i watch alot of programmes about very obese people. They can't move or take care of themselves. So why do the people who are supposed to be looking after them continue to give them foods so high in fats and sugars.

Sconesconescone I'm sorry about your mother.Sad

I think, in the end, we are all human, with the faults and foibles that come with that.

Basically if you smoke, drink in excess or eat too much you don't really love yourself, or surely you wouldn't inflict this on your body.

But I can remember years ago people complaining of breathlessness - and they smoked 60 a day, my thought was how on earth do you find time to smoke 60 a day? How little exercise must you take to get to 30+ stone.

It's incomprehensible really. Just get up and walk about for half an hour a couple of times a day. I mean I'm not asking you to take up some long term fitness programme at the gym, just walk about sometimes instead of sitting.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/07/2012 18:57

im sure many obese people "walk about sometimes" Hmm

Dawndonna · 25/07/2012 19:11

I know that, I can't remember the technical term for what I have. It's genetic. Even when I'm a size ten, my wrists and elbows are strange and look swollen. Well, only on the left arm at the moment, but that will change. If you saw a photograph of my wrists, it would look like that of a size 20 woman. I'm not.

LookBehindYou · 25/07/2012 19:12

Is it painful Dawndonna?

waterlego6064 · 25/07/2012 19:14

That sounds unpleasant Dawndonna, must be very difficult.

Mrbojangles1 · 25/07/2012 19:16

These people who are so overweight they have to have the side of their house knocked down to get them out are usually in dysfunctional familes

But i have always wondered how did that person get so fat they cant even roll over and i watched one program were the CARER was getting the takeway frim the guy at the front door and bring it to the oerson their supposed to be caring for Shock

in my view a paid carer from the council should only be providing healthy food and if they want the junk they should get it themselfs

Their was a parent at my sons school who was on a mobile scooter because she was so overweight very sad often this is a reguLar site at theme parks and the joke is their classed as disabled their are people who are really ill people who have cancer ect who cant get classed as disabled

"Just noticed an earlier post about anorexics. I don't think they can legally force-feed anorexics without a court judgement, unless the patient has been sectioned."

yup this is true, they are force fed under section (work in a hospital)
but often their families still sneak them in slimming pills and laxatives Shock
just like obese people's family's often come in armed with take aways and bottles of coke
I just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT, If someone I loved was a drug addict I wouldn't buy their drugs!

another thing I don't understand is that when anorexic's families are sneaking them in slimming pills etc, the anorexic patient get's a "special" one to one member of staff to supervise them at all times, but I've never seen that happen with obese patients in with life threatening obesity related complications? why the difference? why are the ones killing themselves with food never sectioned and specialed when the ones killing themselves with lack of food are? I don't understand the difference!

Mrbojangles1 · 25/07/2012 19:18

Dawndonna please do not bring gernetics into this

Although their will be some people who it is down to tis they will be very few and far between most people just eat to much and move to little

LookBehindYou · 25/07/2012 19:20

Mrbojangles1, did you read Dawndonna's post? If it's genetics for her, it's genetics.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/07/2012 19:31

"Their was a parent at my sons school who was on a mobile scooter because she was so overweight"

Not necessarily, if she has a disability causing her to be immobile it is surprisingly easy to gain weight as you burn very few calories. So maybe you are a bit hasty being so holier than thou.

Krumbum · 25/07/2012 19:48

Greatauntieirene. It can very painful for some people to exercise. Weight can hurt your joints making even walking unbearable. I have plantar fasciitis in my feet. which I had even before I gained weight which makes excercise very painful.
Also weight is very little to do with exercise and almost entirely about diet. To burn off substantial amounts of calories enough to lose weight you would be having to do hours of intense exercise everyday.
What you eat means losing or gaining weight. Exercise has lots of other benefits and tones you but diet is the key.

It's frustrating, but no, there's no pain. Apparently it may limit my mobility when I'm older, as in movement of wrists and elbows, but that's all. If it limits it severely then there are treatments available.

MrBojangles the point I was trying to make was that in some cases it is genetic. I didn't say all, by any stretch. I have a rare condition, I know it's rare, but I don't like being judged which is why I said something.

Shagmundfreud · 25/07/2012 20:48

FIL is 18 stone, incontinent and with extremely limited mobility because of a stroke a few years ago.

He doesn't eat 'crap' - he eats fruit, veg, fish, meat. He just eats way, way, way too much of it. Mahoosive portions. Which MIL (a retired nurse) makes for him.

She gives him these portions because he asks for them. He is nearly 80, senile and lives to eat. If you give him a small portion he'll pester and pester for more. She also has no sense of what a normal portion is and has been obese herself her whole life. SIL is morbidly obese. Nieces and nephew are very, very fat (not all of them).

They have a decades long problem with food as a family. It's not eating crap in their case. They are all good cooks and make lovely food. They just don't know when or how to stop eating.

McHappyPants2012 · 25/07/2012 21:39

i kind of get it, they give in to make the person they love happy.
