To Not Go Out On A Sunny Day?

mumineedawee · 16/07/2012 14:58

I love when its sunny, but find I get horrible headaches if I go out in the sun. I usually go out very early in the day, or wait until early evening to take the children out playing.

Add to this that two of my children are very light sensitive and hate the brightness on sunny days.

The windows are open, and they play on the shady patio area, so its not like they are locked up.

My hv called today and was alarmed (her word) that they wouldn't be outside in the sun.

It got me thinking that maybe IABU?

You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't.
Avoiding sunlight can occasionally lead to ricketts. But a lot of sunshine can lead to cancer, sunburn etc.
I think letting them play on a shady patio is a good compromise.
SWBU to be alarmed by it. That is a bit of an over reaction.

Do you never go out on sunny days?

Do you go out when it's raining?

TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii · 16/07/2012 15:05
  • sorry I realise you do go out just early/late, I mean do you never go out for the day on sunny days?
mumineedawee · 16/07/2012 15:08

We do go out. If we're going to the beach, or open farm, or whatever, then we are out for the whole day.

However, if its just a day with nothing planned, then we'll probably go to the park or cycle path early for an hour or two. Then home for a while, doing craft, painting or making lego on the patio. Then back out again in the evening, usually to the park.

You sound perfectly normal in that case.

Hat? I speak as a blue-tinged blonde.

mumineedawee · 16/07/2012 15:13

Thanks TeWiDoesTheHulaInHawaii

I think that the children all seem ok and enjoy their day, usually.

I lived abroad at one stage (pre children) and no one ventured out in the middle of the day.

sun Hmm

more chance of trench foot than sunburn Sad

thebody · 16/07/2012 15:18

You sound normal, why is your health visitor calling unless you have a tiny baby or you called her.

Hv visits aren't mandatory, don't open the door. Sounds like a silly cow to me, shady play is fine...

does anyone on here ever admit that not everyday they go bike riding, park, and craft maybe a museum or two.

everytime someone is questioned they always reel off a list of wholesome family activities they do daily and i am wondering if this is infact true or if people are like us and everyone else i know where the kids may go to the park every nw and then but mostly play in a garden or inside with toys unless theres a trip planned which ight happen once a week.

cantspel · 16/07/2012 16:16

Mine are teens now but we never did craft, went bike riding in the park and only went to one museum.

Mine played in the garden or the park but never out the front.
Once in a while we might go swimming or to the cinema.
Dont do theme parks and even though we live on the coast we never go to the beach.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2012 16:20

We do lots of healthy, outside, fun activities because otherwise DD would drive me completely nuts, she is the busiest child ever born I am such a good mother.

wandawings · 16/07/2012 16:25

minimisschief You just described my family.

ouryve · 16/07/2012 16:31

YANBU. Fair skinned family here who stick to the shade as much as possible. I have horribly sun sensitive skin, too which is also intolerant to most sun creams.

Not that we've had any prolonged sunshine since May. The school walk left me with very red, sore, bumpy skin, that week.

And to the person gasping about does the OP go out in the rain. My answer is if we need to, yes. One of the boys has severe sensory problems with it, so we only go out in heavy rain if absolutely necessary, but light rain doesn't affect any of us adversely like sunshine does, so we'll happily go out in it.

VikingLady · 16/07/2012 16:53

I am currently using DD (4m) as an excuse not to go out on a "lovely hot, sunny day" - PIL's words. After all, she still has very delicate skin, and shouldn't be in direct sunlight being hot, sweaty and sticky with icky sunscreen. We should definitely be sitting quietly in the shade with some toys, a good book, a gin and tonic drink and no PIL...

I spent most of my childhood trying to avoid sunshine. I once burnt hanging out the washing. I need SPF50 to walk into town on a very sunny day. And I don't want to look like I am pieced together from alligator skin by the time I am 40. Stick to your guns!

Shutupanddrive · 16/07/2012 17:06

YANBU, I always feel guilty though if we're inside when the sun is out so I know how you feel!

valiumredhead · 16/07/2012 17:19

Sounds sensible to be.
