to judge parents whose children have sunburn?

StrandedBear · 26/07/2012 10:17

Seriously there is no need for children (or adults for that matter) to get burnt. It is fairly easy actually, suncream, cover up, stay in the shade between 11 and 3! So when I see a small child with bright red shoulders I want to shake the parents. The sun is dangerous! Then again most of these parents resemble over done lobsters themselves.

Is it a lack of education? Or do they actually not care about the possible damage to themselves and their children?

someone told my gran that liquid parrafin was an effective sunscreen. So she slathered me in that. I am surprised she didn't catch me alight with one of her John Player Specials.

You make your gran up for comedy value, don't you goml? Wink

DontEatTheVolesKids · 26/07/2012 16:18

yabu

GetOrfMoiIand · 26/07/2012 16:19

Cheeky beggar, I'm not you Grin

I wish I made her up. She was a bloody nutcase.

I am very pale - and we went to Kenya on holiday and I got covered in parrafin. Trip to A&E when we got back to the UK.

RubyFakeNails · 26/07/2012 16:24

Well having read the thread earlier, I've tried it, I slathered DD2 in suncream and sent her off to the garden.

We only had 2 kinds, and the one is used on her was green Confused think its something my friend left behind once. Against her dark skin, she looked like the shrek princess.

She keeps complaining it smells, is sticky etc.

In weather like this when its only a bit warm, how much/often would you put on. Bearing in mind my children are mixed race and I've only ever seen them burn slightly and that was in the caribbean, I would assume they need less than say a ginger child. I mentioned I only do it in Jamaica, but am deciding to try it here am just a bit Hmm about it all.

I'm pale but I never burn, I just stay the same shade, maybe get a few freckles here and there so I'm a bit inexperienced at it all.

JumpingThroughHoops · 26/07/2012 16:25

liquid paraffin is used in cosmetics and petroleum jelly, its not kerosene Confused

GetOrfMoiIand · 26/07/2012 16:29

Who said it was?

What is your point? Grin I didn't say I was going to fly a plane with it Confused

JumpingThroughHoops · 26/07/2012 16:30

I was a bit worried you thought you might ignite - unless of course she really did use lamp paraffin Gin

GetOrfMoiIand · 26/07/2012 16:33

Knowing her it was lamp parrafin. It was in a plastic bottle which looked like a white spirit bottle. Grin

Anything for thrift.

I have vitiligo which means my skin no longer produces melanin. I burn even when I have factor fifty on, especially on my back and it just isn't practical to stay out of the Sun at peak times.

So judge away at me stranded, I get ignorant comments all the time directed at me and my skin.

I may be a lobster at times but my kids are always covered up. My daughter burnt her face with factor fifty, it dont always work

SaraBellumHertz · 26/07/2012 16:47

I am so pale ad to be virtually translucent, my DH is pale are DC's have little chance of developing a tan. Despite living in a country where the temp rarely dips below 20c and is often double that they also have little chance of burning. Because I take reasonable precautions - its really not difficult

sheepsgomeeping · 26/07/2012 16:54

I take reasonable precautions too and I still bloody burn!

GnabGib · 26/07/2012 17:08

I am very pale with several moles and burn incredibly easily. My mum took it very seriously so always covered me and my brother in sunscreen and kept us out of the sun. We always complained, especially when we were with friends who didn't bother with it. I did burn badly a few times as a child (not my parents' fault- this was day trips with other people and trips abroad where I would just burn straight through factor 50) and it's made me very worried about getting skin cancer when I'm older.

I'm so glad my mum was so careful though, I remember being shocked as a teenager when I went to the beach with a friend- I pulled out some factor 50, she pulled out a bottle of baby oil! If you teach kids how important it is to be safe in the sun, they're much more likely to take it seriously as adults.

Inneedofbrandy · 26/07/2012 17:11

RubyFakeNails Mine are mixrace and I just spray factor 20 nivia on back of their neck and ears and face if we will be out all day or in water. If I forgot though it wouldnt be the end of the world and they have never burnt.
I do make sure they have hats on and drink lots of water though.
When dd dad takes her jamaica I pack suncream for her and it gets used but she still comes home blik.

LookBehindYou · 26/07/2012 17:18

ginabib, my dh is red head with lots of freckles and moles. A couple of years ago he had 3 removed. If you haven't yet done so, I really suggest getting yours checked.

LookBehindYou · 26/07/2012 17:18

GnabGig, gah!

anditwasallyellow · 26/07/2012 17:26

YABABU, ds goes bright red he's not at all burnt but to look at him you'd think he was

squoosh · 26/07/2012 17:29

In water is when lots of people burn. All those reflected rays.

SkivingAgain · 26/07/2012 17:38

I wouldn't be so quick to judge, my DS got sunburned even though he was wearing a t-shirt when swimming in a pool on holiday. He is olive skinned and never burns, was 11 years old at the time so lots of experience of keeping safe in the sun so this was totally unexpected.

GnabGib · 26/07/2012 17:39

Thanks Look I think I'll ask. I have a large one that my mum has always worried about (about the size of a 2p) but didn't know if they removed them if they hadn't changed. Did your DH just want them removed for safety's sake?

paidgofyn · 26/07/2012 17:41

OP do you have time for anything other than judging?

RubyFakeNails · 26/07/2012 17:47

Thanks Gnab I always pack suncream for Jamaica and make them use it despite much protestation, but had never (mainly because DH laughs at me) felt it was necessary here, especially considering they barely even tan in this country. But had a bit of a wobble what with the mn angry mob Grin

And yes they do go a bit dark over there, DS came back in april and looked purple, he was most unimpressed! They're all very dark anyway, most people think that I must be black until they see me and my ghostly skin.

LookBehindYou · 26/07/2012 17:48

He had 3 he wasn't sure about. The consultant removed them all and did biobsies on two of them that looked iffy. They were all fine.
My dad has skin cancer for years and we are all fair skinned so I watch my freckles too and we spend a small fortune on sun cream.
They have a ultraviolet (?) scanner that they run all over your body so they could check the mole your mum doesn't like.

RubyFakeNails · 26/07/2012 17:48

God sorry I only glanced up, my previous post was for InNeedOfBrandy not Gnab.

I've been on the Wine since too early.

Inneedofbrandy · 26/07/2012 18:03

RubyFakeNails I im very slapdash about it and just chase them around park/pool spraying LOL and it never gets rubbed in. Its also the same bottle ive haad for about 4 years. But reading all these threads about tan is sun damage to im now thinking argh should I of been using factor 50 all along.
DD does tan slightly here more noticable in winter where she gets this hollow kind of paleness (really cant explain properly) and looks like she needs sun. My DS stays the same and I used to get lots of comments are you sure his dads not african Hmm

RubyFakeNails · 26/07/2012 18:17

Brandy I think I'll have to sort out some clear stuff, DD looked ridiculous today, I guess if she's going to be in the sun for a long time it makes sense.

I won't have much luck with my teens though, although I imagine their various lotions and potions have SPF in them.

I know exactly the look you're talking about, my friends sons get it and we always say they look only dark around the edges, its sort of a bit flat and does look like they need a good holiday. Your DS sounds lovely, I adore my dcs skin tone.
