To put a 3 month old in an upright, forward facing pushchair?

Ecgwynn · 27/07/2012 15:55

I noticed today that my 3 month old DS's feet are touching the end of his pram. We have a silver cross 3D which converts into a forward facing pushchair. Is he too young to face forwards? He can't sit up yet but loves looking at the world. He's 60cm long and 5.5kg. There is no 'half reclined but facing the parent' option that some other travel systems have.

Sorry, I know this isn't really an AIBU, but I wanted some advice!

YABU. I don't think it's very good for their backs or necks, especially if you go and about so he'd be in the buggy a lot. He also might get over tired if he can't sleep sitting up.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 27/07/2012 16:01

YABU. His back and neck won't be ready for it. You will have to get another buggy.

cheekypickle · 27/07/2012 16:02

He needs to be able to lie down.

Wait until 6months at least

PurplyWurply · 27/07/2012 16:02

YABVVU

DawnOfTheDee · 27/07/2012 16:03

YABU - It would be bad for his back and also increases the chance of 'flat head' syndrome.

Debeez · 27/07/2012 16:05

YABU. He won't be able to support his head properly. New buggy I'm afraid. Ebay and charity shops are good if you weren't expecting to have to shell out again so soon.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 27/07/2012 16:07

I wouldn't tbh. DS is very long and grew out of his carrycot at 2 months so went into his pram seat but it has a 3 position recline with an option to lie flat. Even now at 18 weeks I wouldn't put him in the most upright position because he would just slump forward.

Have you checked the instructions as I know someone with a 3D and I'm sure it has a multi position recline. If it has it'll be fine facing forward.

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 27/07/2012 16:09

I thought the 3D laid flat in forward facing mode? He wouldn't need to be sat upright.

PeazlyPops · 27/07/2012 16:14

YABU.

3 month old babies need to lie flat, it would be better for his feet to touch the bottom of the pram, than for him to be upright.

Ecgwynn · 27/07/2012 16:18

I think it might lie flat actually. But forward facing isn't a problem? What about semi reclined?

Thanks for your advice. I know nothing about babies, I'm surprised they let me have one.

Yes, you are.

We have the same pram, and although it is a bit snug as a pram, it's Bloody HUGE as a buggy - DD is 7.5 months and the harness is absolutely massive - he hands come out of the sides easily and it's on the tightest setting with the wadding behind.

She was in the pram bit until about a month ago - it was a bit squashy, I admit, but she moved around a lot, so it wasn't too bad.
make sure his head is right at the top and don't have any blankets or sheets etc (that harness thing is next to useless, so without that there's a bit more space)

I would worry more about the harness than the rear-facing (and it does recline right to flat as a buggy)

lastnerve · 27/07/2012 16:25

can you have it facing you slightly reclining??

TheNinjaGooseIsOnAMission · 27/07/2012 16:27

being flat is more important than which way he's facing, so laying flat facing away from you will be fine.

DanyTargaryen · 27/07/2012 16:30

If you are anywhere near birmingham i am currently trying to sell my mamas and papas pliko switch which does parent facing plus has newborn recline.
Let me know

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/07/2012 16:38

lastnerve - no - facing you it's just a pram.

It has a kind of basket that you hook over the frame, and when it's got that on, it can only lie flat.

when it's not got the basket on, it can be in 4 different reclining/seating positions, but only facing away.

Ninja I wouldn't advise lying flat facing away, because to do that, you have to take the basket off, which means that there is no support except the buggy harness, and as I said before, it's too big for a small baby.

Ecgwynn · 27/07/2012 16:55

nickelbarapasaurus - Thanks for the advice. His head is right at the top and his toes just touch the end. I think he could grow another few cms and still be ok. How long was your DD when you moved it out of pram mode?

I think it's a bit weird to design a pram which doesn't fit a 3 month old baby, DS is on the 50th centile for length so it isn't even as if he's freakishly long. Maybe I'll have to stay at home until he grows into the pushchair!

Have you tried sitting him semi-reclined using a head hugger or similar for padding and support? It might give you enough support for now.

Stangirl · 27/07/2012 17:10

I shall go completely against the grain here and say YANBU.

DC2 was a big 'un and grew out of his carrycot at around 3 months. I put him into the forward facing seat in reclined position and he has been fine.

onebigwish · 27/07/2012 17:13

I'm sure I put mine in a Maclaren at either three or four months, and that that was the minimum age. Though I maybe hallucinating...

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/07/2012 17:15

she was 67cm, i think.

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/07/2012 17:15

I agree about the design - totally weird. Confused

waterwatereverywhere · 27/07/2012 17:16

I don't think the direction of your pushchair matters a jot. Its the lie flat bit that's the issue.

I would put a 3 month only in a front facing flat/almost flat pushchair. In fact you have little choice but to have them front facing in most doubles.

I would not put a 3 month only in a pushchair that did not recline flat/almost flat.

UnnamedFemaleProtagonist · 27/07/2012 17:16

YABVVU. I would judge.

peanutMD · 27/07/2012 17:17

The 3d lays flat forward facing.

It wouldn't be my first choice but it won't do your baby any harm to forward face. I know lots of people who use a layflat forward facing pushchair from birth. Just make check round regularly.

Is there a viewing window in the hood?

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/07/2012 17:18

it's the harness, not the flatness that i don't like.

no viewing window. you're completely blind when it's forward facing.
