He looks at the doorway at the same spot each time and his eyes/head follow 'something' that is invisible to me. He has a confused facial expression and sometimes he meows Shock

It freaks me out

AIBU?

Who ya gonna call?

ChocolateTeacup · 18/07/2012 22:04

Its a fly

Iamsparklyknickers · 18/07/2012 22:06

Both of mine do that, it must be some universal cat joke.

They both do that thing when they sit there washing their paws then suddenly do a lap of the house, running like fairy elephants - that's the one that makes you spend a fortune on flea spray and obsessively brush them for days to try and find one.

Gits Hmm

SoleSource · 18/07/2012 22:06

It's not a fly and Ghostbusters are engaged LOL :)

Have you stolen my cats sparklyknickers? Grin

Mine do that - when they're not out being ASBO-Cats. Hmm

SoleSource · 18/07/2012 22:09

Grin at universal cat joke. My other cat before he was run over and killed used to do it too and my dog before he ran away!

PMSL @ ASBO cats. Sounds like you've thought up a really interesting new computer game there Salmotrutta

They're here!

lovebunny · 18/07/2012 22:11

first time i stayed at home when family went away, i was sixteen. oh, they said, neighbour's big dog will keep you company. yes, she did. she scared me rigid barking at things i couldn't see and doing the staring thing op's cat does.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 18/07/2012 22:14

It is fluff. Your cat is purposely being a bastard in order to freak you out.

SoleSource · 18/07/2012 22:16

Grin lovebunny

HE IS DOING IT AGAIN

Have you got a draught there, that bits of dust might get caught in and swirl around?

openerofjars · 18/07/2012 22:20

My baby DD does the same thing, and sometimes grins at something only she can see, over my shoulder. Her brother did the same thing when he was a baby. Creeps me out massively, although I'm sure it's just that they find the wallpaper highly amusing or something. Brr.

BigHairyFlowers · 18/07/2012 22:20

He's trying to make you get up so he can pinch the warm spot on the sofa.

SoleSource · 18/07/2012 22:21

Can cats see dust that us humans cannot? Or do you mean big pieces we could see too? There is a bit of a draft under the front door as the draught excluder has been damaged and I took it off. He does stare near the door but always did before this. Hmm I wondering now. I do not believe in external powers but... it is unsettling especially as the other cat and dog stared in the same place, previously.

You can do it back, choose a random spot on the carpet to look at. Bare in mind cats are well rehearsed in this game but if you preserve you might win. You won't get to bed till 3am but you'll win.

Report back how your cat punishes victory [winks]

Iamsparklyknickers · 18/07/2012 22:52

Or Wink even!

On a more serious note cats and dogs have very sensitive hearing, it could be pipes, wires or a small gap in the bricks in that particular spot.

oopslateagain · 18/07/2012 22:55

My cat used to watch something walk down the stairs. Something invisible. On the open staircase. Scared the fuck out of me.

They do it on purpose, you know. If you're freaked out you might forget you've already fed them tonight... Grin

out2lunch · 18/07/2012 22:57

we call it the staring game here - i look intently trying to see what he is looking at and when i look back at him he is looking at me with a 'i win' expression on his siamese face

WeeDom · 18/07/2012 22:58

I mean wee bits that might be visible to it, since he's closer, and also has got into the habit of sitting there to be amused by them - maybe even sitting there hopefully in case an entrancing mote should catch his eye.

Cats are weird...

Solopower · 18/07/2012 22:58

They can tell if you have a baby inside you. So can horses. Xray vision.

So your cat's not staring at the door, he's silently communicating with his little cat friends on the other side. On the other side of the door!

WeeDom · 18/07/2012 22:59

and yes - possibly their eyesight is better/attuned to higher/lower wavelengths?

I dunno. I'm not a vet :)

Kleptronic · 18/07/2012 23:02

How do you know they can tell, do they start knitting booties?

Solopower · 18/07/2012 23:06
Grin

They stare at the bump then they come over and start kneading it and dribbling (we called it making puddings). And yes, they do sing lullabies!

Mine also used to talk on the phone and jump onto the backs of unwary callers from the top of the hedge by the door in the dark. So we'd hear the doorbell and then a shriek of terror. When we opened the door, the cat would fly in first, so we learnt to duck.
