To think when they say "Inspire a Generation", they didnt have people in their thirties in mind.

I am officially inspired.
I want to win a medal.
Am 35, so have eliminated all but shooting. Am off to buy a gun.

I nearly joined my local archery club last year after having a go at in on holiday - I was pretty good! Would've cost about £300 just to set myself up though.

What I'd really like to see is more adults sports clubs that are just for fun where nobody will laugh at you for being shit at it. When I look at local clubs they are all established teams and I'd never have the guts to do that. I just want a laugh playing netball or whatever, so much more fun than the gym.

Pineapple my four year old DD watched the 10m synchronised diving and said, dismissively, "I can do that" and spent the next hour jumping off the footstool.

rogersmellyonthetelly · 03/08/2012 08:40

I've been inspired this week, been riding my horse, only to be disappointed when I'm still crap, and I can still only get extended trot in my dreams..... I'm a fair shot though so maybe shooting is more my thing?

RindersGoesForGold · 03/08/2012 08:40

Darts is a game, not a sport!

I haven't been on a horse for at least 5 years, and much as I loved riding, even when I had my own horses Olympic eventing was never going to be a realistic ambition! So it's shooting for me too. Roll on Rio 2016...Torch

The female rower joined Steve Redgrave's initiative for tall people to become Olympians. She was very sporty, but had never rowed until four years ago.

Sadly, I'm only 5'2 - and a little older! Grin

rainydaysarebad · 03/08/2012 08:49

Every 4 years I get inspired to become a gymnast. I think people would become hypnotised by my jelly belly if I ever started prancing around on the gym floor. I could trick them into giving us gold!

ILiveInAPineapple · 03/08/2012 08:50

Carrie Grin my DS wanted me to take him swimming immediately so he could practise! His swimming teacher is going to be delighted on Saturday Wink

FasterHigherBeardierDaddyman · 03/08/2012 08:54

Dd(3) has taken up weightlifting with a long cardboard tube stuffed with play food Grin

I on the other hand am 30, fat and broken so I think I'm ruled out of most events... :(

NicholasTeakozy · 03/08/2012 09:04

If procrastination was an Olympic event then I'd definitely get a medal. If I got around to entering for it...

Flyingwithoutwings · 03/08/2012 09:22

It's inspiring me. I'm doing 4 classes at the gym this week and I'm the laziest person I know but I'm thinking "walking race", yeah, walking, I can walk, I can do that... Wink

wanderingalbatross · 03/08/2012 09:28

Or equestrian... here and here

Scatterplot · 03/08/2012 09:30

Golf will be an Olympic sport at Rio 2016: see Rio Golf site - another possibility?

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 03/08/2012 09:40

I am 6 feet so maybe rowing a possibility.....
Don't fancy judo..all that pulling and adjusting of robe.

I wold like to point out that I ran a relay at the Olympic Stadium in April, so feel I have achieved before Usain Smile

AKMD · 03/08/2012 09:51

YANBU, the gym is packed this week Angry Go away!

I watched the gymnastics with my 2yo and my living room is now a mini version of the Excel arena. Coffee table = vault. Sofa = sprung floor. Window ledge = beam. No uneven bars yet but it's only a matter of time.

Tiggles · 03/08/2012 10:37

Archery is a fab sport - although I used to do field archery rather than target archery. Walk through the woods, bit like golf, but loosing arrows to targets up and down hills, or varying in distance from a few feet to 80 yards. Be inspired and go and do some!
Now have to do fencing which is also good fun, as couldn't find a babysitter for 5day competitions for 3 children, I wonder why Grin.

geegee888 · 03/08/2012 11:14

A lot of sports have plenty of age group competition. In triathlon, you can try for selection for World and European age group teams in 5 year bands for each age group. You would be in 35-39 OP, which is an advantage, as its better to be at the younger end of your age group. Road running is full of people 40 or 45 plus winning races, and track running has Masters athletics. Swimming has a very active masters scene. Most endurance sports have plenty of over 40 and over 50 competitors with their own prize categories.

AlwaysHoldingOnToStars · 03/08/2012 11:26

Ds5 said to me "will you watch me diving in the Olympics?" he is also going to be a number 1 swimmer and rower apparently. I guess I should start on those lessons now!

I'd love to try stuff, but like someone else said, for fun rather than competitively. I quite like the look of Triathlon, but need to learn to swim properly and be able to run!

I did try Archery recently. It was fun, but I was crap and twanged my boob - that hurts!!

Latara · 03/08/2012 12:50

I'm thinking of Cage Fighting. Unsure if it's an olympic sport but good for PMT i'm sure Grin

fuzzpig · 03/08/2012 13:31

DS (2) is spending his days stark naked ATM due to potty training. Given his propensity towards flinging himself on unsuspecting family members, I'm thinking Greco-Roman wrestling may be the way to go Hmm :o
