm. She got between £9 and £14 depending on if there were any leaflets in there or not. I would fold them and put the leaflets in and she would deliver them. Took me about an hoursat in front of TV and took her about and hour and a half. Much better than a daily round.

IloveJudgeJudy · 05/08/2012 13:19

Gosh, Mamma. Mine did the free papers before they went bust and only got about £5.00 per week and then pence more, depending on the leaflets.

happyscouse · 05/08/2012 14:23

Ilove, he has25-30 depending on the day (and his dad helps him with the heavys at the weekend) will tell him he's the John Paul Getty of the paperboy world!

lilygoodtime · 05/08/2012 21:11

My ds 14 does a morning round between 25-30 per day 6 days a week and gets £20. It takes him 35-40 mins to do the round and the papers are ready when he gets there at 7 am.

Viviennemary · 05/08/2012 21:22

I agree that those weekly rounds seem to be a bit better paid. And then there's sometimes a bit of extra money when there are leaflets. It doesn't seem very much in view of the getting up early and taking an hour a day.

DrCoconut · 06/08/2012 00:36

I did a weekly round and the pay was awful for how long it took if there were lots of leaflets. About £20 for a full day lugging a huge trolley round in all weathers. If there were fewer leaflets and I could fit all 250 papers in at once I could just do it and it took about 3 hours but if they were thick I had to keep going home to restock which took time. And the blasted things took ages to prep as well and filled the house when they came. I was really really skint though and needed every penny I could earn. The downside of no leaflets was only about £7 pay. This was about 6 - 7 years ago.
