to ask how many clothes your children have?

I have 3 children (7,9,11) and they each have loads of clothes (mainly hand me downs - once we accepted one lot whole bin bag fulls started to appear). I want to have a big clear out and charity-shop most of them (storage problems, clothes everywhere). The problem is that I'm not sure what the minimum is that it is reasonable to go down to.

So what is the smallest wardrobe that you think that children this age can get by on without it being too much of an issue (excepting uniform)?

My dc's have about 10 tshirts, a smart shirt about 7/8 pairs of shorts and the same trousers each so it doesn't matter if I don't wash for a few days(mucky boys so no chance of wearing anything for more than a day).

Sirzy · 26/07/2012 10:32

Too many, but most of his are hand me downs.

He is 2.9 and has about 7 pairs of trousers and 20 t shirts

Kayano · 26/07/2012 10:35

I have a 5 month old dd. I have hand me downs to last til she is 5! Just got given some amazing dresses yesterday! I'm guite lucky as they are brands I couldn't afford so they are getting vacuum stored ASAP lol.

ATM she has 1/2 rail per size as she is growing so quickly! I think I've only bought her 2 outfits per size myself though!

KellyElly · 26/07/2012 10:53

For winter - two coats (one really warm, one rain coat), 6 x pairs of tights, 1 x wellies, 1 x boots, 1 x trainers, 1 x clarks shoes, couple of skirts, pair of shorts that can be worn with tights, around 14 tops (6 x jumpers, couple of fleeces/really warm tops, long sleeved thinner tops for autumn time), 3/4 pairs of jeans/trousers. I get her less in summer.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 26/07/2012 11:03

i find with boys you can get away with quite a lot less.
Both of mine have far too mcuh stuff in their wardrobes, but DD seems to at least get to wear everything. DS lives in the same 3/4 pair of jeans, couple of joggers, 10ish tshirts on rotation...hes 4 but has an 'opinion' most annoying! Grin DD has to accessories things so random fluffy gillets and and different tights for different outfits etc....shes 3 ffs! They must be rebelling aganst their scruffy ass mom Grin

how about you dont do the washing for a week or two... everything still in the wardrobe gets charity shopped!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 26/07/2012 11:17

Far too many!

I do pass them on to friends every now and then but then people give me things too so I still end up with loads.

redskyatnight · 26/07/2012 11:44

Do the children change after school? If they don't I think you can get away with about 4 changes for everyday plus some "smarter" clothes plus sports clothes. I find the DC's casual clothes mostly sit in their drawers apart from school holidays as they always seem to wear the same favourites at weekends! DS has 3 pairs of trousers, 3 pairs of shorts and about 8 T-shirts (some are getting small and some are a bit big). And 1 shirt and smarter pair of trousers and jogging bottoms and a zip up hoody. He doesn't like long sleeved things or jumpers so that restricts him anway!

DD has more, because she has choices of dress/skirt and top/leggings and top.

biryani · 26/07/2012 13:09

About 8 t-shirts, 5 jeans/ leggings, 3 warm hoodies. 2 coats plus 1 kagoule-type thing. 1 boots, 1 pair trainers, 1 sandals, 1 pumps.

MsOnatopp · 26/07/2012 14:08

Not nearly enough.

4 or 5 pairs of trousers
Same in t-shirts.
Same in hoodies or jumpers.
8 in pants

2kidsintow · 26/07/2012 17:45

Far. Too. Many.
Girls (so they have more as they have trousers AND skirts AND dresses etc)

They each have a chest of drawers with 2 small drawers (one for knickers and one for socks) and 4 wide drawers.

They have
A drawer of pyjamas and swimsuits
A drawer of skirts and short sleeved tops
A drawer of leggings and long sleeved tops
A drawer of school uniform

And then they have dresses and trousers hung up in their wardrobe with cardigans and jackets.

They are spoiled, clothes wise.

And we still manage to not be able to find the right outfit when school want them to be able to turn up in the colour of a particular country etc for various special days.

Hulababy · 26/07/2012 17:50

10y DD has far too many clothes! And she wears uniform for school so not even as if she really needs them. But I am dreadful - I go shopping for myself, I hate shopping for myself and trying stuff on, get distracted and get DD stuff instead!

I do have regular clear outs each season though and we pass on a lot of clothes DD has grown out of (which seems to be so often; why does she have to keep growing!) to a friend's DD.

I wouldn't dare actually count how much of everything she has!

DontEatTheVolesKids · 26/07/2012 17:53

4 complete outfits for each season, plus 2 prs PJs & a few extra pants & socks.
DC have between 10 & 20x more than that that.

E320 · 26/07/2012 17:57

Outer clothing/nightwear: 1 on, 1 off, 1 in the wash.
Underwear and socks: 1 pair per day per week (7 days) plus a couple of spares.
Smart outfits: 1 winter, 1 summer.
Sportswear: 1 complete set of whatever they do.
Add slippers/clogs/indoor shoes and 1 dressinggown.

Also adult rule applies: if you have not worn it for 18 months to 2 years, bin it (give to charity shop).

LynetteScavo · 26/07/2012 17:57

I have similar children.

I work, and therefor haven't got loads of time for washing. (which is why my DC have lots of clothes Blush)

2 pairs shorts

2 pairs jeans

5 t-shirts

5 pairs socks/pants

3 jumpers

1 swimming costume

1 best outfit.

1 coat.

This is the bare minimum, and we actually have much more.

DrowninginDuplo · 26/07/2012 18:30

Mine have
6 t-shirts
1 smart shirt
4 pairs of trousers/jeans
4 pairs of shorts
3 jumpers

Am feeling a little stingy now.

olibeansmummy · 26/07/2012 20:04

Ds has loads and loads thanks to our lovely, lovely neighbour who passes on all her ds's clothes but moved in just after I bought ds's age 2-3 clothes.

He has a small drawer or underwear and socks and a small drawer if pyjamas that he doesn't really like to wear.

Then he has a drawer of long sleeved tips and shirts,
A drawer of t shirts
A drawer of jeans/ trousers and shorts
A drawer of hoodies/ jumpers
An overspill drawer
A plastic box of hoodies/ jumpers
A drawer under our bed of too big clothes

Shock
ClaireRacing · 26/07/2012 20:05

Mine have about 3 seasonal outfits each, excluding school uniform.

foxeeroxee · 26/07/2012 20:23

Mine have far too many and I only realised when I had to iron them all when the elderest 2 went on holiday with gps last week.Angry
Dd is 5 and has more skirts, dresses, leggings, tshirts and shoes than you can shake a shitty stick at.
Ds1 is 3 and I counted over 30 tshirts!!! Wtf does he need that many?! Yet he does wear them all regulaly (sp?) and has odd stuff for 'best'.
Ds2 is 6months so at the moment he is living in babygros and joggers/ds1's hand downs.

Inyourhippyhat · 26/07/2012 20:37

DD (17) has lots. She has a p/t job so buys a lot herself. I get a lot of her cast-offs (well, tops....3 DC have increased my lower circumference a little)

thebody · 26/07/2012 21:20

Far far far too many, but 2 of my kids are teenage girls!!!
