to think this was really rude (and childish)?

Went to pool for early morning swim. Pool gets very crowded quickly and I (like most others there) have a favourite lane I try to get if possible. I and a few others were first through the doors at opening time. As usual I had bikini on under clothes, but to take advantage of being unusually early I went straight to the pool, left clothes on lounger nearest the steps into the pool and climbed in. I was down the steps, into the pool and halfway accross the pool to the lane I wanted (on other side from steps) when this other woman comes literally running along the edge of the pool flings all her things on the lounger nearest the far lane and dives into that lane. I am in the adjacent lane by the time she lands, a matter of inches away from her, so I stop and look at her in amazement. She looks back at me. She clearly is planning staying there, so to give her a chance to back out politely I say 'Oh, are you taking this lane then?' and she says (very haughtily, and utterly irrelevantly) 'I've been taking this lane for 15 years' (I've never set eyes on her before, but never mind).

By this time I'm fighting the childish temptation to just swim into the lane anyway and fight her for it, but I manage to maintain moral highground by saying casually 'Oh, I was rather hoping for it too, that's why I was in here so early' (I got here first, hint hint) and swimming off gracefully (Wink Hmm) in the lane next to her.

AIBU to think she is a rude ghastly old trout?* First person in water gets first choice of lane, right?

*Extra points for tactical suggestions for next encounter.

Why did you not just say "15 years? you'll be glad of the change then." and swim off? Grin

Fairenuff · 30/07/2012 16:00

When you said you put your things on a lounger, I thought you were going to say someone moved them and sat on the lounger. If you don't really care, why didn't you leave your clothes in the changing room like you usually do. You obviously were trying to get there first. She beat you to it.

She is BU because she was not a gracious winner and you were BU because you were a poor loser.

BupcakesandCunting · 30/07/2012 16:00

Hang on.

So you use all sorts of wily tricks to bag "your" lane like stuffing yourself into your bikini under your clothes and what not. But now you are complaining that someone was wily-er than you?

My brain aches.

WilsonFrickett · 30/07/2012 16:00

Do you get a lane each?

How big is your pool? Shock

MaisyMooCow · 30/07/2012 16:03

Just dunk the bitch next time she swims past you.

Helltotheno · 30/07/2012 16:03

Nowt wrong with having a fave place... I rarely get mine though Grin

It's dog eat dog in the pool though... survival of the fittest!

ScarletSmellyFeet · 30/07/2012 16:04

I would have told her it is against the rules to run along the pool side. Reported her to the life guard and insisted they throw her out ban her forever and then enjoy a smug early morning swim Grin

You could have swam in the lane along side her really splashy and zig zaggy i the hope to piss her off and swap lanes.

usualsuspect · 30/07/2012 16:05

I'm imagining the next frantic flinging off of clothes and sprint to get the favourite lane next time.

Bongaloo · 30/07/2012 16:08

You sound like the perfect swimming partners.

diddl · 30/07/2012 16:09

No she wasn´t rude-how was she supposed to know that you were swimming to that lane?

Why would you leave clothes on a lounger?

I thought I was precious having a favourite lockerBlush

scarletforya · 30/07/2012 16:12

Ha! She did exactly the same as you except she did it better! Sour grapes OP !!

honeytea · 30/07/2012 16:13

Did you shower before going into the pool or just get undressed and hop in? YABU if you didn't shower.

reluctanttownie · 30/07/2012 16:14

Omg.

Yes, it does get multiple-people-to-a-lane crowded, that's why some people go so early, to avoid the mayhem. That, incidentally, is also the reason for the favourite lane - it's the wall-end, so only one person next to you to bump into.

I always wear bikini under clothes. I live 1 minute away, it's pointless to change at the pool. I don't care that she was 'wily-er' than me, or beat me to the lane per se, I cared that her behavour - I thought - was rude. It's not rude to try to be quick to get a lane, but I think it is rude to dive in virtually on top of someone to beat them to the lane they were clearly heading for first.

Clearly I'm alone in that Confused although will make note for when I visit any other pools Grin

YANBU, She is a ghastly old trout.

Make sure you are there before her everyday from now until the day she dies. When she arrives keep your head down and ignore her. If she still bugs you, tell her you pee'd in the water but that she is welcome to join you if she wants.

LucieMay · 30/07/2012 16:15

Yabu to wear a bikini to the swimming baths. I think I have only ever seen teenage girls do that.

Fairenuff · 30/07/2012 16:16

Why didn't you share the lane with her then? If it gets crowded and you do have share lanes then surely it's best to share the lane you like the most? Confused

JuliaScurr · 30/07/2012 16:20

The bikini comments seem to be from those thinking bikinis are worn for 'display'. Not so. I wear one similar to beach volleyball type.

GoingforGoingforGOLD · 30/07/2012 16:23

Aren't you meant to shower before getting in the pool?

Kayano · 30/07/2012 16:25

I'd say what she did was no different to what you were doing, you should have got in at that lane

reluctanttownie · 30/07/2012 16:26

diddl...fact that I was about two inches away from it and swimming along the top of the pool at right angles to the lanes would probably give it away.... Oh, and the fact that as soon as she saw me she started running!

No need for locker as saves time and less faffing after on way to sauna and shower. Had v little with me. Many swimmers do the same at my pool. Always thought it looked like a good idea and was a good time to try.

Yes I showered.

Any more questions??

Oh, and no, not sour grapes. Don't get the lane more often than I do. Quite happy to be beaten 'fairly', this seemed rude. Clearly not though. I must just be excessively well-mannered Grin Grin

LRDtheFeministDragon · 30/07/2012 16:28

'Beaten fairly'?

It's not a competition. It's a swimming pool. Do for goodness' sake sign up for some kind of aggressively competitive water-based activity instead of getting your kicks of made-up games with random strangers.

You're not three, are you?

If you're three, it's all ok and you're forgiven.

honeytea · 30/07/2012 16:31

But you are supposed to wash the bits under the bikini as they are the dirty bits, no point in putting the biki on and then taking it of to wash?

JennerOSity · 30/07/2012 16:32

She was certainly a little excessive in her mission, it just isn't British to be so transparent in your sprint to the front of the Q! I personally like the 'mine for the next 15 years' suggestion and think that should win the points you offered. Grin

pigletmania · 30/07/2012 16:33

Yabu can't you share lanes. I remember going swimming and sharing lanes.

rainydaysarebad · 30/07/2012 16:35

I wonder what the people of syria or Iraq would make of your encounter with this "ghastly old trout" Hmm
