AIBU?

Unreasonably obsessed by flea problem?

Am I losing the plot?

I have 3 kids, 5yrs, 2yrs and 10 months. As you can imagine they need a lot of attention.

I have 2 cats who are regularly front lined but every single year they infest the house with fleas. This year is worse than ever. The 2 year old's legs are in a really dreadful state. The 5 year old is marginally better, and the baby has bites on her back and a big one on her face this morning. Sob. The fleas are in every room.

I am hoovering the entire house daily if I can, and not just a quick hoover. Pulling out all the bloody furniture and going in every nook and cranny. This is killing me, and of course the kids are very bored in the time I am doing it. I am also spraying flea spray when I can but limit this to when house will be empty etc as hate the thought of the chemicals and the kids playing on the floor where the spray is.

I also have mastitis and yesterday spent the day feeling shit and hoovering in tropical temperatures.

And then at bedtime I saw about 5 fleas.

WWYD?

Am I blowing this out of proportion? Should I just calm it down as it doesn't seem to be working anyway. Is it as big a deal as I feel it is?

Or any tips on getting rid of them?

Any advice appreciated.

It sounds like you need to flea bomb every room... you can buy them online. Flea collars on both cats at all times. Out flea collars inside your hoover bag to kill any you hoover up, otherwise they just breed and come back out. Spray all fabric material curtains sofas etc and set your bombs off.

Failing that the only thing that will 100%work if you have the money of course. Is pay an exterminator, they will come and professionally flea bomb your home & check all is good after.

Lastly flea collars are a must, in my experience front line etc is just not enough on its own sadly.

I change my cats collars every two months. They sell flea collars in the 99p and pound land so I use them for inside my hoover bags. Good luck!

Make sure you are concentrating your spraying on the edges of the carpet, at the base of the skirting boards and the round the bottom of any furniture you can't move to spray under, that is where they like to lay their eggs. And spray inside the Hoover so live ones in there can't just climb out again.

Also, treat the cats regularly and make sure they go into all the rooms in the house. Otherwise the odd flea will get into a no cat allowed room and the cat won't go in so the fleas bite you and live in the carpet rather than dying on the cat.

The fleas are definitely worse this year because of such a mild winter. My two cats have managed to infest the house for the first time, despite even more frequent flea treatments. DH came home with some spray stuff which I covered every soft furnishing and corner of the house with and have been hoovering like mad. It seems to have done the trick.

Does anyone know how much it would cost to have Rentokill type (not them specifically) companies in to treat your house? £50? £100?

The cars need treating at the vets. And indorex spray I think it's called. Spray all carpets, skirting boards, close all windows and doors, wait half an hour, then open windows to ventilate rooms and Hoover the floors for 7 consecutive days. Also wash bedding and things on the hottest temperature they can take.
My cat had fleas and my legs were covered. We did it. It works.

I had this problem!!! It was awful! Me not the children got bitten but OH was covered with bites on his legs. If you want to get rid of the problem you need to do the whole house, not just sections that aren't being used.

There's a very large yellow tinned spray which is a little pricey at about £16 if I remember rightly from Pets at Home. This stuff is a miracle worker. You need to prob buy two bottles to make sure you get the little buggers in one hit. Close all windows, Hoover dramatically and do room by room, skirtings, under beds, wardrobes the lot. Close door and leave to do the next room. It's so important that you do the whole house at once and cover the place till the room is misty with it... OTT. Go out for a few hours then when you get home air it and hoover again. If that doesn't do it you need to get the big boys in but speaking from experience and mine was really really really bad it done the job for mine.

Good luck

Staykill is the best but not sure if it's available anymore! Indorex is quite good!
