To think Dyson is a crock of shit and if we buy a vacuum cleaner it should actually clean?!

ARGH!!! I had a tech teacher at school about ten years ago who raved about Dyson. I had the misfortune to believe her so when our vacuum cleaner packed up not long after we moved in together, I persuaded DP to buy a Dyson City Vacuum Cleaner as we live in a small flat and have no DCs or pets... it should have been able to cope perfectly.

My student Henry Hoover, which had survived god-knows-how-many undergrads before me and came with the house was actually better than this piece of junk.

I am not even halfway through hoovering and I have already had to pick threads off the floor (one small bathroom, one hallway) because I might as well just be waving my hand over the carpet for all the suction this machine has. Last time I hoovered (have been away, so maybe a month ago) I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it thoroughly, thinking that might be the problem. It's not. It's still shit and as DP bought it over eBay a year ago we just have to suck it up or not.

Every time I get the Dyson out I spend the time giving myself back ache and furiously composing a letter to James Dyson in my head. I cannot wait until it breaks and I can give up on Dyson for ever. What makes it even worse is that our LLs have cream carpets so every single speck of hair, thread or dirt shows. I'm going to be at this for the rest of the afternoon picking at the carpet by hand...

I'm going to throw a curve ball in here and suggest it is the type of carpet you use it on.

My Hetty was alright on my last carpet, but having moved last week to a new flat with a slightly firmer carpet (a sort of woven pattern that's hard to describe) my Hetty is the biz! Sucks up everything on the first glance over it.

My parents Dyson is v good and I have used Dysons on fluffly carpets that other vacuum cleaners were crap at. Maybe that's why they are so good with pet hair?

DappyHays · 25/07/2012 12:12

I have a bosch cat and dog and a Hetty, that was bought when my bosch had a fault and I desperately needed to vacuum before visitors. The bosch fault was something really minor that I fixed myself.

Both are good vacuums with the bosch pipping the Hetty to the post for ease of use and better head/handle parts.

DappyHays · 25/07/2012 12:12

PS can't comment on the Dyson but have heard many bad reports about them plus they look crap

DappyHays · 25/07/2012 12:13

Sorry I meant Miele Cat and Dog, bosch was my vacuum before that one. I'm a dozy cow

StrandedBear · 25/07/2012 12:18

Buy a Miele or a Hoover much much better than Dyson

Which Sebo do you have?? I am now thinking of getting one. Hardwood floors downstairs and carpets upstairs. If that helps.
(Hanging out on MN is ruinous.)

i seem to have endless misfortune with hoovers (not the brand!). had a dyson and it was useless and SO heavy and I was continually cleaning the filter and it didn't suck well. took it to the tip. then had an electrolux dog and cat one which was fine until about six months in the motor started overheating after about 2 mins and it would cut off. to the tip. Then i went for a quite expensive Vax which was OK but was the heaviest thing I have ever lifted, i struggled to lift it up the stairs (and I do a lot of sport /weights). It packed up after 18mths. So that was about 3 hoovers in 3 years.

They were all bagless. So I went and go myself a bagged hoover (Hoover PurePower PU2110 - £70 brand new) and some extra bags from Ebay - very cheap and I've had it two years and it is honestly the best hoover ever.

We need to go back to bagged hoovers.

IHeartKingThistle · 25/07/2012 13:14

It says automatic X4 Pet on it. It's black if that helps!

CharminglyOdd · 25/07/2012 14:43

Okay I thought I would update, having put everything back together.

I was being slightly U: cleaning the filters has made a difference. I no longer feel like I'm wasting my time and that hoovering one room will take forever. It picked up all the residue soil from a plant that tipped over yesterday whereas after my birthday party it didn't touch the confetti I'd put out for the children (had to pick it up by hand).

However I would never buy a Dyson again. I have had to pick up nine little balls of hair (mine, we have no pets) that the Dyson just pulled into a ball then refused to suck up in a medium-sized living room. Also three pieces of thread that it also balled then left on the floor. Partly this may be due to our carpet (as someone mentioned upthread), which is thick, closely-woven and the bane of my life (there are marks left over from furniture that was moved years ago and indents take about two months to bounce back). OTOH when I buy something expensive and meant to be 'very good'/'the best' I would expect it to work despite little setbacks... we can't be the only people with thick carpet so I would expect a commercially manufactured vacuum cleaner to handle it.

I think this thread has had the most replies of anything I've started in two years on MN... can't believe it's about bloody vacuum cleaners! Grin

dysons are bad with long strands, hair and thread. i didn't even realise there were bits of thread in my house until a dyson faile dto pick them up.

why is that?

Dawndonna · 26/07/2012 14:55

I quite liked my dyson, but it didn't seem to be enough for asthmatic daughter, so I bought a miele. I will never, ever buy a dyson again.

Bingdweller · 26/07/2012 15:08

Sebo all the way! Hate Dyson, barely have an undamaged skirting board left they are so clumsy.

Sebo bags & filters are easy to change - the lime air freshener cartridges that you can pop in the bag smell lovely too!

MsOnatopp · 26/07/2012 15:11

Not surprised you got a crap one if you bought it second hand from ebay if I am honest.

Both of the Dysons I have had (animal) have been amazing.

j3ssycat · 26/07/2012 15:24

Miele all the way with a dog that sheds continually.

MonkeyRisotto · 26/07/2012 16:40

I'm still using my XW's Dyson that's about 12 years old, and it is still going strong. No experience of Miele or Henrys but I'm still impressed with it, suction still seems very powerful compared with standard uprights.

DontEatTheVolesKids · 26/07/2012 17:12

We have cats, cleaner has furrier cat & a dog.
Cleaner says my DC07 trumps her Miele Cat + Dog & she tries not to think about the bag cost.

kiteman · 16/06/2016 14:10

I totally agree with your comments about dyson cleaners
I;m not a mum but I was comparing prices on internet just for curiosity.and typed in dyson crap cleaners and saw your site , I thought i was the only one not brainwashed by smarmey, mr dyson .
we have owned dysons and still own one now [ sorry ]
I hate ours it cost my dear mum in law a lot of money at the time but couldn't use it they are far to complicated ,resembling a childs transformer toy
I work as a domestic in our local hospital, we use Sebo bs 36 comfort . vacuums, they are fantastic bagged machines and are quality, they have to be . that's why we don't use dyson they wont tell you that on the adverts . if the filter blocks they are dead.

FireTruckOhFireTruck · 16/06/2016 15:57

Zombie thread!

Planty18 · 16/06/2016 16:05

My dyson is pants and I curse myself for replacing my amazing Miele with it every time I vacuum. Considering selling to buy the old one again Hmm

TheCuriousOwl · 16/06/2016 16:14

Miele cat and dog. I don't have a cat or a dog but I do have long hair and my old housemates used to dye their hair which makes it fall out more... my vacuum needs to cope with picking up all the hair from everywhere! It's a bit heavy but aside from that it's great.

Mum's got the same one and she has a long haired cat so needs to vacuum a lot...

mirime · 16/06/2016 16:20

I sort of inherited a Dyson and it's marvellous. Better than the Electrolux we had before, and no point even comparing it to the cheapy Asda one we had before that which broke within a couple of months.

We have three cats and the Dyson makes short work of the cat hair. With the Electrolux, despite it being sold as good for pet owners I used to have to crawl about with a clothes brush to get the cat hair up.
