I'm trying to make sense of the 'important' thing?

But anyway, YABU to think an owner wouldn't be interested in their dog because it's dirty and hungry.

What else would you expect a lost dog to be?

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 16:08

I'm testing on phone auto correct clearly thinks it important yes am hoping just a lost pet she was clearly unhappy being out

Well I can't see the owner of a chipped dog being stupid enough to dump it on the streets, can you?

Lizcat · 16/07/2012 16:10

99 percent of the chipped strays brought into us have loving owners looking desperately for them. If the dog has been on the run for more than 24 hours it will look hungry and dirty.

WorraLiberty · 16/07/2012 16:11

My dog looks permanently hungry and dirty....even after his bath and dinner Grin

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 16:14

You talk sense (unlike my phone )

Why not call vets and see if dog re-united with owner ? I'm sure they will put your mind at rest.

Sparklingbrook · 16/07/2012 17:57

Yes, ring the vets.

Shirsten · 16/07/2012 18:23

I did this once - spent about 45 minutes coaxing a stray dog into my car that had been wandering the streets all night after a thunderstorm had scared it from its home the night before - when I found him he was 3 miles from home.

When I took him to the vets, the vet said the dog was very thin and was concerned about him. We found that he was microchipped and the vet said that he would check out the owners when they came to pick him up (this was at about 1pm and the owners said that they were just about to go and look for him which I was pretty Shock by as they said he'd run off the night before so had been out all night in a thunderstorm).

Anyway, the vet said that the dog was pretty pleased to see its owners and he was happy to let the dog go. I hope that the vet that you took this dog to is caring enough to make sure that the owners are looking after him.

I phoned later on and got all this from the vet.

Well done for picking the poor little dog up. I like to think that someone would do that for my dog if she ran off one day.

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 18:42

Will ring the vets tomorrow yes, they will probably be closed now and i stupidly forgot to get their number or even the name of the place, but there can't be that many vets in that town so lets hope the dog will be ok. I tempted her with crisps and she came running up to me and sat so she was clearly trained.

What made me Angry that people were just ignoring her as she ran around in the road, cars having to stop to avoid her - she was obviously really scared. Maybe thats a good sign that she wasn't used to being out on her own.

Any news Lucy?

coffeeinbed · 17/07/2012 12:38

I once found a dog, rang the owner - there was a phone and owner said "I know where you are, just tie her to the railings I'll pick her up soon"
Needless to say we waited.
Not sure why I'm posting this now. Still upset about it I suppose.
Hope your found dog has a happy reunion.

messtins · 17/07/2012 14:24

Hope you have been able to find out what happened and put your mind at rest. I work at a vets, if an animal is chipped we can nearly always reunite them with their owner very quickly - they cared enough to get her chipped, right?
Even if they can't contact the owner (sometimes people move and forget to update database) she'll be passed to the dog warden and the owners have a week to claim her - at least she'll be safe and well fed.
You did a kind thing and you've done your bit to help her - pat on the back!

PavlovtheCat · 17/07/2012 14:29

my mum had several dogs as i grew up, and cats, because she fretted just like you. She would get herself so upset about them not having a home that when their owners did not show and they were going to be carted off to battersea dogs home, she would go and get them and bring them home!

But in those days, dogs were not chipped and there were lots of stray dogs in our area.

turbo1 · 17/07/2012 14:35

I think it is lovely that you care so much about animals

ddubsgirl · 17/07/2012 15:13

me & sil found a stray cat,was in a very bad way, dirty full of fleas, got him in a box and took him to my vets, they kept him for few days until rspca could come and get him,he wasnt chipped,we called and got updates, sadly we couldnt afford the treatment and rspca told us very rudely that he had cat flu and altho treatable he was to be put to sleep :( we were so upset and found out of a vets that would have taken him and treated him had we took him there first.

DizzyKipper · 17/07/2012 15:32

Let us know Lucy, we want to know it all turned out ok in the end

catseverywhere · 17/07/2012 15:45

I've done this, found possibly the largest Rottweiler I had ever seen before sitting in the middle of the road, miles from anywhere. It turned out to be a daft, dopey lump of a dog who just got into my car when I told it to (the car of a complete stranger) and I took it to the police station - the brand-new all-singing, all-dancing mahoosive police station in our town, who looked at the dog, looked at me, and told me they had no facilities to take him. He was clearly a 'him'.

So I took him to my vet, wondering if he might have a chip - turns out he did, and the vet let me know later that day that he had been reunited with his owner. Hope this happens for you too, and good on you for looking out for the little creature xx

Lucyellensmum99 · 17/07/2012 20:59

for some reason, i haven't been able to bring myself to ring up and find out about her - i don't want to be told there was no owner coming forward as i would then feel responsible and I would feel terrible as i already have two dogs and just could not afford anymore, especially as one is a recent rescue who is a little mischeif bastard who needs alot of my attention.
