To wish I'd thought of a better comeback

Yesterday OH and I went to the pub as a few local bands were playing for charity (Something like 10p from every drink/food purchased went to cancer research).

I was sat outside talking to my neighbours friend, we were talking about children (I have two) and I jokingly said "I'm not having any more - I would have to sell my horse if I did".

This other man suddenly started ranting, saying "OH MY GOD, I can't believe she just said that, comparing a CHILD to a HORSE, disgusting!" I was quite surprised and said "Well, in actual fact I couldn't cope with another pregnancy." And he said "Yes, well some people are maternal and some are not".

I wish I'd just said "Well, people like you are the reason I prefer horses to humans" and walked off!

YANBU. He sounds like a dick :(

whackamole · 29/07/2012 23:53

He sounds like a STUPID dick!

extremepie · 29/07/2012 23:53

YANBU, I'm always thinking of clever comebacks I wish I had said after the moment has passed!

It's very annoying!

In this instance I wish I would have said something along the lines of

'well personally I found pregnancy quite difficult (maybe at this point lists some related medical issues I had), how did you find it?'

extremepie · 29/07/2012 23:56

Hopefully then he would reveal the extent of his dickishness with another stupid comment and save me a job of making him look like a fool : D

bejeezus · 29/07/2012 23:58

You should have glassed him
That'll learn 'im

wannabedomesticgoddess · 30/07/2012 00:00
Shock

What a prick!! Im maternal, Im on my second pregnancy and although we both want another child I dont think I could cope with another 9months of this.

YANBU.

TheCraicDealer · 30/07/2012 00:00

Even if you'd thought of one in time, he'd still be a dick. A witty comeback does make you feel better, but doesn't initiate the necessary personality transplant in the person it's aimed at. Unfortunately.

Cydonia · 30/07/2012 00:04

YANBU. However, in my case he'd probably be right! Was never broody, always more interested in animals than babies, in fact put off having children as didn't feel financially able due to expense of DHorse! Finally had 1st DC this year age 35 and though I obviously love him to bits I still probably prefer animals to other peoples children!
But in your context yes he sounds like a dick. How many children does he have?!

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 30/07/2012 00:49

No idea, I'd never met him before! This is the only thing he said.

He is partly right - I'm not maternal in the sense I get broody/love all babies/kids. I love the two I have, But my pregnancies were difficult for me as I was physically fit and mostly well before and each has had negative effects on that. Both of my children were also premature - My girl didn't need any special care but My boy did, and it was horrible! I don't want to go through that again - Its the one time I've been thankful that Lily is from a previous relationship, as it meant she wasn't suddenly left with G/Parents not understanding why and was relatively unaffected. I'd struggle with another stay in SCBU as I'd feel torn and not want to leave Corey with Gparents all the time etc, on top of the traumatic experience I found SCBU to be!

I just couldn't believe what he was saying really! I've never had a complete stranger make such judgemental comments based on one sentence they've overheard!

JumpingThroughHoops · 30/07/2012 01:16

C/b his partner can't conceive and he's just a bit touchy about the subject.

Meanwhile back in reality - animals are much nicer. Furry and cuddly!

Softlysoftly · 30/07/2012 01:36

Yabu you should never compare children and horses, my horse was so much more grateful than my children, easier to bath and feed and could be left in a field all day, you suggest doing that one time with the baby.... Grin.

I miss my horse.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 30/07/2012 02:07

Softly - I caused some alarm last weekend when, after spending an hour grooming and splating pesky horse flies by slapping them, I walked over to the 9 month old, and was about to slap him on the forehead because one landed on him. I only just caught myself, and tried to make it look as though I had always intended to gently brush it off.

I also click at the children sometimes! OH was not impressed at my encouraging corey to crawl "come on! Click click, good boy!"

I didn't even realise till he said!

Word of advice: Try not to use your children's real names on this board unless you don't want people to find out who you are in real life. If you don't care, ignore my advice.

bejeezus · 30/07/2012 07:06

Complete strangers shouldn't be making any comments based on anything they have overheard . They should butt out and STFU; he wasn't included in the conversation. that is what I would have told him

I bet he wouldn't have said anything, if he had overheard a man saying what you said

sawseesaw · 30/07/2012 07:32

I do think you're in danger of over-thinking this one OP. You made an amusing, if flippant, remark. Some horrible, aggressive, probably drunk bloke showed he was horrible, aggressive and probably drunk. Just try to forget it, I'm sure he will have.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 30/07/2012 13:17

Mynewpassion - I don't mind lol. If I needed to put anything anonymous I'd name change.

A certain kind of man has very peculiar ideas about women being 'maternal', and feels his world order is threatened if the laydeez don't go all soft 'n squishy over tiny ickle bootees.

PS I think a horse might be easier to look after by some way than my (adorable) four-month-old.
