I have not been to a Library for about 6 years. I am not Someone who reads daily, weekly or monthly.

I was recommended a couple of books by a friend of mine (American Psycho and The story of O, just incase You are interested :) )

Anyhow, I walked into the Library and there was no one in there except the lady behind the counter, She seen me come in but she was on the phone, I wandered overe to 'where I thought I should be looking' and stood looking for what I wanted for about 6/7 minutes.
In all honesty I was hoping the lady would get off the phone and come and help me but instead I had to stand and listen to her talking about alsorts of random stuff.

In the end I just left without any communication or the book I wanted to read.
Is this normal behaviour for a librarian or am I being unreasonable thinking this was wrong?

hehe,is it now
didn't know that
do know

LineRunner · 23/07/2012 19:45

I actually read the Story of O as a teenager and it was sooo slooooow. Like Edgar Allen Poe had been put on the bromide.

FamiliesShareGerms · 23/07/2012 19:48

Well, our library had American Psycho on it's featured book stand last week, so you'd have found that no problem. Not sure about the Story of O, though.

Love libraries. Only place you can go and not be hassled every two minutes by staff who don't really care but have been told to engage their customers...

footphobic · 23/07/2012 19:50

Our library is pretty good for a small rural town and the librarians are pleasant and generally bend over backwards to help, when you go and ask Wink

I've always used it, it's an essential facility, use it or lose it and have encouraged the dcs since tiny. Loads of stuff goes on in libraries, especially for children. My dcs have made use of the free sunday craft clubs, and the summer hols reading challenges. DD1 is a very big reader and is always in there, she is also doing her Duke of Ed silver volunteering there this summer.

I do all my reserving online, try browsing your county library website and order books to your local library to pick up.

AngelWreakinHavoc · 23/07/2012 19:50

ok ok I'm bliddy rubbish lol.
I did leave schol at 13 onebigwish but that is a different thread altogether ;)
I honestly didnt meant to sound stupid, I thank You all for your replies.

TheMonster · 23/07/2012 19:52

Please go back and give the library another go.

scottishmummy · 23/07/2012 19:53

50sog the wank book for Boden readers, not a dry pant in the house
sells loads
but so does no don't do it daddy mis lit

Angelico · 23/07/2012 19:57

Haven't read 50 shades but I'm more disturbed that someone recommended American Psycho as some kind of 'fun mummy porn' Confused It's one of the few books I was literally unable to finish - horrible, horrible book.

LineRunner · 23/07/2012 19:57

You don't sound at all stupid, OP, you sound a bit shy.

jollyrancher · 23/07/2012 20:01

Librarians aren't really supposed to bother the browsers too much.

Mine has a helpful massive display of pornography atm, under the banner "What to read after 50 shg"

Disturbingly the banner was written in bubble writing, each letter a different colour, such as might be produced by a 10 yo.

Black lace pushed their pineapples rather than pulled them ds loves Agadoo I have to sing it when he gets grumpy in the car!
And fiction does technically have a Dewey number ( 813 for American, 823 for British) but pretty much every library ignores that!
On the subject of the OP - go and ask, there's nothing librarians like more than chatting about books :o

SlimJimBra · 23/07/2012 20:11

Ugh yes "floorwalking"

Another person shocked at who would recommend American Psycho as a follow up to 50 Shades of Shite... the sex is incredibly graphic and there is a lot of brutal sexual violence towards women.
Not sure you would find O in the library but it is well worth the read, but equally disturbing in a different way.

Alwaysme123 · 23/07/2012 20:13

my local library is great. please dont be put off, next time you go just ask for a bit of help.. does the library have a computerised reference system which you can use, i find tht helpful.
iv been reading james patterson recently, any crime thriller books really.
i havnt read 50 shades of grey yet.

LineRunner · 23/07/2012 20:14

I don't know whether to be proud or ashamed that I misquoted a Black Lace song.

SlimJimBra · 23/07/2012 20:16

:o linerunner I should be ashamed that I went onto YouTube to learn the proper lyrics so I could sing more than just the chorus to ds!

SlimJimBra · 23/07/2012 20:19

I don't mid floorwalking in principle, it's just when you end up looking lost yourself that it can be embarrassing. Mind you I've spent the last few days signing kids up to the summer reading scheme and that's bmores in - the kids are generally happy to stop and chat to me :)

SlimJimBra · 23/07/2012 20:21

Bmores in = been more fun

motherinferior · 23/07/2012 20:22

I use our library regularly. I reserve a lot of books online too. I would be very taken aback if a librarian came to give me a hand.

thelennox · 23/07/2012 20:27

You will be in for a big shock with American psycho. I still have horrible flashbacks to reading that book.
Shudder Shock

Sossiges · 23/07/2012 20:27

YABVU posting in AIBU then saying "don't flame me." wtf?!
Smile
Our library is lovely, the staff are v chatty and nice to dd when she goes in to wreak havoc get some books
If I were looking for those books I would probably get them on ebay where no-one would recognise me

SlimJimBra · 23/07/2012 20:29

Just checked my library's catalogue online (yes we just can't help ourselves when it come to trying to find books for people) and we have 4 copies of American psycho and a cd book too. We have a listing for the story of O but no copies, suggesting we did have it once but it's gone AWOL (nicked or borrowed and never returned)
