You know, the instant mashed potato?

mr mash. far far superior to Smash.

MarygoeZforgold · 03/08/2012 00:20

The other way to use Smash is as topping for shepherd's pie, salmon pie etc - by the time you have put it on top of the pie, put a few knobs of butter on it and baked it in the oven it has a lovely crusty top and is yummy.

CouldItBeTrue · 03/08/2012 00:22

Maryz that sounds divine!!

BagofHolly · 03/08/2012 00:26

Mix it with corned beef, fry it up till its a bit crispy and burned and serve with brown sorce. A cure for all ills including monster hangovers.

CouldItBeTrue · 03/08/2012 00:29

BagofHolly - this is like food porn!!

WHY DON'T I HAVE ANY CORNED BEEF IN???

YaBuy lazy

My salmon pie is pretty sophisticated too.

Open a tin of (cheapest) Tesco salmon. Crush and spread on bottom of pie dish.

(If feeling sophisticated or having guests, add a layer of sliced tomatoes, some sliced mushrooms and a shake of mixed herbs. If it's only for the kids don't bother)

Make up a packet of Smash using 3/4 water, 1/4 milk. Spread on top of salmon.

(If feeling sophisticated or having guests make pretty patterns in Smash with fork. If not, don't bother)

Add a few knobs of butter.

Shove in oven at gas 4 for about 20 minutes, or a bit more if you have odd kids who like burnt Smash.

Serve with Heinz tomato ketchup salad or frozen peas.

CouldItBeTrue · 03/08/2012 00:37

I have to go, I'm going to be on a mad fridge/cupboard raid at this rate Grin

I like quick and easy.

These ideas will bode well when morning sickness kicks in and I can't bear to be near food but DC1 needs feeding (selfish little swine) Wink

Shullbit · 03/08/2012 00:41

I have been known to refuse to eat Smash and the likes. I can't stand the stuff.

I have even converted my mother after her living off the stuff.

You can't beat proper mash, with loads of butter. Mmmm...

BlueSuedeStiletto · 03/08/2012 00:43

Oh I loved smash as a child. My nan used to make it with lots of butter and sometimes grated cheese. It's lovely with baked beans and fish fingers.

I'm going to have to get some after work. Or better still pop into my nan's and casually mention that I'm hungry. Grin

lovebunny · 03/08/2012 06:40

smash is horrible. mother in law used it in the vile fish pie that made me vomit in 1977.
i heard it makes a good thickener in soups.

needsomesunshine · 03/08/2012 06:48

Mr. Mash is better then smash. (no added salt). My ds's love it better with half milk, butter & cheese.

Sharksandfishes · 03/08/2012 06:48

I used to have a boyfriend who raved about his mum's roast dinners. I soon discovered her "roast" was beef braised in Oxo, Smash, Aunt Bessie's roasties and Yorkshire puds and tinned peas and carrots!!
I love Smash though! Go for it! Grin

catinboots · 03/08/2012 07:12

Yum yum bubblegum.

Smash with a ton of butter, greated cheese and black pepper.

Fried egg and spaghetti hoops on top. Ketchup.

The student dinner of kings.

Worra, there is no stress in peeling and boiling potatoes and I have NEVER bought Smash til now - I just wondered if there were any people Out There that liked it.

I definitely need a few quick meal type foods in my home for childminding. Sometimes, like yesterday, when all the children are out scooting to their hearts content and time is running short for making tea, and they had pasta the day before, and the kids are S T A R V I N G then surely Smash is not the devil's food? (Sandwiches for lunch so that out was out of the question).

Yesterday was chicken nuggets and chips...

By they way, what the fuck is the difference between a goujon and a nugget / finger??

Great ideas from some other posters! Thanks. I especially love the salmon pie with the posh variation thereof Grin.

YANBU to try smash yourself.

YABU to feed it to your mindees though!!!!

Morloth · 03/08/2012 08:38

Back in my uni days I considered a packet of Deb (Aussie equivalent of Smash) a complete meal.

Didn't even need a bowl and you can make it with hot water from the tap.

Open packet, put hot water in, stir in packet and eat.

Total washing up, one spoon.

Happy days.

CaveyInTheMaillotJaune · 03/08/2012 08:40

Smash is a bit blah. The best one is the Lidl nutmeg mash in a red box - Harvest or something like that is the brand. That one is bloody lovely, as is Aunt Bessie's frozen mash. I hate mashing spuds.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 03/08/2012 08:48

I don't mind the mashing, but there are inevitably some lumps. I cannot bring myself to spend £++++ on a potato ricer.

By the way, I went to get the pack of smash from my cupboard to check the ingredients after a PP suggested I WBU to feed my mindees smash, and I cannot find it. Seems I may not have put it in my basket after all. Damn.

DH bought some a couple of years ago, it's vile, all softness and no texture, salty, taste of UHT milk, disgusting. I am not a total puritan when it comes to food preparation but I would never eat Smash again, or give it to anyone else.

confusedpixie · 03/08/2012 08:55

YANBU, do it! smash is my guilty pleasure. Like someone up thread I add bisto gravy granules too. Heavenly!

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 05/08/2012 22:47

I have found a potato ricer for £6 and so have decided to forego the smash.

However, I am now tempted to try Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire puddings. AIBU?

YABU, those yorkies turn out like bricks, my Mum uses them even though I offer to go to the shop, buy the ingredients for yorkies and make them myself. Weirdo.
