WWYD

Her birthday is in August

Thought maybe a BBQ or picnic?

Totally stuck for birthday presents too! Any ideas?

I'm having a garden party for family with high tea - cucumber sandwiches, scones, trifle. There will be bunting. And I'm buying dd a swing (am massively excited!)

cheekypickle · 27/07/2012 20:54

Any other ideas??

My DD was 1 last December. My inlaws hosted. We had high tea. Went a little OTT-had a gorgeous cake made, champagne and fireworks when it got dark (DH had the foresight to stock up during the post Bonfire Night sales!). Her main present from us was a rocking horse.

OP-I think either idea would be lovely-although I would veer towards the BBQ-I think.

Re present ideas-Wheelybug, nice wooden trike, small rocking horse or such like?

cheekypickle · 27/07/2012 21:00

Oh wheelybugs a great idea

Thats, what I thought pickle, but DD doesn't care for it! She goes on the rocking horse (it's not huge)but isn't really interested in "sit and ride" toys or trikes.

YABU.

holyfishnets · 27/07/2012 22:06

picnic sounds lovely. my 17 month old loves his plastic baby and buggy, his books, a huge little tykes car, his bulky hand held toddler paints, his shoes, his sand pit, his swing, his paddling pool and anything with buttons that makes noises or lights up

holyfishnets · 27/07/2012 22:07

basic jigsaws

Fuzzymuzz · 27/07/2012 22:17

We got my daughter a rag doll which she loves... though to be honest we knew sho would as she has a thing for soft toys Grin

Loshad · 27/07/2012 23:29

many years ago i bought ds1, then 1 a little tykes small plastic climbing frame with a little slide for his birhtday. We have had literally years of fun from it (though i use it to hold up jumping poles now Grin)

BlingBubbles · 27/07/2012 23:30

My DD had her 1st party last Saturday and we had a Mickey mouse clubhouse party theme, just had friends round in the garden, made some nibbles and hot dogs etc. was a great day out in the garden Grin

BlingBubbles · 27/07/2012 23:31

We got her one of those 3-1 trikes, she loves it.

WorraLiberty · 27/07/2012 23:33

I would have a quiet night in with my DH and spend the day looking at baby pics etc.

I've never understood throwing parties or BBQs for 1yr olds, it kind of smacks of present grabbing if you invite people to a baby's party.

That's just my opinion though.

LilQueenie · 27/07/2012 23:38

we had a small party with ice cream and jelly as a treat. pass the parcel and stick tail on the donkey all done with help from us of course. Small group of family attended and presents consisted of first doll, ride on toy, ball pit and more. She loved it.

Due to DH and I having work commitments the day of our DD 1st Birthday we celebrated in a slightly different way. DH was working all evening and I was working all day so we celebrated with a Family Birthday Breakfast.

I made cake the night before and had a selection of breakfast treats. I bought her a play tent and a few small gifts with a birthday balloon. She was slightly puzzled but we had a great little party at 6am! I would say don't go mad! I spent £70 on presents which was just crazy. She is one, the play tent and the balloon was more than enough. The tent is the only thing she still plays with and it was less than £25.

I also have some lovely pictures of her playing that morning.

Worra, I'm not religious so didn't christen my children and a naming ceremony seemed a little contrived. Their first birthday was the first "natural" occasion to celebrate them joining our wider family. Lovely and relaxed party in the garden for dd1. Similar (but not in the garden as it was February and snowing) for dd2. I can asure you that both were the antithesis of present grabbing.
1 year olds don't care about presents though OP. Get loads of old boxes, wrapping paper and some balloons and she'll be ecstatically happy ;)

baconcrisps · 28/07/2012 17:29

Only on mumsnet AIBU could throwing a party descend into insinuations of being "grabby"

PenisVanLesbian · 28/07/2012 18:13

Any suggestions? Yes, CHAT.

FredFredGeorge · 28/07/2012 18:28

Erm - the same as every other day but add a cake and a present - she's 1, I don't think she understands birthdays.

rathlin · 28/07/2012 18:33

My friend's DD is 1 next week and I bought her a rag doll with her name on the dress from gettingpersonal.co.uk as I wanted to get her something a little special that she would hopefully have for a long time. Silver Cross also do nice boxed rag dolls.

GodisaDj · 28/07/2012 18:54

We've had a little party this afternoon for DD's 1st birthday next week (we're away for her actual birthday)

Guests were mainly family and close friends with their similar aged babies.

Food was typical sandwiches - egg mayo/tomato, tuna mayo/cucumber, naice ham salad. Finger food and dips and copious amounts of scones, clotted cream, jam and cakes! Big pot of tea on the go all day and some pink cava as I had some for Xmas left over.

Theme - there wasn't one. Stuck a bit of bunting up, brought pink check serviettes and put all of her current toys (including ball pit) in the garden and living room. Kids moved from each space and bigger kids played with each other.

Presents. I've not brought her anything and don't plan to as she doesn't necessarily need anything at the min. I have got her a couple of books and an outfit to wrap up for her but like I say, we're on our holidays on her actual birthday and she will no doubt have lots of treats with us. Didn't expect presents today and asked for just nice cards for her keep sake box, but she has had a present off everyone. Touched me really as wasn't expecting it.

Bonus is that DD was in bed at 6.20pm after party, utterly exhausted and I'm half asleep on the sofa, it's been a long day but lots of lovely memories Smile

Handsfullandrunningforgold · 28/07/2012 18:59

We had a family picnic in a local park. It was lovely - very relaxed. Got loads of photos of DT's covered in birthday cake and we just lazed around under a tree eating while the DC ran around playing.

pointythings · 28/07/2012 21:05

DD1 has a January birthday so we had tea and cakes - small but select gathering, not too many presents. We cut DD a piece of cake, sat her on a canvas sheet with it, let her have at it and just took lots of photos. I think at that age the presents don't matter that much.
