To think it doesn't matter what type of colouring book a child wants as long as they are happy

My Ds is way too young for colouring books but I'd dragged him into town to buy a present for my cousin who's 5. As I was looking I saw this little girl pick up a spiderman colouring book and ask her mum if she could have it. Her mum said spiderman is for boys you can have a princess one. The girl didn't want the princess colouring book as the spiderman one was better.

The poor girl didn't get a colouring book in the end as she wouldn't accept the princess one Sad

AIBU to think that it doesn't matter what type of colouring book a child wants as long as they are happy? If Ds wanted a princess one he'd get one, same as if he wanted a spiderman one

DD would have chosen the Spiderman too.

MIL has made it plain that boys are better Angry

YANBU my dd would have chosen a thomas the tank book over any princessy one some people are just really arsey about this sort of stuff it is sad for the children, I work with little children 4 and under, and we had dressing up stuff out mum of a 3 yr old boy said he can dress up in anything but the fairy costume it is poofy Hmm

YANBU

Reminds me of dd2s last day at pre school before they broke up. It was fancy dress party and one little girl arrived wearing a batman dress up. She looked really sweet and her mum just said, is it obvious she's got big brothers and laughed!! I just replied that if that's how it works, it's not biding well for ds who has 2 big sisters Grin

I don't see a problem with DCs having whichever colouring books they want!

My DS has a big sister and his current favourite thing is to strip naked, put on her dress up tiara and run in circles trilling "I is an p'incess! Look! I is sparkleeeeeeee!".

Fuck knows what gender haters would make if him. Destined to be gay, obvs.

I have ds and superhero outfits aplenty - I have wrongly assumed that visiting little girls would have no interest in these, but have been proved very wrong by the girls themselves, as they dive into superman/batman cossies!

CecilyP I didn't say it would turn her into a man just that it is annoying that the choice is pink princess pony parties or male heroes. A boy can aspire to be a hero, doctor, mechanic, pilot, race care driver, and on and on. A girl can aspire to be a Hispanic detective girl (thank goodness for Dora) or a princess. There aren't any great woman heroes. I have my fingers crossed for Brave. Even every small child's favourite, Elmo, is male.

ds looks really cute in his pink t shirt, cerise, dressing up skirt and his 2 bobbles.
