to have been scared away by cows?

I took the dcs out for a picnic in the sunshine today. We went somewhere out in the country, along a nice footpath through a farm, to an allegedly lovely pond and field with lots of space for the kids to play. Half way along this walk that I kept promising the kids would be worth it, we come to a gate leading into a field with cows (bullocks actually I think but I wasn't looking too closely) in it. We went through the gate and the cattle all stood up and looked at us, we walked a bit further along the footpath and they started coming towards us, that was when both dcs and I turned back and ran walked quickly back to the gate. We had our picnic in a not especially pleasant field, it wasn't horrible but it wasn't the idyllic spot we were aiming for.

Dp thinks we were being soft and wimpy, that the cows would have been fine, and laughed hysterically at the thought of us running away from cows. AIBU to have found them really scarey a bit unnerving?

YANBU at ALL

GirlWithALlamaTattoo · 31/07/2012 15:54

YANBU. We had a scary cow experience on holiday last year. Walking through fields, following a not-much-used public footpath on a map, found ourselves in a field full of them. They were curious and wanted to know who we were and why we were in their field. Trouble is, they were very big and had sharp-looking, heavy-looking hooves. We couldn't find the stile to escape, as a bunch of them was (were?) hiding it.

We crossed the field as fast as we could, DP banging stones noisily above his head and shouting, which didn't frighten them very much but just about kept them away long enough for us to find a bit of fence we could climb over!

So now we know who has the brains in your family. Smile

blackteaplease · 31/07/2012 15:56

Bullocks are scary, they get all giddy and skitter round you. They are a hefty weight and could knock you over

YANBU at all, cosw scare the living daylights out of me.

GoodButNoMedals · 31/07/2012 15:57

I'm glad I'm not BU. They came quite fast once they got going and dd2 was terrified (not me at all Wink).

I wonder if dp is amused because he grew up in the country and used to cut through a cow's field on his way to school, whereas I am more of a townie.

If they were bullocks they were just being curious and would have done you no harm but thay would have crowded round you which is quite unerving and especially if you were with children. You were right to walk away.

Cows with calves though can be extremely dangerous and especially if you have a dog with you. Never ever go in a field with cows and calves with a dog. They can attack and chase the dog and trample you in the prcoess.

Cows that have just calved will attack anything to protect the calf. My father, a farmer of many years experience was nearly killed by a cow that had just had its calf.

Never ever go in a field with a bull.

fruitysummer · 31/07/2012 16:04

Cows scare the shit out of me.

I 'hide' myself behind DH and make him take the dog who thankfully is not the slightest bit interested and practically sprint to the wall/gate/stile to get out of the field.

Anyone who has experience of a field of cows running towards them can tell you that YANBU! This has happened to me several times and I'm never sure what would actually happen if I stood my ground - usuall we end up legging it for the gate!

Petsinmyolympicpudenda · 31/07/2012 16:07

Cow are cunts FACT
I got chased by some when walking my dog on holiday a few years back.

I eat alot more beef these days to punish those bovine pricks

GoodButNoMedals · 31/07/2012 16:10

Glad it's not just me then. I did wonder if I was just being precious.

I do think they were bullocks, there definitely weren't any calves and I think I would have noticed a bull.

I shall show dp this thread (and the other one) to show him that I am in fact perfectly normal and not in any way a loon for running away from cows.

I grew up in the country, we didn't cut through the cow fields unless we were on horses, they are way too big and Bullocks get nosy and will push you.
I did cut through a pig field once, I had no idea the farmer had put the big male out with the sow and her piglets. Holy hell that pig was fast and they bite, I ran up the 5 bar gate to get away and the farmers son was killing himself laughing.

Dirtymistress · 31/07/2012 16:26

I am very scared of them having been chased by the bastards twice. I probably could win a gold medal for sprinting in my wellies with 12 of them charging after me. My Dad is very ashamed of me, says I should just stand still and wave my arms at them...Yeah right, that's exactly what instinct tells me to do.

YANBU - a similar thing happened to me and my DCs plus dog couple of days ago on a very well used national footpath (one of those major walking routes that run for miles). The footpath area is very wide, more like a grass road, but its not a field as no fences across it, but someone had allowed herd of cows plus young on to it. We tried to go around them but one big mother took a dislike to our dog (who was cowering behind me) and strted to trot very fast towards us...cue me backing off and then shouting madly at cow to scare it away...must have looked hilarious. DCs were really upset and to cap it all we stood there as other walkers and some very fast cyclists just whizzed through this herd no problem. We had to turn back, scary experience, thought I was ok with cows as well having been brought up in country and often walked across fields of cows

Catinthebox · 31/07/2012 16:35

YANBU.

Cow are constantly trampling people to death.

I was recently bullied by a gang of mad sheep while out for a walk and having once seen one smallish sheep charge at, and ram off his feet a policeman (who was trying to save it from being run over- the stupid thing was marauding by the main road) I was taking no chances.

They should introduce animal ASBO's and rid the countryside of these horrible beasts Wink

lovebunny · 31/07/2012 16:35

moooooooo.....

worried yet?

Cockpark · 31/07/2012 16:36

No, Defo not BU. I had a near death experience on holiday last year. DPs were looking after the DCs so DH and I sneaked off to the pub, he assured me the short cut would be safe..... What a load of bollocks that was.....
We got right up to the top of the field only to be surrounded by a bunch of ambushing bovines trying to stealth attack us. I ran as fast as I could away screaming 'DH JUST FUCKING RUNNNNNNNN' as he ambled calmly down the hill.
Had to take my inhaler and everything. He also had to buy me two pints of cider and some rothmans (country pub.....) to help me calm down.

lovebunny · 31/07/2012 16:40

cows are scary. they do kill people sometimes. but i don't think they plan it.

EasilyBored · 31/07/2012 16:41

I hate cows.

BarredfromhavingStella · 31/07/2012 16:41

No DNBU, cows are scary & fucking BIG

Viviennemary · 31/07/2012 16:44

YANBU. I totally hate going in a field that has cows in it. They can be quite dangerous. I don't even like going in a field with sheep but I'm told that really is being unreasonable and wimpish. Grin at Cockpark!!

Ormiriathomimus · 31/07/2012 16:46

I am not bothered by cows unless dog is with me. And even then I tend to take a deep breath and be brave - but not sure about having a picnic in a field with cows in it. Cow shit all over the place being the main reason....

SirEdmundFrillary · 31/07/2012 16:47

Some cows are gentle and some can get angry if spooked. That's the sum of my expertise right there.
