MrsBucketxx · 26/07/2012 17:02

and mine don't go in it without protection. you can get vitamin d suppliments over the counter anyway.

QuenelleOJersey2012 · 26/07/2012 17:04

When I see these thread vs another thread threads I always think of that number one song by that bloke that was followed by that other song by that woman. ...or it might have been the other way round...

DontEatTheVolesKids · 26/07/2012 17:07

Norty.

Oh, and yanbu Grin

Subarashii · 26/07/2012 17:09

A little bit of sun is good for you. The stuff you synthesise yourself is superior to a capsule. I think never letting them out without sun cream is bonkers.

JumpingThroughHoops · 26/07/2012 17:10

I call them The Blue People - all translucent, and veiny, coffin dwellers Grin

Inneedofbrandy · 26/07/2012 17:16

Im with you OP but then mine are mixrace and I only ever put suncream on if we will be out all day in the sun or in water. I do wonder though how your body would ever get used to the sun if its never been exposed.

Inneedofbrandy · 26/07/2012 17:18

Abit bonkers to be like oh tarquin and florence before you go to the shop put your suncream on the UV rays will get you!!

frustratedpants · 26/07/2012 17:19

Yanbu- You can judge away. It wont change the fact that I won't allow my kids in the SN without factor 50.

Ps; they dont have a vitamin deficiency or rickets; I just don't want lobster children. Grin

coribells · 26/07/2012 17:22

YANBU. I only put sunscreen on of out playing in direct sun for more than a couple of hours. I think you need build up a bit of a tan as natural protection- and I'm Australian .

helloclitty · 26/07/2012 17:23

It's like everything in life isn't it, everything in moderation. Take precautions not to get burnt but really....never letting your child in the sun without cream on?

OP posts:

Mine have suncrea before 3pm, after 3pm they are allowed out without it (as the suns not too strong), dd2 had mild heat stroke 2 days ago as dh let her play outside for 2 hours without sun cream or a hat Angry, its not worth you kids getting burn and after a skin cancer scare earlier this year i am extra carefull.

eurochick · 26/07/2012 17:27

YANBU. We are built to need the sun. I completely agree - everything in moderation.

I actually think the way everyone seemed to go about it when we were kids was about right (save for the SPF nos which were too low) - suntan lotion for long periods outside in your home country and any time outside where the sun is stronger. Sun tan lotion not necessary for a bit of time running around in the garden or park.

That's just my view but I think the current sun tan lotion obsession is bonkers. Human beings have existed for millenia without it and we have all evolved quite nicely to suit the conditions in which we live (excepting emigration).

simperingsally · 26/07/2012 17:33

I agree op.
my dd is mixed race and has vit d deficiency. so i do let her out with out suncream (obviously not 12-3) and get a few comments from mums in the park etc and a few Hmm looks.

helloclitty · 26/07/2012 17:36

I agree eurochick.

It is fairly obvious the skin cancer increases now are from the era of extended travel to hotter climes and obsession with tanning and using low factors circa 1970.
I have experience as three of my family have had skin cancer (all surviving thankfully) however the causes in my family are certainly from living abroad and using no sun cream at all.

There is also an increase in rickets especially in the middle classes. The doctors are putting it down to an obsession with over factoring all year round. Life is not all or nothing it should be balanced.

I hope your dd is building up the vitamins now. I read that mixed race children will of course have a more natural protection to the sun and therefore it's harder for them to absorb the essentials from the sun.

The differing views on here are very interesting, to the point of others giving looks and judging parents who have different views on sun protection. It's so ridiculous.

PorkyandBess · 26/07/2012 17:41

My kids have got inappropriate suntans right now, despite factor 50.

They've never been sunburnt though.

BlingLoving · 26/07/2012 17:45

Umm, human beings have existed for millennia without sub screen - yes but a) european people probably were covered head to foot for modesty reason and b) (more importantly) there wasn't a hole in the ozone layer, global warming etc.

Not that I am obsessed with never letting ds out without cream but not because I think it was ok for people 100 years ago so must be ok for me.

NigellaTufnel · 26/07/2012 17:51

My DS2 is always smothered in factor 50. but then again he can get sunburnt so very easily. For example on a cloudy day in May he got blisters on his face. Never again.

But then again, I am incredibly middle class Grin
