At what point would it be reasonable to call the police?

We live in a quiet cul de sac, mostly retired people and families with young children. Newish neighbours are having extremely loud party in their garage & front garden, spilling over on to the street. Lots of very loud people wandering around on the roads, drinking, smoking, sitting on other people's walls etc. The noise is considerable even with our windows all closed (we are opposite). No music, mostly people shouting, screaming and occasionally fighting. I would estimate around 30-40 people roughly, maybe more. They sound a bit like a crowd of football hooligans. Hmm

DH hates any kind of noise at night, and is furious. DD's room faces on to the street and she can't get back to sleep. I thought it was dying down earlier, but it's getting worse again. DH wants to call the police now, but I thought that was a bit heavy handed. Now I'm beginning to wonder.

Until what time do you think we should tolerate this? Oh, and please don't tell me to go over and ask them to shut up, as they look really intimidating. They did see me closing the upstairs windows, and seemed to find it highly amusing...

I would have called them an hour ago.

SkipTheLightFanjango · 05/08/2012 00:27

Gone midnight..call them.

StripyShoes · 05/08/2012 00:27

I would call now, tbh.

Olympia2012 · 05/08/2012 00:28

Well you don't live in a 'quiet cul de sac' anymore!!

Maybe they are celebrating 3 gold medals from the Olympics? Give 101 a call now before the night shift changes...

londone17 · 05/08/2012 00:28

Please call them. My neighbours have been doing this most of the time for six years so I sympathise.

Jinsei · 05/08/2012 00:32

Oh really? I thought the police might laugh if we called them before midnight. Blush But it's now 12.30 and they're still very noisy. Is 101 some sort of non-emergency number?

After 11 is unsociallable hours

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2012 00:34

I'm torn on this really

If you're used to living in a "quiet cul de sac, mostly retired people and families with young children", then you'll probably have forgotten what it's like to live near other people who don't fit that description.

Being loud and occasionally fighting, I would have a problem with but not the drinking/smoking/sitting on walls etc...

So if you do ring the police and ask them to ask the party goers to keep it down, I'd avoid mentioning anything other than the fighting and the loudness.

It's Saturday night....is it a one off?

I'd probably leave them to it til about 2am if it's a one off but that's just me...I'm a bit more live and let live than some people I know.

FrancesHouseman · 05/08/2012 00:34

Yes, call 101.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 00:38

I think call, it's really late.

If they ask you about it, get them another time to let you know so you at least have warning.

I live in student mecca and I would still get arsey about parties going on well after midnight. They need to know other people live here too and we're not all students. They should at least be getting inside, not out in the garden and all in the middle of the cul-de-sac, at this time of night, that will make it much louder than if they were inside.

greenbananas · 05/08/2012 00:44

Call the police - this is antisocial behaviour. The police will most likely want to prevent any more serious trouble from kicking off, and they might just swing by to 'check that everything is okay'.

Jinsei · 05/08/2012 00:46

DH just went out to shout at some girl who came to throw up on our drive. Shock He spoke to one of the guys and asked them to quieten down. If they don't shut up in a few minutes, we will call police.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 00:48

Oh, that's horrible.

Do call ... it's ten to one, they're all outside, if they quieten down now and stop they'll only do it again.

Moominsarescary · 05/08/2012 00:50

We had this not long after we moved. I thought bloody hell is this going to be a weekly thing. Luckily 2 years later that was the only time.

AgentZigzag · 05/08/2012 00:50

That sounds reasonable to me.

Bleargh at her chucking up on your drive, she'll be back in the morning to sluice it down no doubt? Hmm

Jinsei · 05/08/2012 00:53

OK, have called 101, will wait & see if they turn up.

OP posts:
LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/08/2012 00:54

Good luck!

AgentZigzag · 05/08/2012 00:55

Lights off and twitch those curtains Jinsai Grin

And then report back Grin

Jinsei · 05/08/2012 00:58

Don't care if they know who has called them, just hope that the police come soon!

OP posts:
LadySybildeChocolate · 05/08/2012 00:59

Get them to clean your drive in the morning. Sad

LordOfThe5Rings · 05/08/2012 01:06

Any sign of police OP? Or quieting down?

Jinsei · 05/08/2012 01:15

Police came around 5 minutes ago. Still lots of noise but they are starting to disperse now. DH has just seen a small child wandering around in the garage. :(

OP posts:
LordOfThe5Rings · 05/08/2012 01:16

Shock least they know you are taking it seriously.

Krumbum · 05/08/2012 02:02

The law says after 11
