Names with strange spellings

I sent a birthday card to the friend of a daughter today then felt bad because I realised that I had addressed her as Sarah Jane instead of Sarah Jayne. I also know of an Allison and a Michele etc.

AIBU to wonder if you think this is an attempt at individuality or just a bit weird?

Oh & lol at the La Luna thing-I hope you're taking the piss & didn't really think it was the sun??????? Shock

TrudiRed · 05/08/2012 10:31

I've spent years correcting the spelling of my name - of which there are 3 'normal' spellings. When naming our children we did take this into account but there are still more than one way to spell both dd's names. DS is George though - not much you can do with that.

FanjoPingpong · 05/08/2012 10:33

La Luna is quite a sweet name. Functions a bit like St John, where you wouldn't say that 'St' is their first name.

I think that spelling doesn't matter too much as you can always change it when you're older, free of charge, and with a unique name you're more likely to get your chosen email address on a popular mail server.

edam · 05/08/2012 11:01

ds's name is the English form of a Welsh name, four letters long, very common surname. Yet people still get it wrong and confuse it with an Irish name that sounds different! I can't think why people get them confused when they have only heard it not seen it written down - they must imagine the letters as they hear it or something and plump for the more common Irish name.

My name is spelled correctly but I'm sure 99% of people think it is wrong. My Mother chose the right spelling for a girl (after one of her bridesmaids). But over the years it has become a name that is only used for girls, yet with the male spelling. It's as if Francis became a girl-only name instead of the male form of Frances.

Also have a surname that can quite legitimately be spelled four different ways (originally Scots Gaelic) so I always have to spell out my email address which is a pain in the bum.

My dd is called Ame Sofie. I love the fact it's a common name but with a unique spelling.

kandyutt · 01/03/2015 07:14

Love he personal touch to he'd name I have. RHYUN its pronounced Ryan and I love it... he has his own little twist to life

CuttedUpPear · 01/03/2015 07:17

I want LaLuna's mother to come back and tell us what she thinks now that she knows her DD is named after the moon, not the sun.

I knew someone who named their dog Luna. Because the dog was pretty crazy and there's a long held tradition between lunacy and the moon.

Unescorted · 01/03/2015 07:18

I have a usual name that people always spell wrong. It was not helpful to marry a bloke with an unusal surname.
I am forever getting phone calls from people telling me I have not responded to their emails. My boss also kept getting told that my email wasn't working - in the end they had to get business cards made for me.

ragged · 01/03/2015 07:21

Oh bloody hell, Zombie Thread by Kandy, again.

BikeRunSki · 01/03/2015 07:22

This thread has made me chuckle.
DD is Amy.
One of the boys in DS's class had a baby sister a while ago also called this. Their mum asked me how we spelt dd's name and I told her. She said that her daughter's name was spelt Aimiee because they had class!

That's why I have never been to tea with the Queen! My DC's names don't have enough extraneous vowels in!

kandyutt · 01/03/2015 07:25

You complain about my names but your on a zombie kick really

Mehitabel6 · 01/03/2015 07:35

Why comment on something from two and a half years ago? I am sure that the person who started it will not be expecting replies.

It's my first time here I'm sorry.

ragged · 01/03/2015 07:42

Please try to avoid so many typos in your posts, Kandy.
It's bad form to revive lots of old threads (Zombies), especially with the exact same message.

kandyutt · 01/03/2015 07:51

I hope it annoys you. That was an accident and your being hateful why?

wowfudge · 01/03/2015 07:56

Wow - hypocritical to call someone hateful yet hope you annoy them!

TheSolitaryWanderer · 01/03/2015 07:59

Why not start a new thread kandy, instead of bumping zombie ones?
Oh, and as a supply teacher, I come across all sorts of amazing names with strange spellings and double-barrells. Sometimes they are from a different culture, sometimes they are a surname used as a first name, sometimes they are the result of a creative or illiterate parent.
It's fine, it's what they are called.

Mehitabel6 · 01/03/2015 09:27

I was a supply teacher too and odd names and spelling are very common - kandyutt seems very insecure with her choices to have to find all these dead threads.

ragged · 01/03/2015 09:38

Kandy; You're really not cut out for MN if you think my posts to you qualify as 'hateful'. Direct Yes, Hateful No.

Tip: On a new forum it's a good idea to lurk for a while & get a feel for the local culture.

And if you find MN too direct, for god's sake don't go near MoneySavingExpert or any forum dominated by Men. They'll eat you alive.

Nethuns, maybe?

HappydaysArehere · 01/03/2015 10:08

I remember a headmaster being told that a new boy's name was "Gooey". Upon asking how the name was spelt he was told it was "Guy"! Ever since I have half suspected various name spellings as mistakes.

anothernumberone · 01/03/2015 10:16

Yes the Conor issue is baffling. Maybe the poster thinks the commonly used Connor is right but that is generally the spelling for the Surname Connor or O'Connor. Siobhan and Chevonne are slightly different pronounciation I would say but I can definitely see why if you likes the name you would not want to burden a non Irish/Gaelic speaker with Siobhan outside Ireland/Scotland or the Isle of Mann

anothernumberone · 01/03/2015 10:18

Gah I missed the zombie thread alert and I read the first 100 posts. That will teach me to rtft.

MrsPeterQuill · 01/03/2015 10:29

I read all the thread and I'm glad I did but was it wrong that I laughed at the La Luna posts? Blush

I really hope that poster comes back to two us she was joking...
