to think this is cheeky?

I freecycled lots of things over the past week in a massive declutter. Most of it went to really good homes (I think!) and pleasant people. One woman wanted a few pieces which was fine but she came around this morning and said 'Do ya mind if I sell some things on?' AIBU to think this is cheeky?

There was a young girl who wanted some of this stuff too to do up her first home but the first woman beat her too it by messaging me first. I wish it had gone to the 2nd girl.
I was so gobsmacked I still gave her the stuff. I love freecycle for those pieces I can't get to a charity shop (furniture mainly) but this has made me re think.
I don't think I'd mind so much if she'd a bit more pleasant about it!

Who gives a toss where it goes as long as it is away from me is my moto!

At least the stuff isn't cluttering up your house or a landfill

Yanbu- the idea is it goes to the needy, not for people to make a financial profit. I'm surprised she asked your permission though- I think lots of people just sell these things on anyway. It spoils the spirit of the scheme.

"I can't be doing with people who want their unwanted gubbins to go to a "good home". Most of the time its saving you the time and money in going to a dump, its not about doling out your stuff to whoever is most worthy.
Seems to be a common thought, but really, get over it. It's preciousness."

Couldnt agree more - turned a friend onto it - they sat in traffic and took two hours to get to a house to pick up - supposdely a bed side table possible to paint -turned out to be a 1970's vile commode. they were too shy to say they wouldnt take it - and ended up going straight to the tip to dump rubbish for strangers

next time they were suposed to get an awing - that was in bad state but could be salvalged.

again was a 90% burnt pice of rubbish plastic...that again 0 they went straight to tip with - they didnt bother after that!

I have got some INCREDIBLE stuff off freecyle, and have also given fab stuff away....

along the way I have met nasty/rude and wonderful, generous people....

you cant be precious about it!

also even if people are selling it - so what, yes its a shame they arnt putting back into the system, however it will still be saving stuff from the tip.

For the needy?

I thought it was to simply pass stuff on for free and all the great things that come from that? Saving money, saving landfill etc..saving some people the bother of going to the tip themselves.

I've got this stuff in my house, not sure anyone would buy it but seems a shame to throw it away >

-----> Freecycle. Thats what its for.

So what if you like that feeling, the warm glow of fake altruism? If you want to feel benevolent give something to charity, instead of trying to line up those you feel worthy enough to take the crap you want rid of off your hands.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 23/07/2012 16:05

That's a very vitriolic-sounding post for no real reason, Penis. And I'm not sure why you think it's 'fake' altruism.

Still, never mind, eh.

PenisVanLesbian · 23/07/2012 16:16

I dont think it remotely vitriolic. And yes it is obviously fake altruism, since the main benefit is to yourself, and then you wznt another benefit of enjoying your largesse.

I have a lovely settee that I don't want but no charity will take it because they are too picky (Health & Safety concerns). It is older than most so has no fire safety labels. I have no transport to take it to the tip and no one will buy it. I will not pay the £25 the Council wants to take it away so I still have it. I suppose I will have to try the Freecycle route one day.

I forgot. I had an old Hotpoint working freezer and its instructions. Charities would not take it except for British Heart Foundation. They will take electrical goods. They also receive gift aid income. I was so pleased that a working domestic applicance went to a new home and not the tip.

I think you have a chip on your shoulder about it, for some reason I can't fathom.

I could launch into stories of items that I and people I know have Freecycled to the obvious and clearly expressed benefit of others, but ...

I can't really be arsed.
