about tv's in kids rooms

Socknickingpixie · 13/07/2012 22:28

im not someone who puts a tv on at every opertunity i have never let any of my kids watch to much of it and never let an under 10 have one in their own bedroom i dont see the need.

i got a text earlyer from my ex saying 'let me know when ds is in his own room so i can buy him a tv'

i replyed with 'ds is not even 5 months old thanks for the offer but im pretty sure he wont need one for years'

to then have phone ring and get yelled at stuff like 'if i want to get my ds a tv i will and you cant stop me no matter what age he is'

now i know he wont get him a tv he has no money at all hes a cocklodger at his latest gf's and shes skint as well.

but its kinda made me think, would you let a tiny have a tv in their room what age do you think is ok,and would you think it was ok for a nrp to attempt to push what the rp has in there own house (obviously what he does at his house is ok)
there is currently no contact at all no maintainance this is the first contact ive had since we parted company.

or am i just being totally ur about tv's

YANBU.

kinkyfuckery · 13/07/2012 22:30

You think at 5 months old you know what kind of parent you will be in 9 1/2 years? lololololol. Wait and see!

But no, I don't think a 5 month old needs a TV. Tell your ex he can buy one for his own house for when DS comes to stay. If he buys one, you don't have to use it.

I don't think the tv is the problem here

He has no right to insist what you have in your own home

YvonneMcGruder · 13/07/2012 22:30

YANBU, neither of mine have a TV in their room, and I'm not planning on getting one for them any time soon.
Nothing wrong with it if you do have one, I personally just don't see the point though. Smile

monkeyspiss · 13/07/2012 22:31

kinkyfucker - OP clearly has much older children, sounds like she has a fair idea of how she'd parent a 10 yr old

Kayano · 13/07/2012 22:33

I had a tv in my room at about 8.

I might let dd have one.

My niece had one at 3 which I thought was a bit early but it really helped her fall asleep so it turned out to be fantastic for them despite my initial thoughts

All kids are different

AgentZigzag · 13/07/2012 22:33

This isn't really about the TV though is it?

If you know he won't get one why didn't you just say 'Yeah, whatevs', your DS is only a few months old so it's not like it was a pressing matter in your lives.

And him even suggesting it when he's only a little baby and won't have one for years shows he's just doing it to needle you.

AgentZigzag · 13/07/2012 22:34

Grin at SS, really??

They're just so unimaginative these days.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 13/07/2012 22:34

I would be tempted seeing as he is so very insistent in having it and using it in my room.

WorraLiberty · 13/07/2012 22:34

All my kids have had TVs in their rooms

But I don't think that's the point of the thread really

JeezyPeeps · 13/07/2012 22:34

My son has a tv in his room - purely for his Xbox. My daughter doesn't have one. They are both well over 10. Neither actually want to watch tv in their rooms anyway - they'd rather be playing video games or on Facebook!

Inneedofbrandy · 13/07/2012 22:35

Mine are almost 5 and 6 and share a room. They have a Wii and dvd player connected to the telly but tbh its a waste and never gets turned on. Argh I wish they would entertain themselves with it instead they fight over cbbc or cbeebies in living room ffs

Only since Dm bought them Wii for christmas have they had a old flintstones tv though.

RubyFakeNails · 13/07/2012 22:39

All of mine have had tvs in their room from quite young, maybe 3 or 4.

This is more about whether he can make you do things or not.

CBChester · 13/07/2012 22:39

36 and never had a tv in my room DCs won't either will reconsider if/when they can buy their own

Socknickingpixie · 13/07/2012 22:42

kinky i have adult children as well as younger children and the baby

AgentZigzag · 13/07/2012 22:49

Is there more to it than just the TV then OP do you think?

Kennyp · 13/07/2012 22:54

Mine will have a tv in their rooms when they move out. They are primary school age at the moment.

suedpantsoffem · 13/07/2012 22:57

Dds 16 and 15. No TVs in rooms. Not ever, never. Dh and I don't have one either.
One tv in living room and that's it.

Socknickingpixie · 13/07/2012 23:11

agent im not really sure i think hes just very anti anybody trying to stop him doing anything he wants with his child no matter how strange the request.
perhaps he was just trying to wind me up,if so it didnt work.

i just wanted to get a range of thoughts on the subject just incase i was being hopelessly unreasonable about tv's

in all fairness baby wont be in own room till about 1 and at that age i expect a tv could make an ideal noisey toy when tipped over Grin and smashed

SoleSource · 13/07/2012 23:12

Sockinickingpixie Sorry for my accusation of calling you a troll upthread. I really could not believe this!

Keep refusing his offer of buying a tele vision, you know it makes sense. It is CRAZY!

Socknickingpixie · 13/07/2012 23:14

solesource thank you and no probs.

im glad it wasnt because you thought i was being trollish or oppressive about tv's Grin

AgentZigzag · 13/07/2012 23:15

Whatever you think about TVs in your own home is your own business Sock, nobody can say otherwise.

But this isn't something you'd need to consider for years anyway, and by that time there'll be some other gadget you'll be far more worried about than a crappy telly in their room.

He can't force you to take it in, unless he does a reverse burglary or something Grin

PhoneyM · 13/07/2012 23:22

Grin at reverse burglary
