To think that if the sign on the bus says.............

"Ring the bell, then remain seated until the bus has stopped" or words to that effect. And rightly so!, the bloody bus driver should wait until his passengers are seated before they pull off.

Yesterday i had the misfortune of having to travel by bus, i had several heavy bags full of box folders, so heavy and awkward.

Downstairs was full

So i go upstairs, and nearly end up on a heap at the bottom of the stairs and also bumping into people as i try and find my seat.

Annoying - that is all

dangerous if mother and baby

And to be fair if you ring the bell but don't get up when you want to get off the bus driver is likely to whizz past your stop.

Lucyellensmum99 · 25/07/2012 09:28

yep - or people tut because they have to wait for you to get off! I always try and sit downstairs if i have bags etc, but DD likes to sit upstairs so i always wait until the bus stops.

YANBU. It is dangerous....I often see elderly people gamely trying to reach a seat before the bus lurches off leaving them spinning in the aisle. I guess the drivers have timetables to keep to but this shouldn't be done at the expense of the safety of passengers.

AKMD · 25/07/2012 09:33

YANBU. Last year I fell over backwards on a bus carrying 18mo DS because of this exact issue. The bus driver didn't so much as glance back to check I was ok but the zillions of school children who I had been glancing sideways at were very nice and picked us both up again Blush They should also wait so that people have time to get off a crowded bus without having to jump up 3 stops in advance.

Paiviaso · 25/07/2012 09:47

I think bus routes would take much, much longer if they had to wait until everyone was seated. And if the bus doesn't have a camera upstairs, how will the driver know if everyone is seated?

I think if you know you are going to have a problem, you could ask the driver to give you a sec before pulling off.

DawnOfTheDee · 25/07/2012 09:54

I see your point Paiviaso but i think it should work both ways. If a bus driver sees someone who is clearly frail or carrying a baby, say, they should wait a few seconds till they're seated or at least not slam on the accelerator doing their best Shumakker impression.

phantomnamechanger · 25/07/2012 09:56

they ARE supposed to wait for people to sit down if they are going upstairs, but the poor sods can't win, people will moan about them taking too long and ruinning late etc

Tee2072 · 25/07/2012 09:56

I love the fact that our timetables say "may be off schedule due to traffic" but make no allowances for what the OP is talking about.

It takes about a minute or less to see that people are secure.

Lucyellensmum99 · 25/07/2012 09:57

Yes, i don't actually blame the drivers as they have a job to do, and are under pressure to get to stops on time, but it IS dangerous. So it should be policy that they wait

I have a mobility problem and agree with you however if you dont stand up then the driver probably isn't going to stop , I do wait until the bus has stopped though they huff and puff bur i dont care, what really gets on my wick is they dont wait till you sit down when you get on I have complained before as i went flying down the bus,

Shodan · 25/07/2012 10:01

My mother had a bad fall and resulting injuries because the driver didn't even bother to wait until she'd moved past him to drive off. Consequently she fell backwards into the doors, sort of crumpled into the steps area. If I ever go on a bus with her now I make sure she goes ahead of me so she can be safely seated.

So it's a YANBU from me- they should definitely wait and the time allowed for in the timetabling.

Mrsjay · 25/07/2012 10:02

oh shodan did you complain was your mum ok that is shocking,

twofurryones · 25/07/2012 10:03

YANBU it is a pet peeve of mine, I know there are some nice ones out there, but there seems to be a high proportion of inconsiderate arses working as bus drivers.

Lucyellensmum99 · 25/07/2012 10:06

I have to say that the bus drivers round here, whilst improved recently, were just awful, most of them looked like they hadn't had a wash for a month and were beying rude. They are better now though

beying = beyond - i can't even blame auto correct! just my dyslexic fingers

I don't drive so catch the bus daily. I used to use a national service but was sick of being flung around with a newborn baby so switched to the local company. I've been doing a school run with a 4/5yo and a baby in a sling since September. Without fail, every single driver waits until we're seated, offers to help, has held ds for me while I've been struggling with dd's craft mountain etc etc. And just last week the driver stopped at a roadside fruit sale and bought some fruit and gave dd and ds a punnet of strawberries and a punnet of raspberries. I live in fear of it closing down and having to go back to the monstrous double deckers and their unrealistic timings.

Move here, it's brilliant.

Shodan · 25/07/2012 12:59

Yes Mrsjay we did complain- as did several of the people on the bus who witnessed it! It took a long time to be resolved (months and months) but the bus company finally capitulated and mum was compensated. But she did break a rib so that was quite a long time of pain for her.

Shockingly the company did try to deny culpability for a while-thank God for the kind hearted passengers who wll gave statements!

YANBU at all a few weeks ago my MIL was getting on the bus holding my 3 year olds hand (I had a buggy behind her). The driver pulled of really suddenly and quickly while we we still getting to the seats and my MIL fell over on top of my dd. Its dangerous the way they shoot off.
