To dislike the term "Team GB"

First it's factually wrong since athletes from Northern Ireland are eligible, which is part of the UK (=Britain) but not part of the island of Great Britain.

Also what's all this "team" business about anyway? We don't say "Team Arsenal" or "Team Manchester United".

Are we the only country to host the Olympics to not even call itself by its real name?

@ChickensHaveNoLips

It makes me think of Team America, and then I start laughing.

Hmm

Oh, but wouldn't it be brilliant if they did?

nappydaysagain · 27/07/2012 14:41

I like the team bit Smile

Trazzletoes · 27/07/2012 14:44

DH and I were at the football yesterday sport dropping! and he asked me why it was Team GB... I explained to him that it was a shortening of GB and NI... He asked me what about the Republic of Ireland people and why they didn't get a mention in the team name... Confused

Erm, maybe because they have their OWN COUNTRY? Why on earth would they want to be a part of ours??!! This from a well-educated man... bonkers.

Trazzletoes · 27/07/2012 14:45

Unsurprisingly, the Americans are Team USA. Perhaps we stole it from them...

redlac · 27/07/2012 14:47

Trazzletoes - I wondered if they had their own Team too - perhaps because the Flame went to Dublin! whats that all about then?

Trazzletoes · 27/07/2012 14:51

I think we were sharing the love as Ireland is unlikely to get the Olympics themselves...

Trazzletoes · 27/07/2012 14:51

Poor grammar, sorry!

AmIthatbad · 27/07/2012 14:56

Mary Peters won gold for GB - and she was from Northern Ireland.

Denise how provocative Hmm

And there were two Scots in the Women's football team. The reason there were none in the men's was that they weren't selected, I believe, rather than any patriotic/nationalistic reason.

Oh, and OP, I dislike the term "Team......" as well - I don't know why but it just seems so High School Musically...............Go Team!!!!

AmIthatbad · 27/07/2012 14:58

Blush sorry Euphemia just noticed your post about the footie

wigglybeezer · 27/07/2012 15:17

I thought that there were no scots in the mens football team because of a dispute between FIFA and all the British football associations, FIFA would prefer us to have a GB team all the time for theworldcup etc. rather than four separate teams, this is the reasonably we don't usually put a team in the Olympics as It could set a precedent. The English and welsh FA's agreed to risk to it this once but the SFA didn't reach agreement ( I acknowledge that there would not have been many Scots in the team anyway). I got this info from DH soit might not be 100% accurate!

wigglybeezer · 27/07/2012 15:18

Sorry about the dodgy typing, on phone.

Trazzletoes · 27/07/2012 15:20

Wiggly the Scottish football types were allowed to play if they wanted, they just weren't selected for the squad. Initially there was hoo-haa (sp?) about them/Welsh/Northern Irish playing but they sorted it out in the end, I think, although they still aren't overly happy about it, I don't think.

FannyPriceless · 27/07/2012 15:37

YABU to merely 'dislike' it. Every time I hear it my hands start making angry fists and my mouth forms an involuntary snarl. It is beyond wrong. I actually think it is offensive.

Even if we put aside the 'Team' rubbish (which is a complete joke, btw) what the hell is with the GB? Great Britain is an island. It is not a country. United Kingdom is a country, which happens to include Northern Ireland.

Why is it not simply United Kingdom? Why did they have to complicate the name and actually make it less accurate than it was before?

DublinMammy · 27/07/2012 16:20

We were delighted that we got to see the flame here in Dublin (it's true, Trazzle, no way we would ever be in a position to host the Olympics). Hats off to Team GB/ Team GBNI/ Team UK/ Team UKofGB&NI or whatever mad name the PR people have inflicted on you for sending to down over the border.....
