To remind you that cyclists have ears too?

At the weekend, went to the beach to do cycling along the coastal path, which is split in half, one side for pedestrians, one side for cyclists.

More than once, whilst cycling in the appropriate part of the lane, I had snippy remarks made by pedestrians. Such as "you'd think they'd use their bell" (directed at me when a lady suddenly walked across the front of my bike in the cycle lane as I was about to pass. No mishap, and we'd both said "sorry!" and started to carry on when the man with her piped up) and "you'd think they'd get off and walk" as I was getting off my bike to walk. (cycle path quite busy with pedestrians but still cycle-able if I'd wanted).

I didn't make comments or give looks at all the pedestrians hogging the cycle lane, so why is it appropriate to be a twunt to me, using the cycle lane as I should? Be aware I can hear you and be aware that some paths are for cyclists too and pay attention to signs!

You're meant to hear them.

That's a pointed remark. It is aimed at you for you to hear.

I think you are supposed to pretend that you didn't hear it Hmm

StunningCunt · 27/07/2012 12:51

I just ignore pointed remarks or say something more pointed back.

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:02

I did say I had as much right to use this cycle path as they did. Very loudly.

I know that I am supposed to hear. I'd rather they stopped being such twats as I am doing nothing wrong. I have just started cycling, and it's so horrible to have your day out marred by twats.

OP posts:
cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:03

To be clear, I only made my comment after one of the comments directed at me, and as I said in the OP, I made no comments/looks etc at innocent folks wandering around the cycle path.

imnotmymum · 27/07/2012 13:03

Don't let it ruin your day meh!

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:05

It doesn't ruin the day, but it doesn't enhance it either.

OP posts:
DinahMoHum · 27/07/2012 13:06

use the fucking bell then

LilllyLovesLife · 27/07/2012 13:08

I would reply and say - "you could always not walk in the cycle lane and use the pedestrian one instead."

Or if your not on your own you could use the same tactics and say to your friend "You'd think they would stay out the cycle lane if they don't like it"

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:08

Excuse me dinah?

What the fuck did I do to deserve that comment?

OP posts:
cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:09

I think I might stop and say that next time lilly.

I don't know whether to laugh at how patronising the 'reminder' is or just chuckle at the mental image I have of cyclists with huge Gary Linekar type ears, sticking out the sides of their helmets?

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:13

Why patronising worra?

OP posts:
scuzy · 27/07/2012 13:14

how slow are you cycling to hear all these comments?

HecateHarshPants · 27/07/2012 13:15

Challenge them. We're supposed to ignore the pointed remark aimed into the air, but that doesn't mean we have to. Grin

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:16

Quite slowly. I am new to cycling and using a cycle path that has people and children wandering in and out of it. I slow down too when approaching any small children as I don't want to run them over tbh.

Weirdly rude Dinah. And I think you'll find that if you do use your bell that pisses people off too Confused. You can't win on a bike. Sod them though its a brilliant way to travel (someone who lives 1.5 miles outside town, bus is £4 now as is parking I feel very smug cycling about parking my bike right in centre).

OP in my old age I have become much more bolshy and am afraid I would have said something back. You obviously nicer/kinder than I am Grin.

scuzy · 27/07/2012 13:17

doesnt sound like much fun. go out on the road with ear phones in and be oblivious to cars and traffic like i see on the roads every day.

WorraLiberty · 27/07/2012 13:17

Why patronising?

Read your thread title again Grin

kerala · 27/07/2012 13:18

Oh and I got tutted and eye rolled by an enormously fat lady in car because my DDs were on their little bikes crossing a road she wanted to turn into (we were crossing road before she pulled up to the side road junction). Irked me too.

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:18

Grin hecate

The thread isn't suppose to be patronising at all, as I've said, I am new to cycling, and thus new to dealing with these incidents. I was very surprised it happened. When I've seen the various threads about cycling on here I didn't really get how nasty some people are to cyclists.

OP posts:
cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:19

Kerala that's exactly why I didn't use my bell and slowed down instead.

I was afraid of being lamped if I used it!

OP posts:
scuzy · 27/07/2012 13:19

i sm not nasty to cyclists but dont think much of the ones around here. going to get themselves or someone else killed.

cuntflapwankbadger · 27/07/2012 13:21

worra I am now worried I'll end up with gary linekar ears.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 27/07/2012 13:24

Get them pierced and hang noisy wind chimes from them Grin

scuzy · 27/07/2012 13:24

Grin worra ... not need for bell then we'd hear ye chiming before we saw ye!
