To take a chamber pot with me when I go camping

I'm looking forward to going to a festival and have no problem with camping. Except that after two DCs my bladder is not what it should be and I always have to go at night. The thought of getting up in the cold and wet inthe middle of the night to do a wee is very unappealing. I could use the pot and dispose of the contents discreetly in a bush in the morning.
Any thoughts?

You know those brightly coloured rubber buckets they sell in supermarkets called trugs? damn useful for all sorts of things and v easy to sterilise with boiling water. but I must say, I like the fairy fabric conditioner bottle idea.

Brightspark1 · 13/07/2012 23:31

Book sounds great, will def buy it. Some really good ideas here but I am worried about my aim in anything smaller than a pot

Was going to suggest Lenor bottle also. Plus a she-wee.

Travel Johns worry me - do lumps of solid pee ever break down or are they a gift to our children's children's children?

I am a seasoned festival goer and keep a bucket in the tent to avoid the massive loo queues first thing in the morning. The morning after I v romantically met DH (Glastonbury '04), I weeed in my bucket and then puked in it. Then had to carry it very carefully to the portaloos to empty, being extra specially wary of any stray guy ropes that might want to trip me up

Sorry I am smiling at this and remembering a cramped campsite at an dig I was on about 5 years ago, being woken in the night by the sound of tinkling into a bucket.
At the time I remember being a bit Hmm but now after two children I'm investing in a shewee and will be getting up at about 6am to avoid the queues for the loos when we go next week.

Strangely the two children thing now means I'm so tired at night I sleep much better than I used to... swings and roundabouts eh.

Just looked at the she wees on amazon , I'm just not dure I'd catch it. I sound really pathetic don't I? I've had a TVT, which has cured my stress incontinence but I still suffer from urge incontinence. TMI?

Old ice cream litre tub does it for me and friends when doing the festivals. Put loo roll in the bottom (of the tub, not yours) this will deaden any noise.

Highly recommend the bucket and tent book. Laughed out loud whilst camping, v v funny.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 14/07/2012 00:31

We just take a bucket Grin - admittedly it's a very posh bucket, with a lid but it is still a bucket. I am way too old and past it and fat to be trogging across campsites in the middle of the night, at the mercy of bats and moths and lord knows what all else because I one of the DCs needs a wee again, for the fiftieth time since bedtime

whatthewhatthebleep · 14/07/2012 12:44

we use a small bucket with a flip top lid and a handle...I think it was meant for kitchen sink, veg scraps, etc for recycling...but it's our porta-potti when we go camping...it's served us well for a few years now...
wouldn't be without it...vital camping accessory!!

RubyGates · 14/07/2012 12:55

Large plastic jar with a screw on lid from the pound store. Nice wide top, no spiallge, easy to clean and no landfill.

ratspeaker · 14/07/2012 13:23

Another vote for the old ice cream tub method

or a tent with porch and no groundsheeet

I loved the tent the bucket and me, and the follow up I left my tent in San Francisco

LoveAndOtherIndoorSports · 14/07/2012 13:30

Bucket with lid. Line with bin-liner and a couple of disposable nappies. Sorted.

CadleCrap · 14/07/2012 13:47

I just pee at the back of the tent! Never thought of weeing in plastic container. That's what I thought everyone did!

Brightspark1 · 15/07/2012 20:40

Thanks for all your suggestions, I think the ice cream container is the way to go, cheap and cheerful.
Have ordered the tent the bucket and me from Amazon to read in between acts

Noooo, go for the travel johns they are fab ( although expensive at one per night)

Kahlua4me · 15/07/2012 20:50

We use a bucket as I love camping but there is no way I will leave the tent in the night to wee! I put it on a picnic blanket and towel just in case ...

Dc use it too and I take it to toilets in the morning.

pimmsgalore · 15/07/2012 20:57

make sure you take some disposable nappies, stick them in the bottom of the chamber pot and wee on them then bag them. You don't then run the risk of kicking the pot over in the night when sleepy drunk Grin

Brightspark1 · 16/07/2012 21:00

Rookie - that's the trouble, my bladder is so crap, I'd need more than one a night especially after too much beer lemonade, like the idea of nappies!

Shewee (with extension) and two-litre bottle with lid, or travel john.

Simples!

TheEnthusiasticTroll · 16/07/2012 21:19

just dont use an ice cream tub. I once overflowed it in the middle of the night Blush. Thde most embarassing thing was when my exps son got up in the morning and said, i heard you weeing in the night when you swore it sounded like you had overfilled the tub.

multipoodles · 16/07/2012 21:38

Largest size disposable nappy is all you need, honestly trust me on this one, they hold a full adult bladder! Spread on ground, wee on it and fold it up and dispose as you would a nappy. My best friend swears these work, we both have caravans, hers is a very old one without a loo and she uses a nappy during the night rather than trek across the campsite. Not as gross as you imagine, and no need to bother with carrying extra buckets etc with you :)

MyCarHasBrokenDownAgain · 16/07/2012 21:50

Just come back from a week camping in Kent, in the pissing (geddit!) rain. No way was I walking across a dog crap covered field in torrential rain at 3am for a widdle! I just used DSs old potett plus. Stand with legs akimbo, shove it under, have a wee, tie up bag, go back to bed! Cheap (as we had loads of bags leftover from DS) and simple, it also packs very flat so is ideal for camping. Grin

rookiemater · 16/07/2012 22:09

Travel John works for more than one nocturnal visit, I think the most was 3 times in one night and it was fine. Like the idea of a nappy though as much cheaper.
