i'm a sunday market trader in east london. turns out the lovely council have decided to make it that noone can park in the streets in this particular area (quiet suburban part) so the market will probably be a non player dispite the fact that we have been looking forward to the trading possibilities for months due to it being a major tourist area at the best of times, really gutted. alot of the traders are in a seriously bad way as they have no other means of making a living, i trade in other areas so have that to fall back on (plus dh..) but am still seriously broke without this trade. bloody olympics, from what i know it is buggering alot of peoples livings, not including my own, alot of worried people in london, not to mention the poor sods who live in stratford. i was travelling through there on friday as i live near, the trains on the central line are packed at the best of times, bloody glad i don't rely ont he central line five days a week to get into central london, poor sods

Oh no! Will you get foot traffic if it is normally a tourist area?

bogeyface · 15/07/2012 20:22

I find it disusting that they are trying to put on this spectacle to the world of how amazing GB is whislt simultaneously screwing the very people who's taxes and lottery money has made it possible Angry

bogeyface · 15/07/2012 20:23

typos typos everywhere! sorry!

yellowraincoat · 15/07/2012 20:24

That's crap OP. Is there another market you can trade at maybe?

I know how you feel. Was meant to be working full time this summer teaching kids English - because of the Olympics, loads of parents can't afford to come over cos the rents are so high so we have really low student numbers. So basically I am doing part time with the odd full day. It's shit.

SimplySoo · 15/07/2012 20:24

What do you sell? Can you sell it online? Can you investigate other London markets you can sell at?

OhTheConfusion · 15/07/2012 20:24

Have you asked the local council if consideration is being given to local business' as well as local residents?

The olympics is ment to be boosting local economy and not hindering it so the issue needs to be addressed asap.

JumpingThroughHoops · 15/07/2012 20:37

Have you thought about alternative venues?
IF Romford is out of the equation, what about Petticoat Lane or Deptord? or coming out south, Swanley has a massive Wednesday Saturday market. Car booting?

bitofcheese · 15/07/2012 20:50

thanks for your responses chaps. i sell vintage collectables. was considering portobello rd mkt as i used to trade there years ago however that is a further drive and i think would probably be a nightmare too plus the mkt isnt' anywhere near as good as the one i am at and have been for years. i will call the council tomorrow but doubt they will/can do anything. everyone is up in arms about it. i have friends who have shops there, their rent is SO high, no idea how they will be able to pay. even if we are found somewhere to park, i can't imagine how people will be able to come as alot of our buyers come by car, i guess some may come on foot or on buses etc. it is a real worry. funny thing today was that a chap came round all happy and excited, saying he was doing a survey for the government about how excited eastenders were about 'their' local olympics. a trader friend of mine said to him that if he cared for his safety/life that he should keep his mouth shut and bugger off as if the market traders heard him that would string him up :D . i don't see how the locals can be excited tbh, our council tax has been put right up, you can't get tickets to see any of it, local traffic is HELL, so many routes closed or cut in half (you try driving through hackney, totally changed some areas) and as for the tubes, i imagine they will be hot hell holes. lord knows what the tourists will think, actually i think it is all a bit embarassing, what with the M4 bollocks and the security shite, i hope it all goes off well, then i can get back to trying to scrape a living together. "how excited are all us eastenders?" :D

Totally agree that it's complete shite for eastenders. Some local leisure centres have been closed to locals as they are 'reserved' for athletes to train in. They are not official venues. So local people are barred from their local amenities which they pay for. Completely outrageous.

I also noticed the 'Olympic car lanes' this weekend which means most of us will be stuck in traffic fuming whilst the officials will be flying past us.

I am also majorly pissed off that to see events which take place on public roads (marathon and cycling) are closed off unless you have paid to watch. Makes the Tour de France, where anyone can stand and watch at the roadside, a community, inclusive sport which anybody can watch free of charge an absolute joy.

I despise the corporate greed of the Olympics and am fed up to the back teeth of the whole thing.

bitofcheese · 15/07/2012 21:32

mrs, i agree, it really feels like a money thing for the fatcats and balls to the rest of us 'small people', usual shite

I was all for the Olympics, defended it to everyone but when you see stuff like Olympic lanes (that I assume my council tax is paying) and market traders shoved out and leisure centres closed...fuck that, frankly.

There ARE loads of free things going on, that's great. But I don't see why they need a special lane, ffs.

ElizabethDarcy · 15/07/2012 22:08

I am in SW London and we have Olympic lanes near the top AND bottom of our road... basically marooning our car and making life very hard to get around... PLUS they have taken away the entire bus service for a popular route too. Just won't service the ENTIRE suburb :(

So ALL those bus and car commuters will have to get onto the single tube service we have locally.. and it's already CRAMMED by 7am.

Fun and games these games will be.

LucieMay · 15/07/2012 22:09

yanbu! feel sorry for londoners. glad i live in the north!

yellowraincoat · 15/07/2012 22:11

Thank God I'm not using the Central Line any more. How the hell is that going to look? It's already rammed full and you have to wait for at least 2 or 3 trains to go past most mornings before you can squash in.

I take the District, from the East End to Earls Court - so no doubt I'm going to have the joy of a million tourists every morning, since Earls Court is also an Olympic venue.

Hurrah!

yellowraincoat · 15/07/2012 22:12

Oh and obviously we have Olympic lanes going all the way up our main bus route as well.

JumpingThroughHoops · 15/07/2012 22:15

Greenwich market - will have massive tourist trade. No parking there either!

bitofcheese · 15/07/2012 22:29

jumping - are you in greenwich? i used to love that market, also very touristy. i have been stocking up on tourist kind of items for a while with a view to selling them suring that period. i trade at columbia road flower market in hackney, nightmare for parking but major tourist place. alot of people walk there from spital fields/brick lane. stones throw from olympic site, it is all relevant. thought should be made towards tourist attactions as all adds to the charm of london, what a joke. tourists may well turn up to an empty market. poor sods selling the plants, they especially have had to deal in a lack of trade due to the weather as people haven't been gardening, now they have to deal with this too :(
