To want to go food shopping?

I have wanted to do a supermarket shop for about six weeks now, but dh says that it s a silly waste of money, because we have food in.

Technically, we do. We have loads frozen beef stew (which is lovely, but nt for every meal) loads and loads of cous cous, about one portion of frozen chips, less than one portion each of chicken nuggets, fish fingers, veggie fingers, cauliflower cheese. Two packs of posh frozen stewing beef. Half a loaf of white bread. Some cheap ham and cheese. Cans of random stuff (kidney beans, chick peas etc) pasta, red pesto and butter. Some elderly carrots, potatoes and onions. Porridge oats. Flour. Herbs and spices.

Dh says there are loads of meals there, and tbh there are - If we were skint I could feed us easily. But we have been doing that now for six weeks. Dh has gone shopping on a meal by meal basis, and thinks I should do th same.

He works at tea time (and lunch time) a lot of the time, so it is me cooking. I study and work from home, so lunchtime is often just me.

Aibu to just want some frozen pizzas, beans, cereal, tuna, yogurts etc, or should I get on with emptying the stores?

Can you justify a trip to the market (presuming you have one) for fresh fruit and veg and use it with the stuff you already have?

Ephiny · 16/07/2012 12:35

Why do you need his permission to go to the supermarket? Confused

Shutupanddrive · 16/07/2012 12:36

You haven't had anything fresh for 6 weeks? What about fruit, milk etc

Petsinmypudenda · 16/07/2012 12:36

Why do you need to ask

mollymole · 16/07/2012 12:38

Do you really have to ask and 'be allowed' to visit the supermarket.
Where do you get fresh fruit and veg from ??

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2012 12:40

Grin at "Elderly carrots"

I am like you, I shop even though we have stuff in when I should be making meals out of what we have.

Just use it up then do a shop.

TheSkiingGardener · 16/07/2012 12:44

He shops as he wants you but bans you from the supermarket?

Go to the supermarket, then work out why you haven't done so for so long.

BrittaPerry · 16/07/2012 12:45

Oh, sorry, we have bought milk, bread, (some) fruit, from the corner shop. It's not lke I need permission, he just makes it very clear that he thinks it a huge waste of money to buy food when we have stuff in.

I would love to have the time and energy to cook from scratch, but I don't always, and when it is just me for lunch I can't be bothered. Same with going shopping every day - I would rather do an online or Iceland delivery shop (or fill my bag on wheels at the cheap shop) and just have food that put in the oven, grill, microwave or pan and be able to spend time with the kids rather than sitting them in front of the tv while I spend ages cooking. Plus the kids get too grumpy after school to go shopping, and I am usually busy in the day.

I'm a bit confused as to why you can't just do a supermarket trip? If it's about access to finances, maybe that's a discussion you need to have with DH? It's not unreasonable, I think, to want to have some go-to food in stock, whether that be yoghurt or pizza or whatever... My DH (when single) used to shop on a day to day basis; he did eventually realise that when there's more than one of you it makes more sense to do it in bulk! That said, I also have purges when I want a new handbag and am quite skint I get fed up of how much we spend on food that I use up everything in the cupboards and freezer before I buy more!

OhDearNigel · 16/07/2012 12:48

I'd just use it up - you can use that all in a week. Throw away the stuff you really don't want to use Wink

Then you can have the joy of restocking the cupboards with lovely stuff and a clear conscience

OhDearNigel · 16/07/2012 12:48

I don't get how it's a "huge waste of money" though - it's not as if you're going to throw the stuff away, is it ?

crypes · 16/07/2012 12:49

Most men hate shopping and most detest supermarket shopping. My DH would rather live off of fresh air than go to the supermarket. Do not pander to your DH's hatred of all things shopping. Tell him he doesnt have to go or even know about it. Men think of shopping as a 'womans hobby'.

Fiendishlie · 16/07/2012 12:51

When I read threads like these I realise it's a fecking good job my DH doesn't try to control me in any way, shape or form.

He wouldn't last five minutes.

Ephiny · 16/07/2012 12:51

I can kind of see his point, in that I wouldn't bother going out to the shops if there was stuff in the house I could eat (unless I needed something particular). But if you think differently, then why can't you just go? If you do the cooking, surely you get to decide what needs buying and when?

midori1999 · 16/07/2012 12:54

Well, unless you have no money for shopping or are going to waste food that can't be saved if you go shopping, what does it matter? Just go!
