To look for a ballet school for my 9 month old?

Blush

I have just read the other thread about ballet on here and couldn't help myself. Teeny ballet shoes and tiny tutus... makes my heart all a flutter.

I am very proud of my daughter because, regardless of her dancing ability, her hair bun is massive. In fact, for a recent exam the teacher did it in a chignon instead because the hair was too big for a bun. DD is the Samson of ballet dancers, despite never having worn a tutu.

olivestree · 17/07/2012 15:18

So disappointed to realise that your DD is starting secondary school.

Grin at a 3 year old with a 'chignon'. Now that deserves a thread of its own.

She did actually have massive hair at 3. Both DD and DS were born with a full head of hair, but it took 2 years to grow DD's hair really long.

Groovee · 17/07/2012 15:45

My friend phoned the prestige ballet school where we live and was told, "My dear I don't want to hear from you until she is 3!"

My dd started when she was 3 at a class which she still goes to and loves. That's 9 years of Saturday's I've travelled the same route.

This thread would have been even better if it had been about a boychild, of course.

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 17/07/2012 15:57

At my primary school PE for the first few years was ballet - boys and girls.

The boys were so ridiculously cute in the little shorts.

Primafacie · 17/07/2012 15:58

try [www.babyballet.co.uk] maybe?

Primafacie · 17/07/2012 15:58

gah, www.babyballet.co.uk

PhlipPhlop · 17/07/2012 15:58

I found this for you while you wait, OP

Primafacie · 17/07/2012 16:03

or just get this as I did for Halloween www.frillylily.co.uk/superbasket/product/90/Short+Fairy+Tutu

AnnaFender · 17/07/2012 16:08

My 4 year old goes to stomp around a dance studio and fall over a lot our local version of baby ballet, and she wears a pink, frilly, sparkly tutu. She is very cute. So there.

Harleyband · 17/07/2012 16:44

Can you find a ballet class where the instructions are in Mandarin, thus saving yourself an extra journey each week?

perceptionreality · 17/07/2012 16:49

9 months is a bit young! I'm going to enrole dd3 in September - she'll be 3.5. I don't think they take children much younger than that.

NigellasGuest · 17/07/2012 16:55

Seriously though if anyone's interested this forum is a mine of information about ballet for kids - there are some very experienced (and friendly) ballet mums on there.

For my part, DD was en pointe from age 2. At 3, she had a pudding named after her. (to paraphrase French&Saunders) Grin

ontheedgeofwhatever · 17/07/2012 16:56

Let me know how you get on OP - due to give birth next Wednesday if there's a suitable class perhaps baby could start on Thursday or would I be blighting its chances by leaving it beyond Wednesday afternoon?

froggies · 17/07/2012 16:59

Dd2 was so desperate to copy dd1 when she was at ballet, she used to stand at the door and copy the lesson at 2! The teacher asked her to join in - free of charge for the first wee while because she didn't have the attention span to stay with the whole lesson, so she got to stay as long as she liked. She is nearly 4 now, still enjoys it, has been in two little 'shows'. dd1 has given up all dancing in favour of ponies when told I couldn't afford both, dd2 vomits at the smell of ponies, I expect she will stick with the dancing for now!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/07/2012 17:12

OP - pleeeease adopt me - I really wanted ballet lessons but my mum said 'no'. Sadly I would now look like a space hopper in a tutu, but I would do my best to be graceful and sparkly!

Anyway , you should definitely get her a tutu - just think how cute she'll look in it - even if it is accessorised with this summer's must-haves - woolly tights, umbrella and wellies.

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 17/07/2012 17:39

I started dd in ballet at 3. Sadly she is more suited to Irish dancing, as she is like a baby elephant when she lands :o

GetOrfMoiiLand · 17/07/2012 17:44

I give thanks to all the gods in the heavens that dd loathe ballet and never went back.

Unfortunately she got into football, cricket and rugby instead, so endless weekends watching boring matches in the rain.

This parenting caper is a pile o' shite sometimes.

My very clumsy 6 year old has been going to ballet for three years. She is amazingly graceful when dancing.

She also plays rubgy!!!

I was always stunned at how the very young teacher managed to get a group of 10 three year olds to follow instructions and get them all to do the same thing at the same time. I kind of felt if I had tried it would have been like trying to nail jelly to a wall.

Socknickingpixie · 17/07/2012 17:58

ive been doing ballet for 39 years and i didnt get to wear a tutu till i was 8 now i often go to tescos wearing one

olivestree · 17/07/2012 18:44

Thanks for the suggestions Phlip & Prima. Baby Ballet looks cute, albeit a bit vom inducing pink. I liked the inclusion of 'hopping' as one of the skills covered. Hmm

Brilliant idea Harley. Now I just need to work out a way to elbow in her Kumon and we will be all set. Maybe she can Plie in time to times table drills in Mandarin?

Ontheedge, if you do some pre-natal training you should be able to get that baby to pirouette right on out of you.

DD2 and ds both started ballet at 2yo. The don't do formal type ballet, but it's games and mime using ballet skills at that age.

Ds did look sweet in his dsis' pink tutu when she put it on him. I've got the photos for his wedding. Grin

Tap dance for 2 year olds?

I would have thought structured dance was damaging to young bones.
