To go cycling with my 15mo at 10wks preg

I bought a child seat that sits in front of the cyclist so I can see DD at all times but a friend thinks she's too young and it's too dangerous - but I will only be cycling for fun - not on roads mostly along sea fronts etc.

I have also looked into bike helmets and been told by the cycle shop that helmets on under 2's would cause more damage than good due to their malleable skulls so AIBU to go cycling in the first place at 10wks pregnant and WWYD regarding the helmet!! It wouldn't feel right not to use one!

Im a nervous cyclist, and being pregnant too i personally wouldnt. I know nothing is likely to go wrong but I wouldnt have the confidence. If you do though thats good for you, i would definitely say use a helmet for you both though dont see how the person at the shop said it would be harmful

Eastpoint · 28/07/2012 07:45

I think you have to ask yourself how you'd feel if anything happened. Where will you be riding? If it is somewhere with little traffic & a short distance why not, but why take risks on a busy road.

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 28/07/2012 07:46

Cycling on the sea front sounds lovely.

And specialized do a toddler helmet, which I would deffo use.

An0therName · 28/07/2012 07:50

we cycle a lot with our DC - from under 1 - and they love it - careful about going on busy road - as it sound like you would be
I would want a helmet on any DC I had on a bike - I have never heard that about that about the under 2 - so I would check -and we bought our helmet online

  • I have also cycled a fair bit when pregnant - I would say with the kind of cycling you are doing the risks are very small
MammaTJ · 28/07/2012 07:51

As far as cycling while pregnant, I was advised by my MW that it was a great idea. I know that towards the end of the pregnancy, it was easier to cycle than to waddlewalk.

Grumpla · 28/07/2012 07:51

I think the front seats are dangerous, sorry.

I'd have her on the back or a trailer. And I would never have a child on a bike without a helmet.

How often do you cycle normally? If you have been cycling with a heavily laden bike regularly up until now with no symptoms then that's a bit different from starting to cycle now. Similarly it depends where you plan to cycle.

Personally I cycled daily until about 3/4 months in my first pregnancy when I found my stamina suddenly dropped and I began to feel wobbly after the hills.

I didn't cycle with DS on the back at all during my second pregnancy, I was too busy vomiting to get on a bike and then my SPD kicked in.

Herbsmum · 28/07/2012 07:52

For heavens sake. You aren't going to leave he helmet on to sleep in. As long as its not too tight. Fresh air, exercise, one to one time with your dc, and you aren't planning to traverse any main roads, it's a no brainer for me.

sensuallettuce · 28/07/2012 08:28

I was told by my GP when I had a miscarriage that if you are going o lose a baby you will lose it, and there aren't many things you can do to "cause" a miscarriage.

Things they advise you not to do physically are for your own health and well being because your ligaments/muscle tissues are softer during pregnancy - the baby is in an amniotic sac and very protected.

shuckleberryfinn · 28/07/2012 08:44

I cycled at up to 4-5 months pregnant with my then 5 year old in the child seat, I continued to cycle without him right through my pregnancy. I did this with the full support of my midwife. If you are not overdoing it then I say go for it, as long as you are experienced at it and don't overdo things, nothing worse than feeling grotty from overexercise.

As for the helmet it really is one of those lesser of two evils things. I have a specialized helmet for my toddler, it was a 1st birthday present for her. She does wear it as do I. I thought the issue was more the weight/shape of the helmet could damage the neck in certain impacts but I could be wrong.

bigkidsdidit · 28/07/2012 08:48

Our DS has been in his bike seat since 6 months (although it's a back one), he loves it. It'll be fine :)

PacificDogwood · 28/07/2012 08:49

Why on earth would you NOT cycle with your toddler when you're pregnant if you want to??

Personally, I don't like handlebar mounted kid's seats because they change the balance of the bike so much and I find make steering awkward. I've a variety of DSs on bike seats on the back from about 9 months onwards and they've all loved it.

bigkidsdidit · 28/07/2012 08:49

Oh and I have never heard that about helmets and DH is a very keen cyclist always on cycle chat forums. We have a specialised toddler helmet. He only wears it an hour a time!

imnotmymum · 28/07/2012 08:51

Do it !! She will love it you will get some exercise and feel better and the lovely sea air will be fab.

Downandoutnumbered · 28/07/2012 08:55

Of course YANBU. I cycled up to the day I went into labour - it was much, much easier than walking by the end. 15 months is definitely old enough, and an hour or two in a properly-fitting helmet won't do any harm.

AlpinePony · 28/07/2012 08:56

I would, and did (with a helmet on the passenger!).

AlpinePony · 28/07/2012 08:57

Incidentally I bought the helmet from a cycle shop and it's no heavier than a packet of biscuits!

DontEatTheVolesKids · 28/07/2012 09:25

Front seats are supposed to have better C of G & be more stable than rear seats. Probably depends on model.

If yabu then so am I, DC were in bike seats by 6-8 months & I cycled at all stages pregnant (as did my Midwife, I got complimented for it by the hospital staff when I went for a scan at 34 weeks, too, so Neener).

UnderwaterBasketWeaving · 28/07/2012 09:33

Front seats: after extensive research, we like the WeeRide crossbar mounted front seat.

Although it's too hilly here and I'm too unfit to get out much!

Wish we had a nice flat sea front nearby!

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 28/07/2012 09:37

Alison Hargreaves climbed The Eiger at over 5 months pregnant.

So long as you are fit, safe, competent and confident YANBU!

LeandarBear · 28/07/2012 10:36

YANBU,
It would not even have crossed my mine it might be a problem. Confused

Rosduk · 28/07/2012 11:38

We have the weeride crossbar seat. I won't be on busy roads and although I haven't cycled much since my DD was born I am an experienced cyclist!

I will get the toddler helmet. It's funny I wasn't considering this an issue until a judgy pants friend stuck her oar in!!!

Thanks all

If you don't go on roads, and are not going to be whizzing down hills, I can't see the problem.
