do you think DD aged 7 will be ok running on roads unaccompanied

DD who is 7 wants to take part in a Fun run next weekend. We have been round the course her on feet me on bike and it is 2.25 miles (3.6Km) and run entirely on hilly bendy country roads which will be open. Now the first thing is that there is no way I am doing it and DH is busy with another DC that day.
There will be marshalls on the route particularly on junctions, but obviously not everywhere, and probably about 40 kids doing it altogether some with parents. The thing that worries me is that the roads are open and there is no verge or footpath and in parts visibility is reduced because of bends and hills although the road is quite wide (wide enough for 2 cars to pass) and on a sunday afternoon should be fairly quiet Do you think she will be ok doing it unaccompanied?

Some of you must have very unfit children then. Lots of sporty children would have no problem maintaining a good pace for that distance. If it would be so easy for the unfit op to do it, then her fit sporty child should easily beat her.

I would't let her do it on her own either but for you all to berate the op for being reluctant to do it as well is BU in my book.

bejeezus · 16/07/2012 10:42

MrsDV how did the 10k go??

SparkyTGD · 16/07/2012 10:42

I'm not particularly fit but could definitely run jog with a 7yr old for 2.5 miles.

An older child would be faster with more stamina so no way but think 7yr old pace would be possible for most reasonably fit adults.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 16/07/2012 10:42

It's another AIBU where OP just wants to be told it'll be fine, I think. OP, lots of people think it won't, and that YABU. Does that make any difference?

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 10:43

PB? persoanal best? i don't run regularly, i did go out and run with my DP last weekend, we did about 4k, ish, cross country with some BASTARD hills, i didn't run the whole way i had to stop and wait for DP a couple of times, it took about 40 minutes in total. So 3k would be half an hour these days - a couple of years ago i did the 5k in 30 minutes so im slacking.

"im not really worrying about her falling, so what" says it all really

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 16/07/2012 10:43

That is point OP if you have been cycling you ate probably a lot fitter than you think.
And although a 7 year old is probably quick off the blocks I am not sure they can run faster and for longer than an adult

ThePigOnTheWall · 16/07/2012 10:44

Have you ever run with a young child steaming? I mean for more than 100 yards?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 16/07/2012 10:44

Mine are older than 7 and I can't remember what their running was like then - based on their personalities, I would expect that they'd have sprinted initially and then slowed down a fair bit on the hills. And even if they zipped round the lot, I'd still rather be there, even if not alongside, doing walking/jogging/running as I was able. At least then if she does fall down, you'd catch up shortly and help her 'hobble' to the end.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 16/07/2012 10:45

Yes, for 5k, Pig, but older than 7.

ThePigOnTheWall · 16/07/2012 10:45

Bejeezuz if she's not keeping up, what's the point of running "with" her. I'm confused!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 16/07/2012 10:45

I did it!

Thank you for asking bejeezus

it's not a 'race' where you have to maintain a speed to win though is it, this is a fun run.

you know, where you run for fun..

unless you have fallen, skinned your knees, twisted your ankle, been frightened by a twat in a fast car who thinks you should run on a track, you aren't sure how far you've got left to run, the responsible adult you were with has had to take another child off for some treatment and you're running alone...

It is a race on country roads, with blind corners etc and NO verge.... no way...

TheEternalOptimist · 16/07/2012 10:47

Um, why is the OP getting a kicking for not wanting to run with her DD? I would not be keen on doing this either, since it has been a while since I went running.

2.5m in hilly terrain is not easy for someone who does not run.

OP
How quick is your DD? If you were to walk behind her, are you likely to be able to keep up?

Or could you ask a friend to run with her?

Ephiny · 16/07/2012 10:47

I'm not a great runner either, but seriously how fast is a 7 year old girl likely to be going?

I don't see why you shouldn't be able to go along on your bike anyway, you've said the roads will be open, so who is going to say you aren't allowed to cycle on a public road? Confused

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 10:49

When i ran the 5k, this was with my DD1, she was 10 at the time - i beat her! Grin because she sprinted off at the start and didn't pace herself! and no pig my DD was very slim and fit and not a lard arse like me!

There is no point whatsoever in the OP running this with her child as she doesn't give a flying fuck if she falls over!!

Whats your PB on a 3k then pig?

ThePigOnTheWall · 16/07/2012 10:49

I did a 3km "with" my kids to try and encourage them to take up running with me. They whizzed off within 100 yards and I didn't see them till I passed them at about 2km sitting by the side with stitch waiting for me :o

I wish there was a running club we could all go to :(

Nit and Lucy if you've done any running, then you know that a hilly 2+ miles is not just a "oh get on with it you lazy mare" proposition - if you're going to run all the way that is

WorraLiberty · 16/07/2012 10:49

I'd be very surprised if a 7yr old would even be allowed to run without an adult to accompany them.

For a start, I imagine the insurance company would shit kittens.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 16/07/2012 10:49

The adult isn't required to run next to the child the whole way, but to take part would suggest moral and physical support if needed. Yes, she might tear off ahead for some of it - she might just zoom on ahead for the whole way, and wait for you at the end, but if she does get out of breath, or hurt herself, at least she knows you are not far away, as surely no adult would just actually trudge the whole thing?

It is also not fair to shunt the responsibility onto marshalls or other parents.

UnChartered · 16/07/2012 10:50

Grin shit kittens, am so stealing that

bejeezus · 16/07/2012 10:50

because she will be 'along in a minute' pig...if dd wants or needs her mum for any reason, she just has to stop and wait a minute

or if she twists her ankle or what have you

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 16/07/2012 10:51

But Pig that's my point, there's no need to run all the way if you don't want to!

Lucyellensmum99 · 16/07/2012 10:51

I woudlnt want to run this straight out but the op has been cycling the route with her dd, would have been just as easy to run it, especially if its hilly!
