..need to go on the wall, not just on a table?
I don't think they can work as well at waist-height, but am having trouble explaining this to dh.

Update - visited PIL today for first time since I started the thread. Waited till FIL had gone out, then told MIL I'd 'just get the smoke alarms up to stop them cluttering the tables". I produced the (hopefully) strong adhesive pads I brought with me, and jumped on a chair. There are now two alarms up!
A small victory for a normal person, a massive victory for me!
Thank you to everyone who posted their opinions/advice. Thanks

Did you leave before FIL came back?

Grin He hadn't noticed when we left! As long as his smoking doesn't set it off, I doubt he'll ever notice tbh.

Please please please get them on the ceiling! At least one On each Level of the house. The reason people are told to keep low incase of fire is that the smoke fills from the top of a room. The amount of people I've had to tell not to take batteries out/ensure they are fitted properly is scary as are the fatalities that I've unfortunately had to deal with. A properly fitted and regularly tested smoke detector saves lives.

Apologies, should read whole thread before posting! Glad they are up!

Well done OP, sometimes it isn't people being intentionally difficult, it's just inertia and 'I'll get around to it'

My dad is a fire fighter and as a teen thought all his 'plans' and smoke alarms were ott, but then I grew up and realised how scary his job must be. Dealing with houses with and without alarms.
There isn't way in hell I would ever not have smoke alarms, were currently house hunting and its one of the first things I look at so I know if I need to factor in the cost of new alarms.

Glad on the whole thread there's only been one poster who thought IWBU. Even my dh had been influenced by their 'it'll never happen' attitude, and had started telling me I had an obsession etc Hmm But now I feel I can actually let their grandchild stay overnight, surely everyone's a winner?!

And what about when you travel? Does your accommodation have a working smoke or CO alarm?
