to not get the big deal about cutting babies hair

DS 5 mo got his first hair cut a few days ago and i've been really surprised by my 'mum' friends reactions mostly it's been 'oh i couldn't bear to cut off xxx curls' 'did you get teary?' and 'you should have just let it grow' MIL looked like she was going to cry Confused

He was born with loads of hair it mostly fell out at the sides and the back then started to grow in the result being a baby mohawk not in a cute way in a in his eyes or a comb over way and he still had his birth hair at the neck grown down to his tshirt so when the hairdresser came to do my hair i got her to cut his he looks very smart now i think it's much cuter.

I really don't see the big deal am i alone in havin no sentiment for his hair?

(i did keep the curls)

Nope, I didn't even keep the hair from DS's first haircut (although I suspect that MIL secreted some away).

MIL would love me to let his hair grow - she's convinced it would be ringlets, but I keep it down to a grade 4 (he's a messy child, and I really don't think it's curly at all)

Mind you, he was nearly 18 months before he had enough hair to cut anyway, so perhaps I'm just used to him with short hair.

Sirzy · 20/07/2012 10:42

Im with you, can't get upset over a hair cut!

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 20/07/2012 10:45

DS has long hair and has done for years (he's 10) but when he was younger I did used to keep it shorter as he was a messy eater etc.

I didn't cry at his first hair cut but I did keep one of the curls.

Mrsjay · 20/07/2012 10:48

MIl wanted to keep a lock of D1 hair I said oh they swept it up Im sure she wailed Grin It is a hair cut I didnt get sentimental over it

ReallyTired · 20/07/2012 10:48

My daughter is three years old and has never had a haircut. She looks gorgeous. She has beautiful gold ringlets.

Ds had his first hair cut at about 2 years old. Babies and toddler hate having their cut and I prefer to put off the dreaded day as long as I can.

My ten year old has decided that he wants to grow his hair and I am letting him. The only problem is that he is getting beautiful golden ringlets just like his baby sister.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 20/07/2012 10:52

What is this bleddy obsession with ringlets ?? They're a pain in the arse.

My dd has them, they go down her back and old dears can't resist them ( she's 13 now so can't see them going anywhere ) gorgeous to look at but a pain in the arse to look after, also looks like a rats nest if left to it's own devices.......don't even get me started on trying to come head lice out of a curly mass Angry

They're lovely, but I must confess I was hoping they'd drop out as she got older Blush

steppemum · 20/07/2012 10:57

no, not sentimental about hair me.
Although ds had 2 very cute long curls at the back and I didn't cut them for ages and ages cos I thought they looked cute. I did actually stick one of the curls in his baby book, but really wouldn't have been a deal if I hadn't. Just thought it would be fun to remember.
dd1's hair was awful, stuck in her eyes, grew ragged, so I cut it regularly from early age. looked much better.
dd2 had very cute curls, pretty much never cut as it grew nicely. Then she gave herself haircut few months ago aged 4, chopped huge chunks out of it on top, now it is short all over!

I don't get sentimental about first shoes, first clothes etc either.

Mrsjay · 20/07/2012 12:15

apocalypse dd who is 14 has the same hair it is a PITA and yes birds could nest if it wasnt tamed

lynniep · 20/07/2012 12:30

YANBU.
But then again it depends on the hair doesnt it?

I was quite sad when DS1 lost his first lot (fell out), because it was a lovely carroty colour which I hadnt been expecting. On the other hand I was not impressed by the unfortunate monk do he ended up with. Not attractive. I saved a bit of the carroty hair which was dead straight.

It grew back blonde. And it was gorgeous. When I was a little girl I had thick straight brown hair, and I would have done ANYTHING to have hair like his. Bright blond with white and ginger streaks. Baby soft and ringlety. Those curls were the envy of many a parent. No they were. Honestly!
I was still relieved when I cut it off, because it was less hassle and he finally looked like a little boy, but man it was BEOOTIFUL!

DS2 I wasn't quite so attached to his hair as its straight. Was quite sad to lose the white blonde when he had his 'big' haircut a few months back as its darker now. Both boys 'new' hair is much thicker and darker in fact.

chandellina · 20/07/2012 12:50

Yanbu. I am eyeing 7 month old dd's "fringe, " which just looks ragged and sort of greasy. Much better in a little quiff.
:)

Don't recall making a big deal about either of mine getting their hair cut. Didn't keep any hair. mind you I didn't cry when they started primary school, finished primary school etc. Some people fuss more about routine events involving their kids than others.

darthsillius · 20/07/2012 13:57

I agree. I did a toddler gym class once and lots of the kids had never had their hair cut. There were loads of mullets and strange odd lengths. Awful.

My kids loved have their heir cut even as babies.

Woodlands · 20/07/2012 14:09

It does depend on the type of hair, as others have said. My DS's hair is dead straight so it just looks mullety if it gets long. He had his first hair cut at about a year old - he had had that bald patch babies get at the back from sleeping on their backs, so the hair was shorter in the middle and had grown into two rats tails on either side. Yuck! It looked so much smarter cut!

somewherewest · 20/07/2012 14:58

DS was born with a full head of spikey blonde hair and had his first haircut at 3mo because his uncanny resemblance to Jedward was freaking us out. It never occurred to me to be sentimental about it unlike my crazy MIL who still has every scrap of clothing her DSs every wore

lola88 · 21/07/2012 19:48

sorry to have abandoned! I'm glad i'm not alone in not being bothered i've kept a bit because the hairdresser asked if i wanted to keep it and someone gave me a little 'my first curl' box i didn't think much about keeping it. He didn't mind having his hair cut just sat while my mum chatted to him only the back of his neck was tricky.

He looks so cute now was like a wee hobo before.
