To go to my doctors worried about weight?

Name-changed for this only because I don't want my paranoia worry associated with my regular username.

I've seen a few threads where people have said that sometimes we are in denial about weight-related matters and our perceptions have changed and it hit home a little. I have some home scales that claim to measure body fat but I know these are sometimes wildly inaccurate and I often get varying measurements so a friend advised me to go to a doctor to get my height/weight/body fat checked by them. DH thinks this is a huge waste of the drs time and I should just be happy as I am.

So I thought I'd ask here if people think it's an unreasonable thing to do?

Monkeyspiss I live in France. I'm not sure how this will help you know what equipment my dr has, I certainly don't know, but I apologise for missing that out of the OP, I know non-NHS is relevant and that was my mistake, but I would never have imagined exactly where I live was that important.

I'm going to look into whether the gym near me can offer this. It's not a place I'd have thought of myself, but now several of you have pointed it out it does make sense and I'm wondering why I hadn't!

It doesn't help me to know what equipment your GP has.

I wondered if you were under a system like in the US where they don't really have a GP system - but you see a Dr for a different specialism. In which case, maybe it wouldn't be a waste of the Dr's time, if you were seeing somebody who specialises in that area.

But since you've been rude and sarcastic I shall just offer you a great big Biscuit and really hope it doesn't make your body fat fluctuate by an irrelevant percentage.

bye now.

If you're a member of a gum they will do a detailed fat etc assessment for you. If you're not a member of one you could get a visitor pass for a day for a local gym.

On the basis your BMI is around 22 then I think you need to go to doctor to discuss why you are worried about your weight, and if you want to a gym to get body fat measured but at that BMI very unlikely to be carrying much excess fat unless you really have no muscle tone.

As your weight is comfortably inside the 'healthy' range for your height, going to the doctor is probably unnecessary, unless there's something you haven't mentioned here.

I know what you mean about feeling fat/flabby for your weight, but you may find that exercise helps with that, especially resistance/weight-bearing type exercise. So yes, go to your gym (and they will likely be able to do an assessment including measuring your body fat if you want).

Honestly it sounds like your weight is basically OK, but like many of us you're just a little out of shape - which is not a medical emergency :)

OP, I have no idea why you would want to go to a dr about your weight. You are in the middle of the normal BMI zone.

If you feel flabby get to the gym and do some resistance training. That will make a huge difference as to how your body looks whilst it remains the same weight.

BTW, I have a BMI the same as yours. I have felt chubby and flabby in that range when I am not working out and slim and toned when I am.

French drs are used to being part of a weigh- obsessed society so might take a different attitude to your concerns to an NHS GP. Here a gym would give you the body fat measurement and advice that you are looking for, but having lived in France I can imagine that this is something a dr there might advise on. That said, I still think it would be a complete and utter waste of time for you.

listen here op, I have a bmi of 24% - (normal, biscuit, stealth boast I hear everyone whispering)

But I am "lardy" - I can see lots of flab where it shouldnt be

BUT and this is very important indeed, just because my bmi is "fine" according to a chart does not mean that I am not unhealthily fat - because my bodyfat % is a whopping 34%.

What you need to do is forget bmi, which actually only compares weight and height, and buy some good properly calibrated body fat scales or some body fat callipers - because it is the FAT and not the WEIGHT which needs to carry a health warning ime
