to think it's time to eat crusts?

At eight years old DS still refuses to eat crusts on bread or toast. We thought out grow this awful habit when he was six or seven, but he's such a fussy eater that we haven't insisted yet. Are we being to lax or do all kids go through this phase?

DS2 did it for ages. He's ten now and he will usually eat crusts, occasionally he forgets he doesn't eat them. Grin

I just went with it TBH, there were other battles to be had. Smile

shrimponastick · 13/07/2012 13:11

12 yo DSS leaves his crusts.

Yet is hungry soon after.....

Always seems more trouble than it would be worth to nibble around them tbh.

KateShmate · 13/07/2012 13:13

I still don't eat my crusts! Grin

Viviennemary · 13/07/2012 13:15

Can't see it's worth making a thing over. The only thing that might mildly irritate me would be clearing up bits of crusts. Tell him to put them in the bin himself.

BonkeyMollocks · 13/07/2012 13:16

I love the crust so it works out well here.

I cut them off for ds and munch away! Grin

WowOoo · 13/07/2012 13:18

My ds1 eats mine. He's like a hoover.

I would imagine when he gets in to nice seeded bread where the crusts have extra he'll get into the idea.

WorraLiberty · 13/07/2012 13:18

Perhaps he doesn't want curly hair....

RichTeas · 13/07/2012 13:19

Yes we always go with more trouble than it's worth thinking. It just seems such a shame to throw away so much bread needlessly, especially as once you get used to crusts they are enjoyable. KateShmate: start eating your crusts please!!

Is it really worth making a fuss over? This is something that would definitely fall into my CBFA category.

marge2 · 13/07/2012 13:23

Ds1 who is 9 won't eat them, but eats pretty much everything else under the sun happily , so I don't make him, in fact I cut them off really close to the edge, so he eats almost the whole bit of bread. If I leave them on he stops about an inch away from them, and is then hungry really quickly again.

Ds2 who is a picky little bugger eats crusts happily.

you win some, you lose some.

I now give them those part baked rolls / baguettes in their lunch boxes, and they both leave none at all.

KeepYerTitsIn · 13/07/2012 13:24

Awful habit? Are you serious OP? What on earth does it matter if he doesn't eat his crusts?

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2012 13:26

Marge we do that too. Rolls for lunch-no crust to worry about. Smile

RichTeas · 13/07/2012 13:28

Well it is awful manners and it is an awful waste. It matters because it shows a disregard to all those starving children who are desperate for a piece of bread. I know one child's habits are not going to change the world, it's more a case of principle. If you have any.

Feed them to the birds?

CharltonHairstyle · 13/07/2012 13:30

I don't always eat crusts and I'm the least fussy eater EVER!

They're just a bit, well, dry.

WorraLiberty · 13/07/2012 13:31

Oh come on that's a bit OTT

The ducks will be grateful for them anyway Wink

ChippyMinton · 13/07/2012 13:31

Will he eat a bakery crusty loaf with a well-baked crust? Or tiger bread? Or french stick?

Sliced-bread crusts aren't worthy of the name and are a bit . DD isn't keen but I refuse to cut them off so she nibbles up to the crust if she can be bothered.

CharltonHairstyle · 13/07/2012 13:33

Oooh - Tiger bread crusts are lovely Smile

PassTheTwiglets · 13/07/2012 13:33

Blitz them in the processor and stash breadcrumbs in freezer for future use.

TheOneWithTheHair · 13/07/2012 13:35

Don't make a fuss about it but perhaps emphasise what he's missing. Just subtle enjoyment from you when you eat them. He'll get curious soon enough.

BonkeyMollocks · 13/07/2012 13:36

Why is it wasteful?

Make breadcrumbs, feed the ducks, eat them yourself....the possibilities are endless!

NoComet · 13/07/2012 13:37

DD2 (11) doesn't eat hers, the birds love her.
I lose all food related battles with her, so I don't bother.

She gets better as she gets older, just Very, very, very, very slowly.

KeepYerTitsIn · 13/07/2012 13:40

Erm ..... I have no principles because I cut DS's crusts off? I take it you have your judgey pants well and truly hoiked on a permanent basis. Find something important to worry about. There must be something meaningful, surely, for someone with principles such as yours.

Interviewterror · 13/07/2012 13:40

ds(8) occasionally eats bread crusts, hope it will get betting with time.

he's only recently started eating crusts on pizza.

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2012 13:42

DS2 doesn't eat cheese at all but will happily eat a pizza. Now that is infuriating.
