To not want to cook the chicken

urbanproserpine · 21/07/2012 18:46

I am veggie (the only one in household). I cook meat for the DPs but don't do carving or joints of meat. DP does that on weekends.

Last weekend DP bought a chicken. It went out of date on Thursday. DP has been working v late all week and is away this weekend. solo parenting three small DCs has worn me down. Yesterday was last day of term and general mayhem, also too late to cook chicken when we got home. Today I had to get them out of the house, and got home at 5.30pm. Have I cooked the chicken? Nope.

Chicken is hanging over me waving in a guilt inducing way.

I do not want to cook the chicken, I do not want to cut the chicken up. I do not want to persuade my children to eat the chicken.

I have given them pasta.

Yes. It's dead now and I think the least you can do is cook it so someone can benefit from it dying.

Jux · 21/07/2012 18:49

Nope, you're not. Unless it's the only means you have of feeding them.

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 18:49

That's a lot harsher than typed out than I mean it to sound but you get my drift.

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 18:50

Ds would object if I put tights on him Wink

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 18:50

Ha ha ha ha WRONG thread!

IHeartKingThistle · 21/07/2012 18:50

Um, it went out of date on Thursday? It should be in the bin!

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 18:51

It'll be fine if it's cooked today Hmm

Noqontrol · 21/07/2012 18:51

Is it still safe to eat?

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 21/07/2012 18:51

well its now saturday so I would throw it away (if it smells at all off, but i'm guessing that you don't want to sniff it to find out).

Why not stick it in the oven right now? It will be done by 8:30. All you need to do is stick it in the oven - you don't need to bother with seasoning or basting, maybe sprinkle some salt on to make the skin crispy - it will take you a minute tops.

msrantsalot · 21/07/2012 18:51

dont let anyone eat out of date chicken. Bin it now!!

redwhiteandblueeyedsusan · 21/07/2012 18:51

no, dpshould have thought about when he could cook the damn thing before he bought it.

littlemissbroody26 · 21/07/2012 18:51

yanbu, the kids are fed, the chicken is dead either way, just bin it and forget about it :)

TheSkiingGardener · 21/07/2012 18:52

It's out of date. Unfortunately it's bin time.

RadioRentalMum · 21/07/2012 18:53

I wouldn't mess with poultry, it went out of date on Thurs??? Shock. You've probably saved yourself a job cleaning up vomit! Grin

urbanproserpine · 21/07/2012 18:53

Chicken will be rotten and likely to give you food poisoning.

DP should have thought his purchase through - when did he intend to deal with the food he insists on having?

Fwiw, dp doesn't eat pork. Therefore i get lamb, beef, venison or vege sausages. And don't put bacon in carbonara. If I'm out, I'll choose pork but out of courtesy and respect it rarely enters the house. If i bought ham, and dp was to be doing all meal prep until after the expiry date, i would eat cheese sandwiches!

IHeartKingThistle · 21/07/2012 19:01

Can't believe you Hmmd me for saying I would throw away out of date chicken valium! Grin

I'd risk it for many things, but not chicken!

valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 19:03

I can't believe people would chuck what is probably a perfectly good chook away without sniffing it first. What do you think people used to do before dates were stamped on foods? Sniff it - it's easy to tell if meat is off.

PurplePidjin · 21/07/2012 19:09

I wouldn't expect a vegetarian to get that close to a raw chicken, valium, that's why. My in laws are veggie and wouldn't have a clue how to tell!

I use my judgement. Because I'm familiar with what to expect.

littlemissbroody26 · 21/07/2012 19:12

Those who are saying she should sniff it or risk it to avoid throwing away food do you never throw away food because you havn't got round to eating it? I eat meat but I grew up a vegiterian so I don't really cook meat, I wouldn't know what good chicken and bad chicken smelt like.

urbanproserpine · 21/07/2012 19:12

Thank you. I am clueless and wouldn't even know if it was cooked. I have been veggie since nine years old and chicken is the least of the meats I would eat if I jumped ship. guilt of course is pervading me because if it died it should have been for a reason. Now I'm feeling both more guilty and relieved as it's too late Wink

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 21/07/2012 19:13

You really would know what bad meat smells like Grin

littlemissbroody26 · 21/07/2012 19:16

if you feel really bad could you cook it and take it round to a neighbours cat or something?

ErikNorseman · 21/07/2012 19:16

I can't believe you cook meat! If DH messed up his meat buying/cooking he would never ask me to cook it, he knows the most I will do is put it in the freezer for him!

2rebecca · 21/07/2012 19:18

I think you need to be clear to your husband that you are vegetarian and if he wants chicken he cooks it. Chickens are easy to cook.
I don't cook any food I don't eat. If husband or kids fancy something I don't eat they are welcome to buy and cook it themselves.
