To disagree with dh over "art" being too erotic to hang in home

We were given a wedding present of a copy of titian's 'venus of urbino' by my little brother. Dh has protested it for years as he does not like my brother. It is quite large and dominates our living room.
Recently though he looked it up and as art goes it is considered a bit explicit due to the nude having her hand more or less at her private parts. I have to say I misinterpreted this as modesty but it is the opposite.
We have a three year old and a five week old. At ds1 birthday party some of the other parents tutted a bit and so have dh's family. I put this down to prudishness, lack of education, overly British etc etc.
Dh tried to wind me up tonight by saying social services would not approve!
I don't want ds1 to be exposed to anything that might be innapropriate but I don't want to buy into a culture of shame about bodies either.
Should I take the picture down? I am thinking a plain old nude is one thing but re examining this it is fairly erotic. I have no problem with my kids growing up one day obviously they will be exposed to sex education etc buti want to preserve their innocence. However I also don't want them to feel any shame or to be hemmed in by philistine like thinking.
Thoughts on this?

Our local paper once had an outraged letter from a tourist asking why the Cerne Abbas Giant hadn't been covered up! He said it should be bulldozed to protect the innocent minds of children.

I don't find it offensive or tut worthy in any way, I just don't like it.

I prefer more sophistication in my art, along these lines.

classy

Reproductions are a bit naff, I think, but if you must have this one, surely it's a bedroom item. It's Venus after all. (I have a reproduction Manet I bought as a souvenir so I'm not the best judge; a vase of flowers, if you're wondering).

fluffiphlox · 21/07/2012 09:22

dollys :)

mumeeee · 21/07/2012 13:27

It doesn't offend me but I wouldn't like it on my living room wall. To large and overbearing. I would move it to another room.

Floggingmolly · 21/07/2012 13:46

If you want it on your wall, keep it on your wall, but don't put other people's reservations about it down to their "lack of education" - it makes you sound like a patronising arse.
It's not that cultured. If it was an original, of course, you could feel as smug as you liked.

diddl · 21/07/2012 14:16

I like it.

But wouldn´t want it in a size that dominates.

Mintyy · 21/07/2012 14:24

Me and dh are both very well educated and have excellent taste in art. We have a lot of proper professional artists in the family, actually. I wouldn't have the Venus print up anywhere in my house. Infact, in our living room we have something very beautiful which seems to be a talking point amongst our glamorous friends of the glitterati what do you think?.

WilsonFrickett · 21/07/2012 14:31

Mintyy that is vair vair naice. Have you had it professionally valued recently? You'd be pure shocked at how much my premium has gone up since I had this hudsongretel.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/real-green-lady.html revalued

Floggingmolly · 21/07/2012 14:31

Now that's pure class, Mintyy Grin

fluffiphlox · 21/07/2012 14:33

Oh mintyy you will be in Hello magazine before you know it :)

Margerykemp · 21/07/2012 14:36

Are you really talking about porn? Hmm

hettiebull · 21/07/2012 16:02

Maybe your DH really grew out of hanging reproduction art after university like everyone else? But he is using the erotic excuse to avoid hurting your feelings :)
Not liking a reproduction isn't necessarily about lack of education/not broad minded etc - it really isn't to everyone's taste for the front room, even if you could admire it as a masterpiece in a gallery.

TheCunnyFunt · 21/07/2012 16:22

Maybe your DH would prefer this version?
