LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:05

Shouldnt be followed by no thats an awful idea, i refuse to buy that or thats really boring!

Its my birthday soon and various family members including dp, gps and mum and dad have asked what i would like, im mid twenties, I have said amazon vouchers and got told no you will only spend on books. I have said a breadmaker and been told im boring, a hifi for the kitchen so theres no danger of me spilling all over the laptop which is what i currently use and all are apparently no good! I am fresh out of ideas so am apparently getting nothing :P haha.

AIBU to think that i know what i want for my birthday and resent being called boring :)

You need to ask for something completely outrageous "....or amazon vouchers".

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 30/07/2012 20:09

YANBU.

We gave a wedding list out to people who asked what we wanted but then loads of them complained that it was boring and suggested other stuff. It was a wedding list ffs, I thought I was supposed to ask for boring homey type stuff.

JeezyPeeps · 30/07/2012 20:09

They sound like great ideas - its sad that people can't accept that these are the things that would give you pleasure.

YANBU at all.

dwpanxt · 30/07/2012 20:09

YANBU

Just tell them to surprise you - but to make sure they leave the receipts so you can exchange the surprises for something you actually want.

Or give them a list which they must stick to. Include all of your original ideas. Cant see what the problem is though.I love giving people money/vouchers.

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:10

i dread to think :O i hate wasting money as we are skint at the minute so am thinking of things i genuinally want but cant afford :( Glad its not just me that is wondering why they even asked. If i get money id probably save for an ipad but i imagine that would be considered pointless because ive got a laptop. Its been a daily occurence that roughly ends up with them saying i am massively boring!

Passmethecrisps · 30/07/2012 20:11

Eh? What a bizarre attitude. Ask for an S&M style swing set or the vouchers. Let them decide what is better.

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:12

The music system in the kitchen is purely because i keep dropping pasta and other culinary wonders on my laptop while im faffing about :) im suprised ym laptop hasnt given up the ghost already the amount that gets spilt on it

OP posts:
LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:13

That would be hilarious, my nan and g are 74 and would probably go to b and q to ask for the swing set :P

Amazon vouchers so you can get whatever you want free from judgement

patosullivan · 30/07/2012 20:16

YANBU.

Pointless asking someone what they want if you're then going to ignore them.

Itsjustafleshwound · 30/07/2012 20:17

Perhaps they want you to give them some luxuries you want that are beyond your finances at the moment?

I hate giving vouchers - just too practical...

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:20

I cant really think of any luxuries, god maybe i am boring! Most things are beyound my finances at the minute bar the odd twix so id be appreciative!

Frikadellen · 30/07/2012 20:21

i think they are perfectly good presents but if books are boring how about a kindle?

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:24

Ive got a kindle thats why i suggested amazon vouchers, thats when they said oh but you'll spend them on books. I think theyve got a bit of a vendetta against the kindle because your paying and not getting the physical book. They seem outraged by the idea

OP posts:
Stinkyminkymoo · 30/07/2012 20:26

'because you'll spend it on books'?! And what on earth is wrong with reading fgs?

That alone means YANBU but your family are!!! Angry

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 20:34

Ah im so glad im NBU, Due to our current financial situation spending it on kindle books would be a huge luxury cause at the minute im reading all the freebie ones and they are naff

YANBU, not even a tiny little bit.

Mil does this all the time, even to the DCs (in fact especially to the DCs, who have to provide a list at Christmas, which she choses from Hmm). It drives me nuts.

EllenParsons · 30/07/2012 20:41

YANBU

Why bother asking if they don't want to know! Hope they don't get you total rubbish.

skateboarder · 30/07/2012 20:41

Yanbu. Why ask, if you dont want to buy what is asked for! Just buy whatever you want and dont let the receiver get their hopes up!
My mil asks & every year i say an amazon voucher or a boots voucher. Both meaning, i can treat myself to something when i see it. Every year she buys me perfume which i sell to my friend and use the money to buy myself what i really wanted

McHappyPants2012 · 30/07/2012 20:48

yanbu, why ask in the first place.

BanoffeeSplitz · 30/07/2012 20:54

You are being terribly unreasonable, it would be absolutely dreadful if you were to treat yourself to books you wanted, but couldn't afford, on your own birthday. Hmm

Out of curiousity, what kind of presents do your family like getting? Would that give you any clues as to what they want you say back to them?

Not that you should give them the answer they want, of course - it's your birthday & they asked you what you wanted! If they didn't want an honest answer, they shouldn't have asked!

HecateHarshPants · 30/07/2012 20:55

Why not say to them "Why did you ask me if you don't want to get me what I am telling you I would like?"

Rhubarbgarden · 30/07/2012 20:56

YANBU. My MIL does this. Every time I say hand cream or bubble bath, but this is deemed boring, so I get given books I won't have time to read or costume jewellery I'll never wear.

LustingAfterMarkDarcy · 30/07/2012 21:00

They like wine, proper books they can hold in their hand, days out /experience things and knitting... So not really much I would do. Ooh I love bubble bath bet that would be boring too haha.
