to be a bit sad

that DS1 went to his (yr6) prom in shorts and a shirt he picked up off his bedroom floor, when all the girls' mums had clearly spent hours helping them get ready?

It wasn't a formal do, BBQ and disco. Dresscode said they should wear what they were comfortable in. The girls were in full makeup, fancy hair and evening dress, the boys mostly like my DS.

DS1 shorts were smart ones!!

OTOH, I'm not sure how I'd cope with my 11yo daughter wearing a strapless ballgown - there were a lot of them about.

I think it's lovely. He looked like a little boy, which he is, and felt comfortable with it. Hope he had a nice time Smile

lovebunny · 18/07/2012 19:51

oh dear. year 6 prom? your son is the only one with the right idea, by the sound of it.

complexnumber · 18/07/2012 19:54

The girls were in full makeup, fancy hair and evening dress

That's the sad bit

E320 · 18/07/2012 19:54

Whole thing dreadful. Your son is quite right.
Why on earth does everyone subscribe to these awful customs from across the pond

EchoBitch · 18/07/2012 20:03

E320 Agree wholeheartedly.

Hideous to dress little girls up like that for a BBQ,madness.

yellowraincoat · 18/07/2012 20:04

The idea of a little girl in full makeup and a ballgown makes me do a sad clown face.

Sirzy · 18/07/2012 20:05

"The girls were in full makeup, fancy hair and evening dress"

How are they supposed to enjoy the fun and games? Your son is the one who is going to be able to enjoy it more!

Olympia2012 · 18/07/2012 20:33

Year 6???

Bloody hell.. that's ridiculous... Year 11 was enough

olimpia · 18/07/2012 20:37

The girls wearing make up and gown at 10/11 years of age?
Golly I feel old Sad

AxlRosesLeatherTrousers · 18/07/2012 20:43

I remember my DSD's year 6 prom (she's 19 now). She wore her hair in braids, a denim skirt with logo'd top and big furry ugg boot type things and a few sparkles on her face. All of her friends were in full evening gowns with full make up, spray tans, and hair done in the hairdressers! ShockHmm I mean these are 11 year olds! Even for her year 11 leaver's prom she didn't wear a full evening gown she went for funky and quirky.

I think your DS has the right idea.

Inyourhippyhat · 18/07/2012 20:44

DD went to her prom with full make-up, her hair was up and she wore a strapless gown. But then, she is 17 and was leaving school for ever. Sounds as though your DS was dressed completely appropriately. Good for you for not togging him up like a penguin!

Hopeforever · 18/07/2012 20:46

I'm very sad that the girls were in strapless gowns, what will there be to look forward to in 5 years when it's the end of GCSE Prom?

Well done on your son for wearing nice shorts and shirt, sensible chap

hiddenhome · 18/07/2012 21:21

This is why I am so glad to have boys Grin

MammaTJ · 18/07/2012 23:33

Year 4 leavers prom here (we have a middle school system). Most of the boys had suits and most of the girls wore lovely dresses.

Pandemoniaa · 19/07/2012 00:15

Sensible lad. The whole idea of primary school proms makes me shudder.

whois · 19/07/2012 07:59

Another one in agreement with E320. I don't like the idea of girls so you g wearing so much make up.

Iheartpasties · 19/07/2012 08:04

make up for 11 year olds? sounds sad to me. bless your son, he had the right idea.

80sMum · 19/07/2012 08:26

It beats me why we have to copy these over-the-top US traditions at all. What's wrong with the good old UK school disco?

TroublesomeEx · 19/07/2012 10:12

My son's school had a party not a prom.

They had a disco, they were allowed free reign of the jungle gym outside. There was a hog roast on the field. The teachers got involved. There was lots of photos and silliness.

Not a ball gown or false eyelash in sight.

It was perfect. Your son sounds like he had the right idea.
