Children watching DVD's not aimed at their age group!

Am I unreasonable to be annoyed with a good friend of mine for allowing my ds to watch all of the American Pie DVD's at her house when he went or a sleepover. He and her ds are both 12.
I collected him and she said ' oh I hope you don't mind, but the boys watched all the American Pie DVD's last night, hope that's ok.'
If she needed to tell me in that, should she not have asked me????
Or am I over reacting?

I haven't seen the American Pie DVD's - but clips I've seen seem to be quite 'rude' for want of a better word.
I wouldn't be pleased about someone else making the decision to let my child watch an older than their age DVD, - that's my decision to make, and I'd do it by watching the DVD myself first and seeing what the content was.

YANBU he is 12 American Pie is at least a 15 and I dont think it is appropriate I love them though they are immature and rude but i wouldnt allow my 14 yr old to watch them , sometimes you need to let these things slide when they are at sleepovers TBH , what did you say to your friend when she asked did you mind ?

WithoutCaution · 29/07/2012 12:44

Some of the American Pie films are fine and I wouldn't worry about those ones being watched

WithoutCaution · 29/07/2012 12:46
  • I watched Deep Blue Sea, Ghost Ship and Jeepers Creepers when I was about 12 at a sleep over
WildWorld2004 · 29/07/2012 12:54

I think it depends on the child and the movie. I dont think american pie is too inappropriate for a 12 year old.

Mrsjay · 29/07/2012 12:56

I don't this it is either it is really adult and very rude, OP next time he sleeps over get him to take some of his own DVDs round so maybe they wont watch them again ,

Sirzy · 29/07/2012 13:02

I think she should have asked you before not after

Jessamysue · 29/07/2012 13:03

Thanks for your replies. I think I'm more annoyed that she just presumed it would be ok. Also they watched it with her dh so it's not as if she didn't realise they weren't watching it.
I just think your a kid for such a short period of a time, why push this sort of thing on them.

YANBU, those films are really rude and not at all helpful for an inquisitive 12 year old. I would be fuming.

Gettheetoanunnery · 29/07/2012 13:12

Yanbu, those films have a lot of rude bits in them! Mind you I still watched all sorts behind my parents back at that age...

MissAnnersley · 29/07/2012 13:12

YANBU. I watched the first American Pie and it is absolutely not suitable for a 12 year old.

I think I'm fairly laid back too but there are scenes in that film that made me blush!

I admit I do not always pay much attention to age ratings - some old movies are rated too high IMO. The key for us, making decisions for our own DCs (and my DSCs) is whether we have seen them before ourselves. So I'd show a 12yo a 15 if I had seen it and thought it was ok, but I wouldn't pick one off the shelf for them I hadn't seen myself.

Different when it's not your own child though IMO, it really doesn't take much to text and ask "is it ok if we watch blah blah" beforehand does it?
