to think shops should do something to stop this (but not sure what!)

A friend went to the Next sale last week (one of the items she wanted was some trainers for her son). She was 5th in the queue, infront of her were a couple.

When the doors opened, the couple went into the children's department and basically 'swept' items into the big bags Next had given out to the queue (like Ikea bags). The man went to the boys trainers shelf and put at least 20-25 pairs of trainers/shoes in his bag.

My friend, who was just behind him, asked him if that was fair and if he had a pair of size 10's. He replied, in good accented English (this is relevant later) that she could have them for £10 - (the sale price tag was £5 so she would have ended up paying £15 for them). She, quite rightly, told him to take a hike.

She noticed that the woman was doing the same and had a huge bag of items, both boys and girls and of all ages - she could hardly lift it. My friend estimated that between the 2 of them, they must have had at between 150-200 items of clothes or shoes.

My friend cornered one of the Managers and told him what had happened with the shoes, when he went to talk to the man, he (the man) suddenly seemed not to be able to speak English and there was alot of shrugging. The Manager said this wasnt the first time he had seen this but legally there was nothing he could do.

I assume most of the items will appear on ebay and I dont think anyone would begrudge people buying the odd item to make a profit, but these 2 were taking the piss.

As the title says, AIBU to think shops should have something in place to stop this?

this happens in Lidl, too.

YABU because the solution is for Next to act to prevent the arbitrage that is currently occurring.

i.e. Next is pricing the stuff incorrectly if someone can e-bay it and make a profit. Therefore they should take note and price the stuff a bit higher.

It's actually commercially a really interesting case though. It shows that Joe Public has a better idea of the RRP of X item that the actual retailer.

Some people just don't care.
I was at a hotel buffet once when the lady infront of me virtually took an entire cake! She didn't leave me even one tiny piece.
She knew I was waiting for some cake too and smirked as she past making a smug comment. I did quickly retort "Oh well, I guess I will have to do without then!"

I can't decide whether Next should do something about it or not but I hate greedy behaviour like this. I went to the Next sale a couple of weeks ago (first time ever!) and there were people there with 8 of those IKEA-type bags each, stuffed full of random clothes. Even the staff were a bit Shock Hmm I got what I went for so no skin off my nose but really annoying for people who got up early and then couldn't find what they wanted.

The really savvy people with nerves of steel go back a week later so they get first pick of the returns!

I've also seen restrictions in my local supermarket on how many sale items one customer can buy. Who really needs more than 24 bottles of shower gel at once?!

lunamoon · 26/07/2012 10:53

Yes supermarkets do sometimes put restrictions on.
I remember when I lived near a Netto and they were sellings Mars bars for 9p each. They put a restriction on the amount you could buy. Every single person in the queue had at least one Mars bar in their basket, then like me had thrown in a couple of other items just to try and justify their trip!!

Next told me that some people do that. Then return them all in 2-3 days after they've chosen what they really want. Apparently some people make a day of Next sales doing this, start at the bottom then keep going up. I go to the next sale about 3 days later and get a good selection of returned items.Confused
