I'll try and make this as short as poss but ask me questions if you need to.

Just got my £119 back from a national DIY store.

We bought a complete kitchen and the integral dishwasher (value £300+) failed completely 3months after the 1year warranty.

I was given the nod about the Sale of Goods Act and told to look on The One Show website for more details and a framework letter.

I sent off the letter to the DIY store and got a phonecall from dept. manager saying they weren't liable as the warrenty was over. I told him to forward the letter to head office as he obviously wasn't up to scratch on his legal obligations.

A week later he rang back saying get the manufacterer out and if it was deemed to be a fault with the dishwasher rather than misuse they'll pay up. The engineer came out and it turned out to be a problem with the internal computer. We paid and sent the receipt with a copy of our original letter.

We received our cheque for £119 today.

I refuse to take out product insurance as The Sale of Goods Act should cover everything within reason.

has anyone else used The Sale of Goods Act?

Yes.

Had a faulty pressure washer from Halfords. Used it once and it didn't work. They wanted to repair it, I used the sale of Goods Act to get a full refund.

An ex-boyfriend bought a car, once he drove it home he discovered the tappets were knackered (whatever they are), garage wanted to deny all responsibility so I used the Sale of Goods Act on that one too.

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 18:58

Yes,quote it a lot!

AgentProvocateur · 21/07/2012 18:58

I don't understand - how else would you get money back if the item is faulty? Hmm

olimpia · 21/07/2012 19:00

Was it a kenwood dishwasher by any chance?

Lonelylou · 21/07/2012 19:12

AP - the DIY store said it was the manufacturer I had to deal with but as THEIR warranty had run out I didn't have a claim from them. I did as my contract was with the store and not the manufacturer.

Oli - It wasn't a Kenwood. Not sure if it would be fair to name and shame here Hmm

Doesn't matter lonely. Just didn't get it why it wouldn't be ok to mention a brand you or I didn't get on with on a forum Hmm That's all.

Lonelylou · 21/07/2012 19:35

Kim Grin I said within reason...he seems one year over the date.

Olimpia I didn't think it necessary to name the manufacturer as my point was about the DIY store. I don't think it's useful to name the DIY store as The Sale of Goods Act would cover anywhere.

I don't wish to be unreasonable.

Kim, you've made me think...I wonder if this would work with my 3 year old cat Hmm. She was advertised as 'fluffy' and 'purrrrrrfect' and turned out to be neither.

I've tried to use it re: some shutters we had made for a bay window. To cut a long story short, although we have had a County Court Judgment issued against the business we bought them from, we are still hundred of pounds out of pocket Angry.

SE13Mummy · 25/07/2012 01:29

Should have said, the company haven't taken the judgment seriously/have ignored it so we've not received a single penny from them Sad.

SophySinclair · 25/07/2012 09:50

Actually, it would be helpful to name the company as I'm buying a dishwasher this weekend and I'll know which one to avoid

AgentProvocateur · 25/07/2012 16:10

Don't know what company the OP used, but my dishwasher advice would be avoid indeshit. Wink

Lonelylou · 25/07/2012 17:07

It rhymes with Bandy sophySinclair Wink

I too am buying a dishwasher. I'm replacing my slimline Beko with a bigger one. Probably Beko. It's been great.

Furball · 25/07/2012 17:37

Gosh this senario happened with me about 5 years ago. the store didn't want to know and the manufacturer said it was 2 months out of the one year warranty, so tough (I did speak to them more than several times and they were really not bothered, rules is rules)

I wasn't happy obviously but bit the bullet and bought a new dishwasher from elsewhere. and have slagged off A,EG ever since. disgusting customer service, couldn't even offer me a discount on a new machine

So good on you lonelylou - just shows it was worth it

Boggler · 25/07/2012 17:44

Well done lonelylou an excellent result :-)

Lonelylou · 25/07/2012 17:47

That's why I'm wanting to spread the word Furball. PLEASE tell all your friends. Smile

I used SOGA after my TV went bang 2 years after we bought it. We got an engineer to say it was beyond repair, so we got vouchers towards a new one.
