To give up caffiene on Monday?

I feel lethargic all the time.

Have recently taken up running in the hope that it will help.

I drink a LOT of tea and coffee and think this may also be the problem.

Will I feel better if I give it up? Are the summer holidays a ridiculous time? I figured would be easier when not at work and out of 'routine' iyswim.

Don't go cold turkey if you drink a lot as you will get withdrawal.
Reduce by one caffinated drink a day
You will feel better in the long run, I did

Nancy66 · 14/07/2012 18:02

just ditch the coffee and stick with tea

Lambzig · 14/07/2012 18:02

You will feel better when you are off and sleep better, but the withdrawal can be difficult - you can get terrible headaches, but having a little bit of caffeine gets rid of them (eg a small cup of tea).

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 14/07/2012 18:03

If you go cold turkey, chances are you will get excrutiating headaches. YANBU to want to cut down / out. I should, I know.

But be prepared for the worst headaches this side of an espresso if you cut it out completely.

LisaD1 · 14/07/2012 18:06

Agree re the headaches, I gave up coffee a few months ago and have never had such bad headaches before, they were enough to make me want to curl up in a ball and do nothing! That said, they stopped within a few days but you must make sure you replace the fluids with something else, I forgot to do that so was also dehydrated, I now drink plenty of water instead.

thornrose · 14/07/2012 18:09

I gave up coffee about 8 weeks ago. I have to warn you, the withdrawal headaches were the most horrendous I've ever experienced.
I think on reflection cold turkey was a bad idea. Unfortunately I couldn't have coffee in the house as I have no self control whatsoever and would have given up at the first hurdle!
I'd go with reducing gradually. I sleep better but can't say I've noticed any other differences. I just think it's another toxin I can do without!

CookieRookie · 14/07/2012 18:09

The headaches are killer if you go cold turkey. I second the advice to cut down slowly.

toysoldiers · 14/07/2012 18:23

OK, no cold turkey.

How about cup of tea first thing, one mid afternoon?

Would that stave off the headaches?

Don't go cold turkey, caffeine withdrawal is horrendous.

I only have one coffee a day - but it's a large mug of filter, so probably counts as more - and if I don't have it, I have a killer headache by about noon.

No lethargy though, so not going to give it up.

thornrose · 14/07/2012 18:30

I believe decaf coffee has a little caffeine so maybe you could try that and then drop one coffee a day?
I switched to green tea and I have a good coffee as a treat now and again. I really don't miss drinking coffee on a daily basis.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2012 19:50

DH didn't have caffeine for four days when I was being induced and having DD. He was in agony with headaches and didn't realise what it was. Try hal-caff or tea. I wouldn't go cold turkey.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2012 19:50

That would be half-caff.

NoNoNoMYDoIt · 14/07/2012 19:54

Actually I would buck the trend and say 'go for it'. I gave up tea and coffee 3 weeks ago and had hellish headaches for 3 days and then it was all over. And I am a runner too. My main problem is that I would be falling asleep in the car for any drive longer than about 15 mins. For some reason dropping caffeine has stopped all that!
