To think this is too many teachers for a primary school child?

First off, let me say I support the right in principle for teachers to have flexible working but we are in the situation with DD where she has 4 different teachers every week. Is this too many? (small rural school, composite classes, so this situation will carry on into next year too)

Teacher 1 - Monday
Teacher 2 - Tuesday and Wednesday morning
Teacher 3 - wednesday afternoon
Teacher 4 - Thursday and Friday

I always kept out of things concerning schools, hoping to encourage DCs to assume teachers know best (according them some respect) and leaving it to them.

Now think how useful it would have been to eg know what the full curriculum is for them in any year (then you can check DCs cover it), find out what the recommended homework is for any age group etc.

Think I would be a bit concerned at this and I would want to know why this is happening - could they not find staff? is someone on partial sick leave?

This is a time I would ask about curriculum and who is teaching what so you get a feel for whether they are covering what is required to the right depth and everyone isn't assuming someone else is taking responsibility for stuff.

But will prob get Blah Blah from teachers on here saying it's none of my business.

I would be really unhappy with this op. I taught primary for 6 years. It was really important to build up a relationship with these children and to provide true continuity between and across subjects of course it is better if there is only one form teacher.

Ridiculous. It's about time schools were run for the benefit of the children, instead of for the teachers. If your family is more important than your job, you shouldn't be teaching. It's not a job that you can fit around other things, it's a vocation.

If your family is more important than your job, you shouldn't be teaching

Surely most people in a range of jobs regard their family as their most important priority.

It's not a job that you can fit around other things, it's a vocation

Oh, that old chestnut. It's providing a service which you should discharge conscientiously, with integrity and to the best of your ability - for which you are then remunerated. You'll be suggesting teachers shouldn't be paid next and because it's a vocation they should be happy to toil selflessly out of passion for the job.

Judging by your posts on the thread about unqualified/qualified teachers, you don't care for teachers much, do you?

I have to say that however much I disagree with the idea of 4 different teachers for a primary class, i disagree more with the ridiculous comment by Denise. Teaching is a job. I am sure 99% of the population rate their family more important than their job. It doesn't mean they don't do their job properly. It's simply about priorities. It's just daft to think that certain things like teaching and nursing are somehow on a different plane and people should be doing them out of the goodness of their heart!

I have already said : any employer should consider the clients and the needs of the employer, not just allow flexible working which suits the worker only. But I categorically disagree With the outdated notion that any job is a 'vocation', which implies its done out of goodwill alone, and takes precedence over every other aspect of life

My dd has just finished a year with two which worked well but I do feel 4 is a lot but at the end of the day I am sure the school has looked into it at great length as they want the best for the children I would have thought.

ohnevermind · 27/07/2012 20:03

I once taught in a class with 3 other teachers and it was madness. It wasn't done in the best interests of the children at all; the only person to benefit was the lazy head. The problem was that no one teacher had a good enough handle on how the children were progressing.

DeWe · 27/07/2012 20:40

Ds had 4 teachers this year if you count the HTA cover.
The HTA cover did (I think) Tuesday afternoons all year.
In Winter term he had teacher A 2.5 days, teacher B 2 days.
After that he had Teacher B 2.5 days, teacher C 2 days.

Sounds dreadful put like that. But actually (and he's not easy) it's been great for him. It means that if he's had a low day early in the week, he feels he's got a clean start when the second teacher starts. The HTA is lovely and I'm upset that she's leaving this term. The teachers have communicated well, and have complemented each other.

DeWe · 27/07/2012 20:42

Oh and for those saying relationships, ds' favourite teacher is teacher C, (who only moved to his class after Christmas) but he is quite happy with the others. Took about 2-3 weeks to get used to the HTA but would still give her a hug if we saw her out.
He's in reception.

Emmielu · 27/07/2012 20:43

I think my only concern will be if there is any lack of communication between all 4 teachers. As long as each teacher knows what the other is doing & they themselves know what they're doing, then ok. Weird to have 4 teachers though for 1 class.

Gone are the days when it was 1 teacher. & on the odd maybe 3 days a week assistant.

If your family is more important than your job, you shouldn't be teaching

And you've some tough competition aswell, I can tell you.

Turn that on its head and you might get closer to the truth - if your job is more important to you than your children, you shouldn't have any.

I consider myself to be a dedicated teacher, and I love my job - but not more than I love my son, you loon!

Feenie · 27/07/2012 20:50

OP, it doesn't sound right at all - how can the children get any continuity in Literacy and Numeracy learning, with three different teachers teaching in the mornings?
