to feel sorry that chickens' happiness isn't worth 60p to most people?

So - in my local Sainsburies you can buy pre-cooked whole chickens. Free range cost 60p more than the battery farmed variety.

Girl behind the counter told me almost no one buys the free range ones.

Now, I know things are very very tight these days for many families. But this is Sainburies where the average shopper is probably slightly better off.

Doesn't anyone care about where their food comes from now at all? Is the only thing that matters now the cost?

I'm not vegetarian - but I try to shop reasonably thoughtfully, locally when I can etc,

poor chooks!

As it happens I am one of the plebs, just one who makes the choice that my family eats less food, but as healthy and ethical as we can afford. And yes I'm more than happy to fuck off as I've wasted far too much time on this thread already.

Ditto AmberLeaf.

Bye.

Moominsarescary · 21/07/2012 23:07

Nice, well you make your family eat less food. Like that makes you better than someone who eats cheap chicken

PenisVanLesbian · 21/07/2012 23:17

Bet your ethics don't stretch as far as others...so they are looking down on you. And most of your socalled ethics are just pandering to marketing ploys to make you spend more for little gain to the chickens.
Go be a vegan if you want to be ethical. Otherwise, stop bleating about how much better than others you are. You're not.

NakedButNotFamous · 21/07/2012 23:27

I always buy free range eggs. In fact, I have refused eggs that aren't free range. What I don't understand, is why I have no qualms about eating the cheaper chicken? I'm a hypocrite. I used to buy corn fed chicken once in a while. That's the only time I have tasted a difference between the different chickens so have no problem splashing out on that in future

garlicbutter · 21/07/2012 23:45

They are, Naked, aren't they? Corn-fed chickens much nicer, I mean.

Some sanctimonious twerp will be along in a minute to tell us corn gives hens indigestion or summat Hmm

Pointless musing: Are the yolks of corn-fed chicken eggs more yellow than ordinary eggs? Yes, I could have googled that faster than I typed the question. But I don't actually care Grin

Kayano · 22/07/2012 10:04

Gaelic you still haven't told me just how 'free range' a free range chicken is

I only have chicken twice a week tops

Do you drink milk? Eat cheese? There is cruelty All over the place if you aren't a vegan.

Pay more for your glamourous chicken, I don't care, it's still a dead chicken with an inch more room or whatever

boneyjonesy · 22/07/2012 13:11

I think you are unraesonable to buy those dripping-in-fat-precooked-chickens anyway, for one who cares so much about food quality

scottishmummy · 22/07/2012 21:58

in a recession folks make ends meet and stretch monies
I find it a bit galling preaching to folk to eat organic
frankly it's up to individuals to detainee their priorities
