I thought I found the perfect childminder for my son until I realised that she has 2 staffs at home. They were friendly but now I'm worried and confused. What would you do?

OP posts:

umm Barred, Plumpdog was being sarcastic. Basically saying that the pearl clutchers should have moved on to another breed to froth over by now.

PuppyMonkey · 16/07/2012 16:47

The paper I work for would print any dog attack story (and drop one of their boring council stories Wink).

HipHopOpotomus · 16/07/2012 16:47

I wouldn't, I just wouldn't!

D0oinMeCleanin · 16/07/2012 16:47

Akitas will be next in the firing line. They're top of the list for the numpties atm, Stafford's are loosing popularity with them now that they've learnt they're as soft as butter 99% of the time.

Rescues are starting to note that they now picking up more of the northern breeds, as they did 20 years ago with the bull terriers.

It's good for the staffy but it's going to be a nightmare for Akitas and their ilk.

FreudianSlipper · 16/07/2012 16:47

a dog bite is not news, it happens every day again because the sweetest well trained dog can turn

a child being attacked, face ripped to pieces or worse killed is news whatever the breed of dog

PlumpDogPillionaire · 16/07/2012 16:47

Oh, and Barred, if you see any factual errors in my posts, please point them out, I'm very interested.

BarredfromhavingStella · 16/07/2012 16:47

Sorry but that's not how I read it-perhaps you should be slightly more cautious with written sarcasm???

PlumpDogPillionaire · 16/07/2012 16:48

Yes, Freudian, it may well be 'news'. But that doesn't necessarily mean it will be accurately or responsibly reported.

PlumpDogPillionaire · 16/07/2012 16:49

Perhaps you should read more, Barred. Smile

BarredfromhavingStella · 16/07/2012 16:50

Perhaps you should practice sarcasm, you might even get better at it Wink

PlumpDogPillionaire · 16/07/2012 17:00

Oof, don't get me started, Barred (MN + PMT... - might NC to e.g. SarkyMalarkey - give me a couple of days...)

CatholicDad · 16/07/2012 21:16

"It's not the dog you should be worried about, it's the owner..." Hurray! Been at last twelve posts since this nonsense was last rolled out. Nice to see it again.

"Im saying that given media space to print 2 attack srtories, one from an SBT and one fromm a Retriever, then the paper would print the SBT one. Without a shadow of a doubt." Nonsense on stilts!

GingerWrath · 16/07/2012 21:21

Iam a Labrador owner. He is 7 months and loopy. I have had labs and Goldies previously.

I also have experience of Staffies.
They are daft..they are loving and they love kids, however, my DD will NEVER be unsupervised with ANY dog because they are animals!

boneyjonesy · 17/07/2012 13:00

"It's not the dog you should be worried about, it's the owner..."

'do many people get admitted to hospital with dog-owner bites then?'

Cheriefroufrou · 17/07/2012 13:21

"Im saying that given media space to print 2 attack srtories, one from an SBT and one fromm a Retriever, then the paper would print the SBT one. Without a shadow of a doubt."

the paper will print the one which did the most damage to the smallest/cutest kid
they would have no interest in the kinds of bites I've had from sheep dogs - barely a mark! Yes more frequent but much less damage, the ones that do the damage are the ones that get printed. Its not because it was a sheep dog, it was because the sheep dog didn't mangle my little face!

PlumpDogPillionaire · 17/07/2012 13:29

CatholicDad - where does your confidence in your 'knowledge' about this come from?
Are you a reporter? Do you work in A&E?
Please do explain...

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 18/07/2012 14:42

"Do many people get admitted to hospital with dog-owner bites then?" Seriously? Try me on a bad day and you just might!

And yes, while dogs are obviously animals and children should not be left alone with them unsupervised, I wholeheartedly believe that their environment and the way in which a dog is raised and trained has a huge impact on their behaviour and likelyness to bite.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/07/2012 16:44

My DD (now 10 yo) is terrified of dogs (no idea why).
We don't have a dog so she doesn't have access but if she's in close proximity to one, she sees them, not as a slavering demon, but a dog.
Trouble is when one walks by her or walks round a corner. She's completely caught out.

In retrospect ,if she'd been in a house with dogs, she might have got used to them or at least learn to tolerate.
Though I don't know if a CM would want their dog subjected to a child like my DD on a regular basis Hmm

candytuft63 · 18/07/2012 17:56

OP where are you -what have you decided ?

TezZep · 01/06/2015 14:28

Hello, I realise that this is a really REALLY old post but I wanted to know what the OP decided to do in the end as I am in exactly the same position and having a bit of a dilemma about it.
