trombone or saxophone?

Started a thread recently and got some really great advice about my dds wish to play saxophone, for which I am very grateful

Turns out she/i was confused and what she actually wants to play is the trombone....

Now we have listened to both instruments being played, she says she doesn't mind which I she learns

I have very strong pretence for one, then the other....then it changes again.....Trombone Shorty is doing it for me at the moment!

Any advice as to which is best/ easiest/most fun, from anyone with any musical leanings at all?

Sorry this is not an AIBU (not really, just being polite)

Not as many gigs for trombone players but sax.players always get gigs. How many cool trombone solo's are there?
Diana Ross - 'Im Coming Out'
Southside Johnny - 'The Fever'
Some Frank Sinatra

but Sax?
Born to Run - Springsteen
Urgent - Foreigner
Roadrunner - Jnr.Walker (played on Urgent)
Yakkety Sax
The whole Soul/Motown catalogue
Anything by Wayne Shorter,John Coletrane and practically anything in Jazz has cool sax. somewhere.

Both are difficult instruments to master (all instruments are) so whatever the choice I salute the player

As a sax player I'd say go for the sax :D

I prefer the sound and repertoire of saxophone. But playing the trombone could give her more opportunities - as others have said, trombonists are much more in demand, and she could play in a wide variety of ensembles - big band, orchestra, brass band, wind band, jazz...

As a sax player (and clarinet) I'd say trombone - due to it being more versatile and there being less competition for places in orchestras, bands etc. further down the line. DD1 (aged 7) has recently started the trumpet after trying out the brass instruments on offer at her school. The trumpet was the one that the brass teacher felt she was best suited to. So far she's loving it.

I realise this is really getting ahead of myself but Grin secondary schools are a real fear around these parts...have just realised one of the better ones is music speciality Grin

Im thinking trombone will stand her in better stead with regards the school wanting her (because obviously she is going to be fab at whatever she chooses!)

what I am taking from this thread, is that everyone enjoys whatever instrument it is tha they play Smile It has always been a regret of mine but i am truely shite at anything musical

Boo-hoo! We've been to the shop; she tried them both. And piano and guitar! She's really taken by the piano. What a palava! Feel a bit dissapointed; was looking forward to sax/trombone. Can't get excited about the piano....

You should be relieved. An electric piano can be practised silently with headphones.

I have an electronic organ* and it's great to be able to practise in peace while DP watches his football in the same room.

*no comments about rabbits please.

I know what you mean, I love listening to the orchestras and bands the DC play in.

Piano a great base for another instrument in the future though. She will learn to read music in bass and treble clef and wil pick up an orchestral instrument faster if she chooses to later on.

I agree - learning piano is a brilliant discipline and will allow her to move on to other instruments easily. I learned piano from 7, picked up trombone at 9 and violin at 12. In the violin, I caught up with my peers who'd been learning for 3 years within a few months.

I liked violin the least though - and wind band was always more fun than orchestra too! (I played violin and trombone in orchestra at different times). I'm glad I learned the trombone as I really enjoyed playing as part of a band. But I still enjoy piano know, whereas I haven't played trombone for years. So both instruments are great! The trombone is definitely heavy though (particularly if you have to take it to school two days a week for orchestra and wind band - i think that was why I started playing violin in orchestra!). And it was all boys in the brass section, but that made it more fun.
